  • In this study, nonlinear analysis of steel plane frame was performed using the refined plastic hinge method of advanced analysis techniques. In deterioration of stiffness in plastic zone, influences by flexural bending, residual stress, geometrical non-linearity, and semi-rigid connection are considered. And also, further reduced tangent modulus was used for geometrical non-linearity, top and seat angle were chosen for semi-rigid connection. Furthermore, 3 parameter power model was used for moment-rotation behaviour of beam to column connection. The loading conditions are combined with axial and lateral force and the inverse triangle distribution of lateral and eight type of analytical models were used in analysis. The results of analyses were compared with semi-rigid and rigid connection on behaviour of numerical analysis models. And also, the behaviors of frame with changes of semi-rigidity were analyzed by using the results obtained from MIIDAS-GENw.

  • The bearing capacity of the sand foundation including a thin dense sand layer depends on the stiffiness, thickness and the location of the dense sand layer. In this paper was the influence of the dense sand layer on both the bearing capacity and the failure configuration is studied by means of K.E.M(Kinematic Element Method). K.E.M was implemented to get the excat solution starting from the upper bound of the analysis. The result show that the bearing capacity of the foundation and the failure configuration is greatly influenced by the dense sand layer, when the layer is located not deeper than 3/5 of the foundation width.

  • Recently, researches about fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) which has excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength as a substitution material to steel tendon have been actively pursued. This study is performed to examine FRP tendon used prestressed beam's safety under service load. The specimen was a prestressed concrete beam with internal bonded FRP tendon. In order to compare the member fatigue capacity, a control specimen of a prestressed concrete beam with ordinary steel tendon was tested. A fatigue load was applied at a load range of 60%, 70%, and 80% of the 40% ultimate load, which was obtained though a static test. The fatigue load was applied as a 1~3 Hz sine wave with 4 point loading setup. Fatigue load with maximum 1 million cycles was applied. The specimen applied with a load ranging between 40~60% did not show a fatigue failure until 1 million cycles. However, it was found that horizontal cracks in the direction of tendons were found and bond force between the tendon and concrete was degraded as the load cycles increased. This fatigue study showed that the prestressed concrete beam using FRP tendon was safe under a fatigue load within a service load range. Fatigue strength of the specimen with FRP and steel tendon after 1 million cycles was 69.2% and 59.8% of the prestressed concrete beam's static strength, respectively.

  • In the construction site, various earth retaining systems are developed and applied to maintain stability of excavated area and structures. Among the methods, the underground continuous wall and the column-type diaphragm wall methods are especially used in construction site nearby buildings or roads. However, these methods have some disadvantages such as the difficulty of quality control and long curing time because these methods need to cast fresh concrete at the construction site. In addition, these methods are usually applied to the site for the temporary purpose. In this paper, we suggest precast hollow prestressed concrete pile for continuous pile wall system. To investigate the structural behavior of suggested pile, which is the main member of the suggested system, tests pertaining to the structural behavior and prestressing force applied in the pile are conducted. From the test results, it was found that the prestressing force measured is sufficient compared with the value obtained by the design equation and the cracking moment measured is 34% higher than the design value. In addition to the above, this precast hollow prestressed concrete pile has an additional safety margin that the maximum moment is 59.2% higher than the cracking moment which is one of the serviceability limits for the design of the system.

  • This Paper applied a simple strength parameter averaging method to double layered systems consisting of the strong sand layer overlying the soft clay deposit. This study derived a formula which defines a critical depth as the strength parameters, and used the correction parameter, $\alpha$ to reduce an error of the strength parameter averaging method. The results of the method were presented in the form of dimensionless charts and were compared with the results of several solutions proposed by Satyanarayana & Grag, Sreenivasulu, and Meyerhof & Hanna. The results of the proposed method coincided with the method of Meyerhof & Hanna and the results obtained from FLAC. But the Satyanarayana & Grag method and the Sreenivasulu method overestimated the bearing capacity. Consequently, the bearing capacity of foundation on sand layer overlying soft clay layer can be approximately estimated by using the proposed dimensionless charts.

