  • The longitudinal reinforcement ratio for the performance-based design of columns was studied. Unlike the existing design codes using uniform minimum reinforcement ratio and effective stiffness for all columns, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio of columns was defined as the function of various design parameters. To evaluate the minimum reinforcement ratio, two conditions were considered: 1) prevention of passive yielding of compression re-bars due to the creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained service loads; and 2) ultimate flexural strength greater than the cracking moment capacity to maintain the ductility of columns for earthquake design. In addition, the effective flexural stiffness of columns for structural analysis was determined according to the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The design method addressing the three criteria was proposed. The proposed method was applied to a design example.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) usually exhibits inherent brittleness under tensile stress. Application of FRP tendons to concrete beam leads to undesirable flexural behavior due to limited ductility compared to prestressed concrete beam with steel tendons. It has been experimentally observed that partial improvement of flexural behavior can be achieved by releasing FRP tendons' strain by unbonding FRP tendons. In order to estimate and apply the degree of improvement to the design, reasonable yet practical model predicting flexural strength as well as overall flexural behavior of unbonded FRP prestressed concrete beam is needed. In this study, an elaborated model in describing curvature distributions and flexural strength at ultimate stage of unbonded FRP tendons is described. There have been close agreements on the flexural strength of the FRP prestressed concrete beam between the predictions by nonlinear computer program and by the model.

  • The structures that use the bridge plates are considered to have advantages such as short work term, excellent economical efficiency and low maintenance cost. Bridge plates are being widely used for water ducts and eco-corridors as replacements of reinforced concrete ducts. Bridge plates are deep and have greater pitch as compare to conventionally deep corrugated steel plate. They are expected to be increasingly used in the future. The structures that use bridge plates have two forms, such as arch type and box type. The arch type structures are designed based on the compressive strength, and the box type structures, based on the moment in the plate member. In this study, the ultimate strength and moment strength of the connection part of the specimens were examined by their thickness. Static and bending tests used to evaluate the performance of bridge plate. Finally, These results were used in the design process.

  • The polymer concrete is drawing a strong interest as high-performance materials in the construction industry. Resins using recycled PET offer the possibility of a lower source cost of materials for making useful polymer concrete products. Also the recycling of PET in polymer concrete would help solve some of the solid waste problems posed by plastics and save energy. Polymer concrete beams using unsaturated polyester resins based on recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste were used in our study for grasping its structural behavior of static and fatigue. As a result of static test, Compression stress distribution of Polymer concrete indicates linear behavior such as triangles. Although polymer concrete is high strength materials, its ductility capacity is excellent. From the fatigue test results, There was almost no difference on flexural characteristics between before and after fatigue loading. Therefore, recycled PET polymer concrete remains excellent structural ability after fatigue loading.

  • The ultimate strengths of reinforced concrete deep beams are governed by the capacity of the shear resistance mechanism composed of concrete and shear reinforcing bars, and the structural behaviors of the beams are mainly controlled by the mechanical relationships according to the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, load and support conditions, and material properties. In this study, a simple indeterminate strut-tie model reflecting all characteristics of the ultimate strengths and complicated structural behaviors is presented for the design of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams. In addition, a load distribution ratio, defined as a magnitude of load transferred by a vertical truss mechanism, is proposed to help structural designers perform the design of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. In the determination of a load distribution ratio, a concept of balanced shear reinforcement ratio requiring a simultaneous failure of inclined concrete strut and vertical steel tie is introduced to ensure the ductile shear failure of reinforced concrete deep beams, and the prime design variables including the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength of concrete influencing the ultimate strength and behavior are reflected upon based on various and numerous numerical analysis results. In the companion paper, the validity of presented model and load distribution ratio was examined by employing them to the evaluation of the ultimate strengths of various simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams tested to failure.

  • Concrete structures can cause various problems as the number of common years increases when exposed to external extreme climate conditions. Among these problems, freezing and thawing occur due to the action of extreme climate factors such as heavy rain and heavy snow, which have become the most problematic in recent years. In this study, we present a rapid freezing and thawing test method of concrete in the air, referring to KS F 2456, as Seoul exhibits very dry weather during the period of freezing and thawing. Concrete test specimens and RC beams were fabricated to perform rapid freezing and thawing of 0, 100, 200, and 300 cycles, and the performance evaluation confirmed the degradation of each subject in material and member units. The design strength of 24 MPa, which performs rapid freezing and thawing in the air up to 300 cycles, decreases by 5.24 MPa (21%), and as rapid freezing and thawing in the air increases the stress burden on reinforced concrete bending members, reducing the energy absorption (dissipation) ability of structures due to earthquakes.

  • In order to develop SFRC TBM tunnel segment, evaluating the SFRC mixture was conducted through flexural tests of SFRC beams without ordinary steel reinforcement in this study. Considered variables were compressive strengths of SFRC, aspect and mix ratio of steel fibers and total 16 specimens were fabricated and tested until failure. The load-vertical displacement results demonstrates that the effect of aspect ratio is minor when compared to results form small beam test(Moon et al, 2013). A SFRC beam resists the vertical load until the width of crack reaches to 7 mm due to steel fibers across cracked surfaces. Moreover, it is found that flexural moment estimated by equation of TR No. 63(Concrete Society, 2011) is useful for prediction of nominal strength for SFRC structure. From the investigation of fiber distribution in cracked section, it is found that dispersion improved in actual size beam compared to in standard small beam for evaluation of flexural strength.

  • With bending moment, torsional moment due to geometric properties as "Initial curvature" acts in horizontally curved I-girder. These behavior causes the secondary effect of bending in minor-axis because of interaction between bending and torsion. The bending and torsion interaction cause a loss of load bearing capacity by induced the early inelastic or plasticity condition in curved girder. Also eccentric load by movements of traffic can increase torsion. However, Equation of interaction between bending and torsion for straight girder, not deal with characteristics of curved girder behavior in previous studies, can be overestimated for ultimate strength in horizontally curved I-girder acting vertical force. Therefore, using more rational, obvious suggestion is required when design curved girder. In this study, we identified the bending-torsional moment interaction for the horizontally curved I-girder of the eccentric load acting by FEM analysis.

  • According to Korea Highway Bridge Design Code the bridge deck is designed by the strength design method and is regarded as a beam possessing the unit width based on the bending theory. By many researches it is revealed that the existing bridge deck is failed by punching shear. For evaluating the ultimate capacity of bridge deck it is important to estimate the behavior of bridge deck under the punching shear. For the punching strength it is difficult that the existing research results are applied to the simplified composite deck. In this study for comparing characteristics on punching shear the punching shear tests on simplified composite deck and RC deck are performed. The punching shear strength of simplified composite deck is compared with several bridge design codes.
