This paper presents a method to detect buildings using shadow information in satellite imagery. We classify image into three categories of building region, shadow region and background region to find buildings with consistent intensity. After the removal of noises in building regions and shadow regions, buildings adjacent to shadow regions are detected using the constraint of building and shadow sizes. The algorithm has been applied to KOMPSAT and SPOT images and the result showed buildings are efficiently detected.

The aerial photos need in a simple object such as cartography and ground cover classification and also in a social objects such as the city plan, environment, disaster, transportation etc. However, the shadow, which includes when taking the aerial photos, makes a trouble to interpret the ground information, and also users, who need the photos in their field tasks, have a restriction. Generally the shadow occurs by the building and surface topography, and the detail cause is by changing of the illumination in an area. For removing the shadow this study uses the single image and processes the image without the source of image and taking situation. Also, applying the entropy minimization method it generates the 1-D gray-scale invariant image for creating the shadow edge mask and using the Canny edge detection creates the shadow edge mask, and finally by filtering in Fourier frequency domain creates the intrinsic image which recovers the 3-D color information and removes the shadow.
Deferred Shading is a shading technique that postprocesses pixels in the screen space, following geometry-only rendering passes with depth buffering. Unlike typical shadow mapping techniques, this technique allows us to render shadows from multiple light sources without changing the structure of the rendering pipelines. This paper presents a deferred shadow mapping technique and its extension to soft shadows using mipmapping. Our technique first generates visibility maps from light sources, and blurs the visibility maps for deferred shading. This strategy leads to efficient soft-edged shadows, but does not incorporate depth variation, producing light bleeding to some extent. In order to suppress the light-bleeding artifacts, we also propose a depth-adaptive mipmap sampling technique in the screen space.

Shadow is a physical phenomenon observed in natural scenes and has a negative effect on various image processing systems such as intelligent video surveillance, traffic surveillance and aerial imagery analysis. Therefore, shadow detection should be considered as a preprocessing process in all areas of computer vision. In this paper, we define and analyze various feature elements for shadow detection in a single natural image that does not require a reference image. The shadow elements describe the intensity, chromaticity, illuminant-invariant, color invariance, and entropy image, which indicate the uncertainty of the information. The results show that the chromaticity and illuminant-invariant images are effective for shadow detection. In the future, we will define a fusion map of various shadow feature elements, and continue to study shadow detection that can adapt to various lighting levels, and shadow removal using chromaticity and illuminance invariant images.
Various shadows are one of main factors that cause errors in vision based vehicle detection. In this paper, two simple methods, land mark based method and BS & Edge method, are proposed for vehicle detection and shadow rejection. In the experiments, the accuracy of vehicle detection is higher than 96%, during which the shadows arisen from roadside buildings grew considerably. Based on these two methods, vehicle counting, tracking, classification, and speed estimation are achieved so that real-time traffic parameters concerning traffic flow can be extracted to describe the load of each lane.
The purpose of this research is to arouse attention to the importance of eliminating the 'Shadow Encroaching Phenomena on the Essence' in advertising expression by interdisciplinarily applying ethicality. This research shows that when advertising expression is planned and executed without enough consideration of ethicality, short-term effectiveness to reach goals can be increased, but it is easy to induce an unintended 'Shadows' Boomerang Phenomena'. This research also proposes that such processes arouse consumers' ethical defense mechanisms, possibly causing the 'Shadow Encroaching Phenomena' in the end. In conclusion, this research proposes the following. First, the pursuit of commercial profit in a capitalistic society must be done under the premise of securing a consensus of ethicality in a common society. Second, under the premise of an integrated process of education, sharing, execution, and confirmation of ethicality, companies can achieve both the micro-practical goal of profit pursuit and the macro-environmental goal of ecological sympathy.
Geometric distortion and shadow effect due to capturing angle could be included in document copy images that are captured by a camera in stead of a scanner. In this paper, a clean black and white document image generation algorithm by distortion correction and shadow elimination based on a camera, is proposed. In order to correct geometric distortion such as straightening un-straight boundary lines occurred by camera lens radial distortion and eliminating outlying area included by camera direction, second derivative filter based document boundary detection method is developed. Black and white images have been generated by adaptive binarization method by eliminating shadow effect. Experimental results of the black and white document image generation algorithm by recovering geometrical distortion and eliminating shadow effect for the document images captured by smart phone camera, shows very good processing results.

In the license-plate recognition systems for automobile black Image, the license-plate image frequently has a shadow due to outdoor environments which are frequently changing. Such a shadow makes unpredictable errors in the segmentation process of individual characters and numbers of the license plate image, and reduces the overall recognition rate. In this paper, to improve the recognition rate in these circumstance, a license-plate image binarization algorithm is proposed removing the shadow effectively. The propose algorithm splits the license-plate image into the regions with the shadow and without. To find out the boundary of two regions, the algorithm estimates the curve for shadow boundary using the least-squares method. The simulation is performed for the license-plate image having its shadow, and the results show much higher recognition rate than the previous algorithm.

Additional high resolution satellite images, other period or site, are essential for efficient city modeling and analysis. However, the same ground objects have a radiometric inconsistency in different satellite images and it debase the quality of image processing and analysis. Moreover, in an urban area, buildings, trees, bridges, and other artificial objects cause shadow effects, which lower the performance of relative radiometric normalization. Therefore, in this study, we exclude shadow areas and suggest the selective histogram matching methods for image based application without supplementary digital elevation model or geometric informations of sun and sensor. We extract the shadow objects first using adjacency informations with the building edge buffer and spatial and spectral attributes derived from the image segmentation. And, Outlier objects like a asphalt roads are removed. Finally, selective histogram matching is performed from the shadow masked multi-temporal Quickbird-2 images.
