  • Series Chinensis, Genus Iris, endemic to the far regions of East Asia, consists of four species and related varieties. This series is divided into two major groups (I. rossii and I. minutiaurea complex). In this study, the ITS region and matK gene sequences within nuclear ribosomal DNA and plastid DNA were analyzed in order to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among the I. minutiaurea complex (I. minutiaurea, I. odaesanensis, and I. koreana) and the taxonomic identities of a putative hybrid in Mt. Palgong. In the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2) region, a total of 106 cloned genomic sequences from three taxa were obtained to study the intragenomic polymorphisms of the ITS regions. Three taxa revealed high levels of intragenomic polymorphisms, indicative of incomplete nrDNA concerted evolution. This incomplete ITS concerted evolution in the series Chinensis may be linked to the recent species divergence and frequent interspecies hybridization of the series Chinensis. In the matK gene, three taxa were fairly separated by eleven variable sites. In eight individuals collected on Mt. Palgong, putative hybrids between I. odaesanensis and I. minutiaurea were clustered in the I. minutiaurea clade in the NJ (neighbor-joining) tree based on the matK gene. However, in the ITS tree, some of them were clustered in the I. odaesanensis clade and others were clustered in the I. minutiaurea clade. Therefore, the individuals on Mt. Palgong were formed by the hybridization between two taxa (I. odaesanensis and I. minutiaurea) and not through the lineage of I. koreana.

  • Soybean is well known to be originated from Korea and far-east Asian countries, and studies of many root nodule bacteria associated with soybean have mainly-focused on nitrogen fixation, but much less study was carried out on bacterial community in the rhizosphere of soybean. In this study, we analyzed the bacterial community in rhizosphere of Korean soybean, Daepungkong using the pyrosequencing method based on the 16S rRNA gene to characterize the change of the rhizosphere community structure according to the growth stages of soybeans and to elucidate bacterial core community in rhizosphere of soybean. Our results revealed that bacterial community of rhizosphere soil differed from that of bulk soil and was composed of a total of 21 bacterial phyla. The predominant phylum in the rhizosphere of soybean was Proteobacteria (36.6-42.5%) and followed by Acidobacteria (8.6-9.4%), Bacteroidetes (6.1-10.9%), Actinobacteria (6.4-9.8%), and Firmicutes (5.7-6.3%). The bacterial core community in soybean rhizosphere was mainly composed of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria throughout all growth stages. The OTU00006 belonged to the genus Bradyrhizobium had the highest abundance and Steroidobacter, Streptomyces, Devosia were followed. These results show that bacterial core community in soybean rhizosphere was mainly composed of OTUs associated with plant growth promotion and nutrient cycles.

  • Objectives: The current study aims to develop Korean Social Affective Visual Stimuli (K-SAVS) to arouse social affect. Methods: K-SAVS is composed of pictures of social situations among East Asians. Each picture contains a negative, positive, or neutral affect. Positive and negative stimuli were presented to one group of subjects. Negative and neutral stimuli were presented to another group of subjects. All subjects were required to fill out Affective Valence and Arousal Manikin. Results: In the initial test, 18 positive affective stimuli pictures (1 set) and 36 negative affective stimuli pictures (2 sets) were chosen from 95 stimuli pictures. Positive affective stimuli pictures showed higher valence (p < 0.001) and lower arousal (p < 0.001) than negative affective stimuli pictures. In the confirmatory test, 18 neutral stimuli pictures (1 set) were additionally selected out of the total of 79 pictures of neutral stimuli pictures and the pictures used in the former experiment. Neutral stimuli pictures showed higher valence (p < 0.001) and lower arousal (p < 0.001) than negative affective stimuli pictures. Conclusion: K-SAVS can be a valid and useful tool for inducing specific social affects of Koreans.

  • This study aims to categorize and analyze internationally standardized sea names based on their origins. Especially noting the cases of sea names using country names and dual naming of seas, it draws some implications for complementing logics for restoring the name East Sea. Of the 110 names for 98 bodies of water listed in the book titled Limits of Oceans and Seas, the most prevalent cases are named after adjacent geographical features; followed by commemorative names after persons, directions, and characteristics of seas. These international practices of naming seas are contrary to Japan's argument for the principle of using the name of archipelago or peninsula. There are several cases of using a single name of country in naming a sea bordering more than two countries, with no serious disputes. This implies that a specific focus should be given to peculiar situation that the name East Sea contains, rather than the negative side of using single country name. In order to strengthen the logic for justifying dual naming, it is suggested, an appropriate reference should be made to the three newly adopted cases of dual names, in the respects of the history of the surrounding region and the names, people's perception, power structure of the relevant countries, and the process of the standardization of dual names. In order to endow East Sea with the meaning of the east of the Eurasian continent, westerners' perception on the Far East should be elaborated in more detail.

