Epidermal Changes of the Adhesive Disks During Wall Attachment in Parthenocissus tricuspidata (착생에 따른 담쟁이덩굴 흡착근 표피조직의 변화)

  • The present study examined the epidermal changes of adhesive disks which occur during attachment in Parthenocissus tricuspidata using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Several adhesive disks, each covered with a bract, develop from the shoot apical meristem during early development. In the initial stage, the adhesive disks are club-shaped and their upper and lower epidermis are indistinguishable. However, in the actively growing stage, they become spherical and both epidermis are clearly differentiated into the adventitious roots. Prior to wall attachment, the adhesive disks exhibit adaxial convex and abaxial concave shapes, and electron-dense substances are abundant in the vacuoles of epidermal cells. The peripheral area of the adhesive disk is adhered first to the wall surface, while the central area is drawn inward in a vacuum-like state during attachment. As the attachment progresses and the electron-dense substances continue to discharge, the upper and lower epidermis rapidly undergo deterioration and the disks shrink considerably. At this stage, structural changes of the lower epidermis occur much faster than in the upper one. The discharged substance is accumulated on the wall surface, and this aids the attachment of adhesive disks on the wall for long periods. In this manner, the shape and structure of the adhesive disk epidermis change drastically from initial growth to the mature stage. Further, the role of electron-dense substance and shrinkage of the disk during attachment has been discussed in Parthenocissus tricuspidata.

  • Background: An accurate diagnosis of the severity of the rejection after a heart transplantation relies on endomyo-cardial biopsy, but because of its invasiveness and the need for repeated examination makes it is an inappropriate monitoring method. Therefore, we have tried to find a monitoring method that is continuous and less invasive. Material and Method: Heterotopic heart transplantation using Ono-Lindsey Method was done in 20 rats, and then $^{99m}$ Tc-Pyrophosphate (PYP) scan was done after a month, Uptake ratio of transplanted heart to vertebrae (H/V) was obtained to be compared with the biopsy result. Result: Rejection was defined when the H/V uptake ratio was higher than 0.09, and we compared the uptake ratio with the results of biopsy. The result was true positives was 3, true negatives 12, false negatives 2, andfalse positives 3. Therefore sensitivity was 60% and specificity was 80%, diagnostic value was 75%. Conclusion: $^{99m}$Tc-Pyrophosphate (PYP) scan was a useful method for the evaluation of the heart transplantation rejection and it will be helpful for monitoring rejection as an non-invasive and simple method.hod.

  • Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) method is an economical method that does not require any other methods to be operated once it is installed as it controls of groundwater flow in the barrier, which is inserted a reactive material on the way of pollutant. The major dominant element of PRB is a reactive material in the reactive wall, and such factors as purification efficiency and used time based on the chemical and physical features in between the reactant and pollutant. High purification efficiency can be expected when a rational design that is synthetically considered in features of packing density, operation period, and adsorption reactant of pollutant. A column test was conducted for an application test using CFW as its adsorption reactant in order to remove copper($Cu^{2+}$) in the PRB system. The CFW was used for the reactant and selected inflow speed, density and thickness of PRB as its necessary factors for design of PRB. As a result of the experiment, the removal efficiency decreased as operating time of PRB increased and the efficiency linearly increased upon the length. Therefore, it is confirmed that the thickness of reactive materials in PRB system can be designed using the proposed formula considering purification time and density of CFW.

