Natural gas in tight reservoirs, one of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, has become a significant exploration and exploitation targets. Tight gas reservoirs are the gas-bearing rocks that commonly have a permeability of less than 0.1 millidarcy (mD). Tight gas reservoirs are characterized by extensive and deep locations as well as abnormal pressure such as over- or under-pressure. The tight gas reservoirs are independent of structural or stratigraphic traps, whereas conventional gases normally occur at these traps. Tight gas reservoirs can be productive when stimulated by hydraulic fracturing. Better production areas within the tight reservoir beds are referred to as sweet spots that are commonly caused by natural fractures, which should be understood and identified to enhance the recovery of the gas from tight reservoirs. The exploration and production techniques allow the commercial production of tight gas, one of environmentally friendly resources. Slant and horizontal wells have best production when they intersect the fractures. Gas production from the tight reservoirs has rapidly grown in U.S. and Canada. Indeed, the U.S. gas production of tight sandstones increases from 11.1% in 1990 to 24.1% in 2005. The presence of tight gas reservoirs has been suggested on the Korean offshore block 6-1. Paradigm shift from conventional to unconventional tight reservoir is required to develop the tight gas from the block.
The aim of this study was to provide basic data that could identify and help prevent a slow-moving landslide using an analysis of the relationship between below-ground characteristics and water from three slow-moving landslide areas in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Surface surveys, resistivity, seismic exploration, well logging, and boring surveys were conducted in the three areas. The main direction of discontinuous surface was matched with the slope direction of the three landslides. The results indicatedthat slow-moving landslides might occur in the direction of the slope. Underground water was distributed within the crush zones within the three landslide areas and flowed along the tensile cracks. There was a significant difference (p<0.01) between the mean angle of the tensile cracks and that of the underground waterflow (p=0.8019). These results indicated that the progress of a slow-moving landslide can be forecast by monitoring the location and flow of underground water within a known slow-moving landslide area.
In the Korea Ocean Nodule Development (KONOD)-1 area between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones of the northeastern equatorial Pacific, the pelagic sediment layer can be divided into two or three units on air-gun seismic profile. The acoustic units can be also correlated with those in the DSDP site 163 core. The topmost unit (unit I) is acoustically transparent and consists of zeolitic clay and radiolarian ooze of late Oligocene to middle Eocene age. Unit IIA is well-stratified and transparent in the lower part. consisting of the radiolarian ooze intercalated with chert beds and zeolitic clay of early Eocene to Paleocene age. Unit IIB is stratified with layers of silicified and compacted flinty-cherty nannofossil chalk (late Cretaceous) on top of the acoustic basement. Units I and IIA form the Line Islands Formation that overlies an unnamed formation of unit lIB. The entire layers and the unit I layer propressively thin northward, except near the Line Islands Ridge. The distribution of sediment layer has been controlled by the equatorial Cenozoic CCD and the northward spreading of the Pacific plate. The change of CCD corresponding to the subsidence and migration of the plate has determined the sediment composition of the DSDP 163 core passed across the equator of high sedimentation suite. The late Cretaceous sedimentary layer (unit IIB) in the 163 core was formed above the CCD south of the equator. The unit IIA resulted from rapid subsidence of the Pacific plate below the CCD in the Paleocene. The unit IIA is seen only in the west of 149 W. Both the units IIA and I were probably formed during the Pacific plate passing and after leaving the equatorial region respectively since early Eocene. In the south of the KONOD-l area, the unit I was redistributed by bottom current, a branch of the Antarctic Bottom Water flowing eastward guided by the Clipperton fracture zone. The activities of bottom currents were prolonged for a long geological time. Turbidite layers occur more than 350 km from the Hawaiian Ridge to near the Clarion fracture zone. They originated directly from the Hawaiian Ridge, filling the topographic lows.
Geophysical data including chirp (3 7 kHz) subbottom profile and detailed bathymetry were obtained over three seamounts in the Ogasawara Fracture Zone (OFZ) of the western Pacific, as a part of manganese crust survey onboard R/V Onnuri in 2003. The OFZ is a 150-km-wide, 600-km-long rift zone, which separates the East Mariana and Pigafetta Basin. The OFZ is unique in that it includes many seamounts (e.g., Magellan Seamounts andseamounts on the Dutton Ridge). The sub-seafloor acoustic echoes obtained near the OFZ were classified into following types on the basis of their characteristics: types I-1(pelagic sediment with parallel or subparallel reflectors), I-2 (pelagic sediment with no internal reflectors), and III-1 (reef build-up complex) on summit; types II-1 and III-2 (basement outcrop) on flank rift zone and upper slope, respectively; type III-3 (slump) on the lower slope and embayment between the flank rift zones; types II-2 (debrite) on the base of slope and basin floor; and types II-3 (turbidite
or pelagic sediment) and II-4 (turbidite) on the basin floor. The mass-wasting that produced the complex of type II-2 debrite and III-3 slump on the lower slope and basin may have been caused by (1) strong tensional stress in the OFZ which may cause the numerous fissures or basement faults and (2) complex of the faults on the summit and steep upper slope. The variations in the echo type of pelagic sediment in the summit of seamounts may be related with the changes in the depositional and/or erosional environments. Type I-2 pelagic sediment, which is characterized by a thin and intermittent coverage, was probably deposited at a sheltered area when the current was strong, whereas type I-1 pelagic deposit occurred during a stage of progressive sedimentation.

