  • In this study, the iron and aluminium electrode was put in marine clay which was taken from south coast in Korea to increase the undrained shear strength by inducing the densification and cementation between clay particles and precipitation which was developed by electrode decomposition. For raising the cementation rate and reducing treatment time, high electric current( 2.5A) was applied in each electrode at semi-pilot scale soil box with marine clay. After the tests, the undrained shear strength was measured at designated points using cone penetration test device and sampling was conducted simultaneously in order to measure water content, pH and electric conductivity which would be the key for configuring the cementation effects indirectly. The iron electrode decomposition test results show that the water content adjacent to anode section decreased in 35% and increased in 13% at cathode section. The measured shear strength however, was increased considerably comparing to initial shear strength because of cementation effect between iron ions and soil particles. In case of aluminium electrode decomposition test, the distribution of measured shear strength and degree of improvement were more homogeneous than iron electrode decomposition test.

  • An annular flume has been constructed in order to estimate the erosion rate of fine cohesive sediments. Under an uniform bed condition, some erosion tests for Kaolinite sediments have been conducted to examine the performance of the flume and to check the validity of experimental method and results. In this study, the critical shear stress for erosion and the erosion rate coefficient are estimated and compared with the existing measurements. It is concluded that the performance of the annular flume is good enough to conduct erosion tests and the experimental method and results are valid.

  • The current Korean Concrete Design Code(KCI Code) requires the minimum and maximum content of shear s in order to prevent brittle and noneconomic design. However, the required content of the steel reinforcement In KCI Code is quite different to those of the other design codes such as fib-code, Canadian Code, and Japanese Code. Furthermore, since the evaluation equations of the minimum and maximum shear reinforcement for the current KCI Code were based on the experimental results, the equations can not be used for the RC members beyond the experimental application limits. The concrete tensile strength, shear stress, crack inclination, strain perpendicular to the crack, and shear span ratio are strongly related to the lower and upper limits of shear reinforcement. In this research, an evaluation equation for the minimum content of shear reinforcement is theoretical proposed from the Wavier's three principals of the mechanics of materials.

  • Because of crack control by steel bars after cracking the material models for reinforced concrete(RC) differ from those for plain concrete(PL). The nonlinear behavior of columns subjected to lateral load was simulated with reasonable accuracy in 3D analysis by applying distinct material models for RC and PL zone subdivided properly on the section. The shear strain is confirmed to develope unstably with ununiform distribution in out-of-plane direction. And this tendency becomes stronger as the thickness of column member increases in out-of-plane direction. If this ununiformity in strain distribution is not taken into consideration the capacity and the deformability of columns in shear dominant failure are overestimated excessively in two dimensional analysis. By introducing equivalent softening model a behavior of columns can be predicted too in two dimensional analysis.

  • The development of strain localization within shear zones is frequently observed during soil deformation. In fact, the phenomenon appears to be more often the norm rather than the exception. Conceptually, any soil condition that renders negative work increment is prone to localization. In this study, a broad range of soil and loading conditions are investigated to test this criterion, including: dilative soil subjected to drained shear (standard case), contractive soil sheared under undrained conditions, cavitation in dilative soil in undrained shear, inhomogeneous soils, particle alignment in contractive soils made of platy particles, soils that experience particle crushing, and the shear of low-moisture and/or lightly cemented loose soils. Unique specimens and test procedures are designed to separately test each of these soil conditions in the laboratory According to experimental test results, soil specimens with post-peak strain softening behavior are prone to progressive failure, localization of deformations, and shear banding. The state of stress, the soil density, inherent mechanical and geometrical properties of soil particles, low water content, and heterogeneity can contribute to triggering strain localization. Considering all possible cases of localization, the best method to obtain the critical state line in the laboratory is to use contractive homogeneous specimens subjected to drained shear.

  • Current ballast water treatment technologies are applying chemical or electrical treatment technology which are not free from secondary environmental pollution. The purpose of this study is to treat the ballast water by shear stress without an additional environmental pollution and to find out the optimal treatment apparatus. We tried to treat ballast water by applying shear stress with two different type of combination of inner and outer cylinder, such as non-pattern type and groove type. In the case of non-pattern type of inner and outer cylinder, sterilization effect was comparatively low because of a slip between inner and outer cylinder. But in the case of groove type of inner and outer cylinder, sterilization effect was superior to the non-pattern type. With a same revolutional speed of 8000rpm, an extinction effect was acquired in the gap of 1 mm of inner and outer cylinder at non-pattern type, but 3mm of that of groove type.

  • Konjac(Amorphophallus konjac) glucomannan dispersions were prepared from konjac flour, pretreated konjac flour and purified glucomannan. Konjac glucomannan dispersions showed non-Newtonian fluid behavior without yield stress and higher shear stress at fixed shear rate than the dispersions of gum xanthan, gum carrageenan and sodium alginate. While temperature increased, shear stress at fixed shear rate of konjac glucomannan dispersion steadily decreased. The apparent viscosity of konjac glucomannan dispersion was in its maximum at pH 7, whereas decreased on the outskirts of pH 7. The change in apparent viscosity was not found up to 1% sodium chloride addition in case of konjac glucomannan dispersion. However, the apparent viscosity of konjac glucomannan dispersion decreased up to sugar addition of 10%, afterwards increased.

  • Seismic isolation has been studied continuously as a solution of the seismic engineering to reduce the sectional forces and the damages of structures caused by earthquakes. To certify reliable design and installation of the seismic isolation systems, seismic isolation bearings should be fabricated under well planned quality control process, and proper evaluation tests for their seismic performance should be followed. In this study, shear property evaluation tests for the lead rubber bearings(LRB) and the rubber bearings(RB) were implemented and the temperature dependency tests were also implemented to evaluate the changes of shear properties according to the changes of temperature. After evaluation tests, the measured shear properties were compared to their design values and their deviation was analyzed comparing with the allowable error ranges specified in Highway Bridge Design Specifications. These results showed that a considerable number of isolation bearings have so large deviations from their design values that their error ranges were over or very close to the allowable ranges. And the test results for temperature dependency showed that the shear properties of isolation bearings would be changed in great degree by the change of temperature during their service period. If these two types of changes in their shear properties are superposed, it would possible that the changes of shear properties from their original design values are over than 50%.

  • The effects of the crosslinking caused by irradiation dose, molecular weights of the foaming materials, and various foaming processes on the foam structure of the polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The maximum gel content of the PP was 48% when the sheet was irradiated with 3.2 Mrad. This high gel content improved the cell structures by providing high thermal stability. The increase of both the gel content and structural development were stopped at the irradiation dose exceeding 3.2 Mrad. The increase of the molecular weights served to help produce a foam with particularly fine and even cell structures, along with improved thermal stability as well.

  • Differential equations and their solutions were formulated to describe the deflection of the tapered, nonuniform thickness and width's temple, clamped at one end while the perpendicular force is acting on the other end which is freely suspended. The model was derived based on laws of continuity at every point inside the elastic medium that the deflection, tangent slope, bending moment, shearing force must be continuous within the medium. The model is found to be in good agreement with measurements on the beta titanium temple with the correlation 0.992 and p=0.999(Chi test). Therefore it is possible to predict the effect of various temple parameters such as elastic modulus, thickness, width on the deflection of the temples being considered.