Effects of Nitrogen Fertilization and Clipping Interval on Mineral and Water-soluble Carbohydrate Contents in Korean Lawngrass (Zoysia japonica steud) (질소시용과 예초간격이 한국잔디(Zoysia japonica Steud.)의 주요영양성분 및 가용성 탄수화물함량에 미치는 영향)

  • 질소비료 3수준(0,350,700kg N-ha-1year-1) 및 예초간격 3수준( 10,20,30일 간격)하에서 이 요인들이 식물체 각부위(엽, 엽초를 포함한 차, 포복경 및 근)내, N,P,k,Ca,Mg 및 가용성 탄수화물함량에 여하히 영행을 미치는가게 대해서 1983년 6월부터 10일 까지 대전 배재대학실험포장에서 조성한지 3년 지난 한국잔디를 대상으로 실험하였던 바 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 질소 증시한 결과 식물체 각부위내 N함량은 증가하였다. 특히 N성분은 엽부위에 다량으로 집적 되어 있어 저장양분으로서의 역할을 하지못하는 것으로 사료되었다. 2. 질소비료에 대한 P성분의 반응은 식물체부위에 따라 변화가 심하게 나타났는데 엽부위로서는 P함량이 감소한 반면, 경 및 포복경에서는 예초간격이 30일에서 10일로 단축되었을 때 한하여 증가하는 양상 을 보였다. 3. K 함량은 질소를 증랭시용할때 엽과 경부위에 특히 많이 축적되었으며 근부위에서는 질소시용이 오히려 K함량을 감소시키는 요인으로 작용하였다. 그러나 N과 K함량간에는 지상부위와 포복경에서 정의 상관관계가 인정되었다. 4. Ca 함량은 엽과 경부위에서 예초간격을 짧게 하였을때 질소시용에 따른 부의 반응을 보였다.5. Mg 함량은 질소나 예초간격에 거의 영향을 받지 않았다. 6. 가용성 탄수화물함량은 질소시용량이 증가함에 따라 비례적으로 감소하였다. 그러나 예초간격의 영향은 경부위를 제외한 각부위에서 나타나지 않았다. 7. 영양성분에 대한 예초간격의 효과는 질소만큼 크지 않았으나 질소시용과 함께 나타난 유의적 변화는 부위별로 각각 다르게 표현되었다. 즉 N함량은 예초간격을 단축하였을 때 엽 및 경부위에서만 증가되었고 Ca 함량은 30일간격으로 연장할때만 증가되는 경향이었다. 한편 K 및 Mg함량은 예초간격에 의해 영향을 받지 않거나 변동이 심한 상황으로 나타났다.

Effects of insulin and exercise on glucose uptake of skeletal muscle in diabetic rats (당뇨병 흰쥐에서 운동부하가 시험관 실험에서 골격근의 당섭취에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of insulin and exercise on glucose uptake of skeletal muscle were investigated in soleus muscle isolated from low dose streptozotocin induced diabetic rats in vitro. Glucose uptake was assessed by measuring $^3H$-methylglucose uptake in vitro. Basal glucose uptake in diabetes was reduced by approximately one-third of the control value($5.6{\pm}0.73{\mu}Mol$/g/20min. in diabetes versus $8.4{\pm}0.77$ in control, P<0.01). There was also a significant decrease(P<0.01) in glucose uptake of diabetes at physiologic insulin concentration ($200{\mu}IU$/ml) by 40% ($6.1{\pm}1.20$ versus $10.0{\pm}0.81$). Furthermore, maximal insulin($20000{\mu}IU$/ml)-stimulated glucose uptake was 36% lower in diabetes as compared with control($7.3{\pm}1.29$ versus $11.4{\pm}1.29$, P<0.01). In contrast, exercise(1.0km/hr, treadmill running for 45min.) effect on glucose uptake was so dramatic in diabetes that glucose uptake at basal state was 8.4+1.09 and insulin stimulated-glucose uptake were $10.2{\pm}1.47$ and $11.9{\pm}1.64$, in 200 and $20000{\mu}IU$/ml added insulin, respectively. These results suggest that insulin insensitivity develops in skeletal muscle after 2 weeks of streptozotocin-induced diabetes, but these insensitivity was recovered significantly by single session of running exercise.