  • Embryonic and pre-leptocephalic larvae development of the eel, Anguilla japonica, are described following natural fertilization in the indoor tank of $23^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Following a routine hormone treatment technique for the brood stock, female eels were artificially matured by weekly intramuscular injections of salmon pituitary extracts (SPE) at a dosage of 20 mg/kg body weight (BW) for a total of 10-14 doses to induce ovarian maturation, while male eels received weekly intramuscular injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) at a dosage of 1 IU/g BW for a total of 6-10 doses to induce testicular maturation in a separate aquarium and induced natural spawning. Fertilized eggs of about 1.0 mm in diameter were pelagic and showed a typical discoidal cleavage. Hatching occurs 38 hrs after fertilization at a water temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae measured about 3.0 mm in total length and the number of myomeres averages 42. Their mouths and anuses were opened at 4.5 days and the yolk sacs of the pre-leptocephalic larvae were almost absorbed at 6.5 days after hatching. Pre-leptocephalic larvae survive for 14.5 days. At this time they are $5.87{\pm}0.25mm$ in total length and have about 98 myomeres. However, morphological characterization of embryonic and pre-leptocephalic larvae were not different between natural fertilization and artificial fertilization by the dry method.

  • Subalpine species, Sorbus pohuashanensis in the Korean peninsula, which is assumed to be evolved from hybridization between S. commixta and an unknown species based on the flavonoids data. Morphometric analysis was conducted on the basis of 19 leaf and flower (or fruit) characters. A total of 721 samples in 13 populations of Sorbus pohuashanensis and S. commixta from Korea and additional specimens of S. commixta, S. pohuashanensis, and S. wilsoniana from Japan and China were examined to reveal the hybridization patterns and morphological differences. We found a preliminary evidence where Korean mountain rowan is more related to a Chinese inland taxon, S. wilsoniana, rather than Northeastern Chinese S. pohuashanensis in terms of flavonoids. The current morphological structure of the Korean mountaion rowan, however, which is more similar to S. commixta, was neither associated with that of S. wilsoniana nor that of S. pohuashanensis. This indicates that this morphological variation represents an intermediate of S. commixta and S. wilsoniana via a more ancient hybridization event in terms of qualitative characters, such as stipules, buds, and carpels. These morphometric differences together with other distinguishing characteristics suggest that the Korean mountain rowan should be considered as a conspecific species of S. commixta, although this demonstration of hybridization with the current phenetic species concept contradicts longstanding historical species concept.

  • Republic of Korea (ROK) log import companies have clustered around In-cheon, Jeon-buk and Busan. This reason related to port for log import. This study analyzed the quantity of Whole imported log transported by port. As the result of analysis, In-cheon port accounted for 56.9% log import, which is the maximum log import port in ROK. Next Bu-san port 20.9%, Gun-san port 17.9%. However, these port have declined the quantity of imported log transported since 2000. Gun-san port and Dong-hae port increased narrow range. The reason of why In-cheon and Bu-san port declined log import and Gun-san and Dong-hae port increased is that a sudden rise in the price of log in 2003, and import of using a container ship increased. In the addition, log import from Far eastern Russia, Germany and America increased through a container ship, however, declined log import through a bulk ship. Most of imported log at In-cheon port are from New zealand and Russia, imported logs at Bu-san port are almost from US and New zealand.

  • Recently, mutual economy cooperation in Northeast Asia has leaded steady growth among main countries of it and rather promoted a single economy circle. In this region, Busan container port competes with min container ports in China, Taiwan and Japan in it for attracting transshipment container traffic of north-Shanghai in China and for-east Russia. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest competitive strategies for Busan container port to attract container traffic in Northeast Asia To do so, it evaluates the preference of important ports in the competitive situation and competitiveness edgy of important ports in Northeast Asia, and finally proposes the relative order of important factors. Based on the evaluation of it, first, the Busan ports hue tn strengthen port facilities to attract more traffic and in detail, reinforce the number of berth, yard areas and handling equipment Second, they also have to provide high quality of services to deliver cargos in time, not being damaged and swiftly response to shipowner and shipper's claim, Third, they need to review the strategy to adopt flexible tariff policy and to invest the profit from tariff in port service and facilities, as providing higher port tariff level by a regular rate.

  • Candida biofilms are self-organized microbial communities growing on the surfaces of host tissues and medical devices. These biofilms have been displaying increasing resistance against conventional antifungal agents. The roots of Scutellaria baicalensis have been widely used for medicinal purpose throughout East Asia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of S. baicalensis aqueous extract upon the preformed biofilms of 10 clinical C. albicans isolates, and assess the mechanism of the antibiofilm activity. Its effect on preformed biofilm was judged using an XTT reduction assay and the metabolic activity of all tested strains were reduced ($57.7{\pm}17.3$%) at MIC values. The S. baicalenis extract inhibited (1, 3)-${\beta}$-D-glucan synthase activity. The effect of S. baicalensis on the morphology of C. albicans was related to the changes in growth caused by inhibiting glucan synthesis; most cells were round and swollen, and cell walls were densely stained or ruptured. The anticandidal activity was fungicidal, and the extract also arrested C. albicans cells at $G_0/G_1$. The data suggest that S. baicalensis has multiple fatal effects on target fungi, which ultimately result in cell wall disruption and killing by inhibiting (1, 3)-${\beta}$-D-glucan synthesis. Therefore, S. baicalensis holds great promise for use in treating and eliminating biofilm-associated Candida infections.