  • This study investigates the existing theoretical backgrounds in order to examine the behavior of lateral flow according to the plasticity of soils when unsymmetrical surcharge is worked on polluted soft soils by comparing and analyzing the results measured through model tests. Model tests are canied out as follows soil tank, bearing frame and bearing plate are made. By increasing unsymmetrical surcharge to the ground soils with the consistent water content and with gradually increased polluted materials at intervals, the amounts of settlement, lateral displacement and upheaval were respectively observed. In conclusion, the value of critical surcharge was expressed as q$_{cr}$=2.78$_{cu}$ which was similar to those Tschebotarioff(q$_{cr}$=3.0$_{cu}$) and Meyerhof(q$_{cr}$=(B/2H+$\pi$/2)$_{cu}$) had been proposed. The value of ultimate capacity was expressed as q$_{ult}$=4.84$_{cu}$ which was similar to that of Prandtl. The lateral flow pressure is adeQuately calculated by the eQuation(P$_{max}$=K$_o$ r H) and the maximum value of lateral flow pressure is found near O.3H of layer thickness(H) and is higher to ground surface than the ones in composition pattern, Poulos distribution pattern and softclay soils (CL, CH) which is not polluted. The stability control method used in this research followed the management diagram of Tominaga.Hashimoto, Shibata.Sekiguchi, Matsuo.Kawamura who use the amounts of plasticity displacement by lateral flow. As a result, the ultimate capacity values in the diagram {S$_v$-(Y$_m$/S$_v$)} of Matsuo.Kawamura and in the diagram {(q/Y$_m$)-q} of Shibata. Sekiguchi were smaller than in the ones of load-settlement curve (q-S$_v$).

  • In this study, a customiz ed bridge system was developed for North Korea application. For the application of North Korea, the customized bridge system design, fabrication, and construction performance evaluation were performed using ultra-high performance concrete a compressive strength 120MPa or more and a direct tensile strength 7MPa or more. The comparison of the North Korean truck luggage load(30, 40, 55) and the Korean standard KL-510 load showed that cross-section increased as the load increased. Furthermore, a bridge with a span length of 30m was fabricated with ultra-high performance concrete for the construction performance evaluation. The evaluation of the load condition analysis was performed by a flexural test. The results showed that a bridge with a span length of 30m secured about 167% of sectional performance under initial cracking load conditions and about 134% of load bearing capacity under ultimate load conditions. As a result of economic analysis, the customized bridge system using ultra-high-performance concrete was less than about 11% of the upper construction cost compared to the steel composite girder bridge. Therefore, these results suggest that the price competitiveness can be secured when applying the ultra-high-performance concrete long-span bridge developed through this study.

  • A direct shear member resists external forces through the shear transfer of reinforcing bars placed at the concrete interface. The current concrete structural design code uses empirical formulas based on the shear friction analogy, which is applied to the horizontal shear of concrete composite beams. However, in the case of a member with a large amount of reinforcing bars, the shear strength obtained through the empirical formula is lower than the measured value. In this paper, the limit state of newly constructed composite beams on an existing concrete girder is defined using stress field theory, and material constitutive laws are applied to gain horizontal shear strength while considering the tension-stiffening and softening effects of concrete struts. A simplified method of calculating the shear strength is proposed, which was validated by comparing it with the related design code provisions. As a result, it was confirmed that the method generally shows a similar tendency to the experimental results when the shear reinforcing bar yields, unlike the regulations of the design code, where differences in the predicted value of shear strength occur according to the shear reinforcement ratio.

  • Laboratory dynamic tests are carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of saturated sands in most countries. However, simple results such as the maximum cyclic shear stress and the number of cycles at initial liquefaction are used in the experimental assessment of liquefaction potential, even though various results can be obtained from the dynamic test. In addition, it seemed to be inefficient because more than three dynamic tests with different stress ratio have to be carried out to draw a liquefaction resistance experimental curve. To improve the present assessment method fur liquefaction potential, a new critical resistible characteristic far soil liquefaction is proposed and verified through conventional cyclic triaxial tests with Jumunjin sand. In the proposed method, various experimental data such as effective stress path, stress-strain relationship, and the change of excess pore water pressure can be used in the determination of cumulative plastic shear strains at every 1/4 cycle. Especially, the critical cumulative plastic shear strain to initiate liquefaction can be defined in a specific point called a phase change point in the effective stress path and it can be calculated from a hysteric curve of stress-strain relationship up to this point. Through this research, it is found that the proposed cumulative plastic shear strain can express the dissipated energy to resist dynamic loads and consider the realistic soil dynamic behavior of saturated sands reasonably. It is also found that the critical plastic shear strain can be used as a registible index of soils to represent the critical soil dynamic state, because it seems to include no effect of large deformation.

  • The conventional performance-based design method for the solid-wall caisson breakwater has been extended and applied to the perforated-wall caisson. The mathematical model to calculate the sliding distance of a perforated-wall caisson is verified against hydraulic experimental data. The developed performance-based design method is then compared with the conventional deterministic method in different water depths. Both the expected sliding distance and the exceedance percentage of total sliding distance during the structure lifetime decrease with decreasing water depth outside the surf zone, but they increase with decreasing water depth inside the surf zone. The performance-based design method is either more economical or less economical than the deterministic method depending on which design criterion is used. If the criterion for the ultimate limit state is used, the former method is less economical than the latter outside the surf zone, whereas the two methods are equally economical inside the surf zone. However, if the breakwater is designed to satisfy the criterion for the repairable limit state, the former method is more economical than the latter in all water depths.