  • Bartter's syndrome is a rare tubular disorder characterized by hypokalemic, hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis, hyperreninemic, hyperaldosteronism, hyporesponsiveness to pressor agents and juxtaglomerular apparatus hyperplasia. We report a case of Bartter's syndrome of a 5 month-old male infant with subdural hematoma who was confirmed by characteristic clinical, laboratory findings and kidney biopsy. In addition to a case report, brief review of related lituratures was done.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hydraulic backwash load and porous ceramic media on the biological nitrogen removal efficiencies of a biological aerated filter. An upflow anoxic-oxic biological aerated filter(AO-BAF) with porous ceramic media can remove nitrogen by nitrification and denitrification in single unit. After the AO-BAF backwash, nitrogen removal efficiency was lowest and gradually increased to the steady state. Nitrification efficiency, however, showed the opposite result. It is likely that the biofilms are exposed to aerobic condition as the excess biofilms were sloughed off by backwashing

  • 본 논문에서는 일양한 예혼합 기류중에 놓여진 원주 후류의 고온 순환류에 의 해 보지되는 난류 예혼합 화염을 대상으로 해서 유동의 가시화 및 온도와 이온전류의 변동의 측정에 의해서 화염의 구조를 조사한 결과, 원주 보염기 후류의 재순환 영역부 근에 형성된 전단층에 있어서는 코히렌트(Coherent)구조의 화염이 되고 하류부에서는 불규칙한 3차원 와(渦)에 지배되는 전파성 화염이 형성 되었다. 온도변동에 대한 쌍 봉성의 확율밀도분포와 이온전류변동에 대한 3개의 피이크의 확율밀도분포는 엷은 반 응면을 사이에 두고 미연혼합기괴와 기연가스괴가 서로 접하는 주름 상층류화염 또는 층류화염편의 구조에 대응하며, 코히렌트 와(渦)에 지배되는 화염에 있어서는 거시적 혼합은 코히렌트 와의 거동에 지배되나 그 구조는 주름상층류 화염과 일부 강한 전단 력을 받는 부분에는 분산 반응영역의 구조임이 밝혀졌다.

  • Prostaglandin은 인체의 여러 조직에서 생성되어 체내에 널리 분포되어 있지만 그 함유량은 극히 적다. 또한 대사산물의 반감기가 매우 이에 대한 연구결과를 알기 위하여는 조직 또는 체액을 추출하여 세심한 주의가 필요하고 측정방법에 있어서 정밀성이 요구된다. 또 여러가지 대사산물과 전구물질을 분리할 수 있는 방법이 요구된다. Prostaglandin가 생성되고 대사되는 과정이 매우 복잡하기 때문에 보다 정확하게 여러가지 대사산물을 분리할 수 있는 방법이 요구된다. 한편, prostaglandin은 전신의 거의 모든 조직에 분포하며 그 이용도 다양하다. 뿐만 아니라, prostaglandin이 임상적으로 생체기능의 조절(고혈압, 신기능조절, 난소와 자궁의 생리 등) 및 prostaglandin analogue의 길항약물 및 생합성 억제약물로서도 중요한 의미를 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 관점에서 prostaglandin을 측정하는데 있어서: 1. 조직의 추출과 조작에 대한 일반적 방법 2. 생체조직에서 eicosanoid의 추출 방법 3. Prostaglandin, thromboxane 및 leukotriene에 대하여 평활근을 이용한 생물학적 검정 4. Eicosanoids의 방사면역학적 검정 5. 효소면역 검정법 6. Cyclooxygenase의 측정, 정체 및 특성 7. Lipoxygenase의 특성과 측정 8. 지질과산화 반응의 측정 등을 다루었다.

  • Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering on non-alkali glass and single crystal MgO (100) substrate at substrate temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. Micro structures of $TiO_2$ films were investigated by XRD, FE-SEM, and Pole figure measurements. $TiO_2$ films deposited on glass substrate showed preferred orientation of anatase (101), whereas $TiO_2$ films deposited on the MgO single crystal substrate showed hetero-epitaxial anatase (100). $TiO_2$ film grown on MgO substrate showed higher photoctalytic activity than that of glass substrate.