In this study, the damage to the bridge structure such as the crack and water leakage was assessed due to the increase of the vehicle load and traffic on the roads. In order to make this into the database, as a part of the automation system development for the bridge maintenance, the students themselves designed and developed their own inspection robotic system based on the idea of robots currently being developed overseas. Its field testing was conducted and its applicability assessed. During the design and fabrication, its connection to the details of the unit course taken in the undergraduate level was focused. In terms of new product development, the field application was possible due to the support of the academic-industrial cooperation firms. Furthermore, through the survey of the students, the improvements in the practical skills of the students who participated in this development process was affirmed.
Borehole radar reflection surveys were carried out in the horizontal borehole to detect EDZ while constructing the tunnel for the research facility of the nuclear waste disposal in Korea. The horizontal borehole has been bored at a length of 35 m from shelter to be parallel with the tunnel which would be planed. While the tunnel has been constructing with the explosive excavation, the borehole radar reflection surveys carried out 5 times with the interval of 2 or 4 days for monitoring EDZ. The most typical change of the reflection event resulted from the face of the wall of tunnel which had been produced newly by the excavation of the tunnel daily, EDZ has been detected with constructing images of difference between two measurement stages, and also the change of EDZ through the time has been done, which is due to the generation of crack and weakening of the rock strength of the face of the tunnel's wall near previous portion of the face of a blind end of tunnel according to explosive excavation.

In South Korea, sewage pipeline exploration devices have been developed using high resolution digital cameras of 2 mega-pixels or more. On the other hand, most devices are less than 300 kilo-pixels. Moreover, because 100 kilo-pixels devices are used widely, the environment for image processing is very poor. In this study, very low resolution ($240{\times}320$ = 76,800 pixels) images were adapted when it is difficult to detect cracks. Considering that the images of sewers in South Korea have very low resolution, this study selected low resolution images to be investigated. An automatic crack detection technique was studied using digital image processing technology for low resolution images of sewage pipelines. The authors developed a program to automatically detect cracks as 6 steps based on the MATLAB functions. In this study, the second step covers an algorithm developed to find the optimal threshold value, and the fifth step deals with an algorithm to determine cracks. In step 2, Otsu's threshold for images with a white caption was higher than that for an image without caption. Therefore, the optimal threshold was found by decreasing the Otsu threshold by 0.01 from the beginning. Step 5 presents an algorithm that detects cracks by judging that the length is 10 mm (40 pixels) or more and the width is 1 mm (4 pixels) or more. As a result, the crack detection performance was good despite the very low-resolution images.

State assessment of an operational tunnel is usually done by performing visual inspection and durability tests by following the detailed guideline for safety inspection (SI) and/ or precision inspection for safety and diagnosis (PISD). In this study, 12 NATM tunnels, which have been operational for more than 10 years, were inspected to figure out the cause of longitudinal cracks for the purpose of modifying the scoring items in the state assessment NATM tunnel related to the longitudinal crack and the thickness of concrete lining. All investigated tunnels were classified into four groups depending on the shape and usage of each tunnel. The causes of longitudinal crack occurrence were analyzed by investigating the correlations between the longitudinal crack and the following four factors: the patterns of ground excavation; construction state of primary support system; characteristics of material properties of the concrete lining; and thickness of lining which was obtained by Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) tests. It was found that influencing factors causing longitudinal cracks in the lining were closely related with the construction condition of the primary support system, i.e. shotcrete, rockbolt, and steel-rib; crack occurrences were not much affected by the excavation patterns. As for the properties of concrete lining materials, occurrence of the longitudinal crack was mostly affected by the following three items: w/c ratio; contents of cement; and strength of lining. When estimating the lining thickness of the concrete lining by GPR tests and taking thickness effect into account in the statement assessment, it was concluded that increase of the index score by an average of 0.03 (ranging from 0.01 up to 0.071) is needed; a more realistic way of state assessment should be proposed in which the increased index score caused by lack of lining thickness should be taken into account.

The durability and safety of reinforced concrete structures significantly depend on the reinforcement conditions, concrete cover thickness, cracks, and concrete strength. There are two ways to accurately determine the information on reinforcing bars embedded in concrete - the local destructive method and the non-destructive rebar detection test. In general, the non-destructive rebar detection tests, such as the electromagnetic wave radar method, electromagnetic induction method, and radiation method, are adopted to avoid damage to the structural elements. The moisture content and temperature of concrete affect the dielectric constant, which is the electrical property of concrete, and cause interference in the non-destructive rebar detection test results. Therefore, in this study, the effects of the electromagnetic wave radar method and electromagnetic induction method have been analyzed according to the temperature and surface moisture content of concrete. Due to the technological advancement and development of equipment, the average error rate was less than 5% in the specimens at 24℃, irrespective of their operating principles. Among the tested methods, the electromagnetic induction method showed very high accuracy. The electromagnetic wave radar method indicated a relatively small error rate in the dry state than in the wet state, and exhibited a relatively high error rate at high temperatures. It was confirmed that the error could be reduced by applying the electromagnetic wave radar method when the temperature of the probe was low and in a dry state, and by using the electromagnetic induction method when the probe was in a wet state or at a high temperature.
Generally, the method used most widely for rock mass classification is considering the rock strength and development of joint frequency. However, if rock bed has micro-crack and long joint, this method is not rational. Therefore, the difficulties of excavation in the rock bed with complicated geological condition are decided by combining joint frequency. indoor tests (uniaxiall compressive strength, point load test, indoor elastic wave velocity, etc.) and field seismic refraction survey, and the rock mass classification should be implemented by considering their interrelationship.
