  • We were selected oriental medicinal herbs known to be effective in strengthening muscles, improving sarcopenia, treating arthritis and osteoporosis. Amino acids have been reported to be associated with the above-mentioned effects. During the manufacturing process of water extracts of ginseng and samchae, the content of arginine, a basic amino acid, was significantly reduced. The decrease was 99.48mg/100ml for steamed red ginseng compared to 114.07mg/100ml for dried white ginseng, and 54.69mg/100ml for steamed samchae compared to 118.90mg/100ml for dried samchae. The extracts of the wild roots of Acanthus apias and the above-ground twigs of Acanthus apias showed significantly higher DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. Meanwhile, DPPH activity was higher in steamed red ginseng and steamed samchae compared to dried white ginseng and dried samche, but ABTS activity increased to 66.88% for steamed red ginseng compared to 41.96% for dried white ginseng, but was 77.48% for dried samchae and 77.52% for steamed samchae.

  • The effects of dietary supplementation of JR-22, formula containing distilled extracts of traditional herbs on maximal exercise performance and endurance were evaluated in mouse and rat model. In acute forced swimming test with 4%∼8% of the body weight attached to the tail, it was shown that dietary JR-22 supplementation increased endurance in exercise performance. There was no change of blood lactic acid, ammonia, inorganic phosphorous ion and creatine kinase activity, however ATP concentration in muscle was increased by JR-22 supplementation. Also, insulin-like growth factor-l (IGF-1) concentration in blood was significantly increased by JR-22 supplementation. In addition, the oxidative damage induced by exercise was reduced by JR-22 supplementation. In these results, we suggested that JR-22 supplementation enhanced maximal endurance exercise performance by the mechanism of increasing ATP and IGF-1 concentration and reducing oxidative damage.

  • Due to economic development and advancement of medical science, an aging society where the proportion of the elderly population increases is coming. Korea's aging speed is growing rapidly compared to that of other developed countries. The physical and mental abilities of elderly people with aging are getting worse more and more. They want a kind of auxiliary system in order to mitigate and prevent their weakness. The supplementary system can greatly contribute to improving the quality of life for elderly people. In particular, some devices that include muscle strengthening and cognitive and balance ability enhancement are useful for the most older people. In this paper, we introduce a development of human care contents based rehabilitation equipment to enhance these functions, and present its usability evaluation. The evaluation is conducted for rehabilitation specialists as well as expected users and their results are analyzed.

  • This study aimed to verify the effects of a 4-week program of ankle-strengthening exercise and toe-taping walk exercise on the basic lower body strength and walking to examine the benefits of the two exercises. The subjects involved 30 women in their 20s enrolled in university A. The subjects were equally divided into three groups - ankle-strengthening exercise group, toe-taping walk exercise group, and control group. The subjects were instructed to massage and do ankle-strengthening exercises using a towel, massage ball, and CRT, for 60 minutes, 3 times a week. They also taped their hallux valgus using a kinesiology tape and walked for 20 minutes with white tape applied. To sum up, the 4-week ankle-strengthening exercise and toe-taping walk exercise were identified to have a partial statistical significance on the basic lower body strength (muscular strength, power, and balance) and walking (length of gait line, plantar pressure, and COP) of women in their 20s. Therefore, the study confirmed the effects of ankle-strengthening exercises and toe-taping walk exercise on the lower body exercise function, and it is considered that further studies should be conducted on more various effects of the exercises by subdividing them into different pain locations and orthomechanic findings.
