  • We realized the national standard of the candela, one of the SI units, by using two photometers with the spectral responsivity measured in reference to the absolute cryogenic radiometer. The external apertures of the photometers were fabricated using a diamond turning machine, and measured in terms of area with uncertainty of 0.05 %(k = 1). The candela is realized using a 1 kW FEL lamp and the characterized photometers on an optical bench. The uncertainty is budgeted to be 0.25 %(k = 1) considering the uncertainty of the spectral responsivity and the response uniformity of the detectors, the area of the external apertures, the color temperature of the lamp, and the positioning reproducibility of the photometers and the lamp. We verified the realized scale by comparing with the scale of National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA. They coincided with each other within 0.1%.

  • This paper presents an analytical and experimental study of a cryogenic machining for precision hard turning. A cryogenic circulation system is designed and mounted on the top of the tool insert. The machining process used is facing operation on a CNC turning center with dry and cryogenic conditions. The tool temperature and cutting forces are measured by the K-type thermocouple and by a three-component Kistler dynamometer, respectively. Both data are fed into the data acquisition program through an A/D card. Surface roughness and form accuracy of the machined surface are measured by WYKO NT2000. It is also found that surface roughness and form accuracy with cryogenic cooling are better than those with no coolant.

  • The large deformation at cryogenic temperature would be one of the effective methods to produce large bulk UFG materials. The effects of annealing temperature 150∼300$^{\circ}C$, on microstructure and mechanical properties of the sheets received 85% reduction at cryogenic temperature were investigated. In comparison with those at room temperature. Annealing of 5083 Al alloy deformed 85%, at 200$^{\circ}C$ for an hour, results in the considerable increase of tensile elongation without the great loss of strength and the occurrence of equiaxed grains less than 300nm in diameter.

  • A cryogenic butterfly valve is used to transfer the liquefied natural gas (LNG) which temperature is $-162^{\circ}C$. This valve is core part in the piping system using LNG. This paper performed coupling analysis using FEM to evaluate safety of cryogenic butterfly valve. Flow analysis is calculated numerically the CAE and CFD methods are useful to predict the thermal matter and the inner flow field of the valve. Thermal analysis and structural analysis used ANSYS Workbench.

  • This study describes the development of a 1-inch cryogenic glove valve for an LNG pumping system and localization development achieved through the performance test. The cryogenic valve used in the LNG pumping system plays an important role in maintaining a flow rate by LNG transportation. This trial manufactured goods, which was achieved through reverse engineering and developing the assembly process. The result of the leak test satisfied the internal pressure condition using the 78-bar normal temperature test and maintained the anti-leakage condition. Also, the result of the cryogenic leak test (BS 6364: low temperature test procedure) maintained anti-leakage at -196 and 52 bar, which satisfied the test standards.

  • Cryogenic rolling combined with warm rolling has been found more effective than a single cryogenic rolling process in improving the strength of a 5052 Al alloy. In this study, cryo-rolled 5052 Al alloys were warm-rolled at $175^{\circ}C$. A notable increase of tensile strength was achieved by the precipitation during warm rolling process. Mechanical behavior of this alloy was investigated using hardness and tensile tests. It was found that the cryogenic rolling process combined with warm rolling process was very effective in improving tensile strength.

  • The effect of annealing temperature on microstructures and mechanical properties of the 5052 Al sheets rolled 88% reduction at cryogenic temperature was investigated for the annealing temperature of 150 ~ $300^{\circ}C$, in comparison with those rolled at room temperature. The presence of equiaxed grains, whose size is about 200nm in a diameter, was observed in the alloy deformed 88% and annealed $200^{\circ}C$ for an hour. When compared with the deformation at room temperature, the deformation at cryogenic temperature showed the higher strengths and equivalent elongation after annealing at the annealing temperature below $200^{\circ}C$. However, for annealing above $250^{\circ}C$ materials deformed at cryogenic temperature showed the lower strength than those deformed at room temperature. This behavior might be attributed to the higher rate of recrystallization and growth in materials deformed at cryogenic temperature during annealing, due to the lager density of dislocations accumulated during the deformation.

In this study, cryo-rolled 5052 Al alloys were aged at $175^{\circ}C$. Warm rolling was conducted after dipping plates into silicon oil bath. • The deformation and annealing behaviors of a 1050 Al alloy deformed at cryogenic temperature were investigated, focusing on the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties. Especially, the effects of annealing temperature, $150~300^{\circ}C$, on microstructures and mechanical properties of the sheets received reduction of 88% at cryogenic temperature were investigated. The significant change in mechanical properties with the annealing temperatures of $200~300^{\circ}C$ would be attributed to the variations in the volume fraction of recrystallized grains and coarse equiaxed grains.
