  • Lately, massive concrete structures are increasingly built. In such massive structures, the heat of hydration of mass concrete causes thermal cracks. To avoid thermal crack, methods widely acceptable for practical use are pre-cooling, pipe cooling and control of placing height. Thermal stress analysis is performed to find the way of controlling the thermal crack of pier footing mat in this paper. The footing mat model for the analysis is $12m{\times}14m$area and 3m height. The analysis results are compared with method of control of lift height and method of pipe cooling. The analysis results show that thermal crack can be removed by method of placing control and pipe cooling at footing mat placed on the ground.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the cracking behavior and suggest the method of controlling the cracking in concrete box culvert for power transmission due to differential drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage cracking is mainly influenced by the moisture diffusion coefficient that determines moisture diffusion rate inside concrete structures. In addition to the diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient of concrete surface and relative humidity of ambient air simultaneously affect the moisture evaporation from concrete inside to external air outside. Within the framework of drying shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis, which involves these three influencing factors to predict and control the shrinkage cracking of concrete. In this study, moisture diffusion and stress analysis cor responding to drying shrinkage on concrete box culvert are performed with consideration of diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient, and relative humidity of ambient air. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior due to differential drying shrinkage of box culvert shows the different feature according to three influencing factors and the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks can be suggested from this study.

  • Hydraulic rock splitting is a technique which leads to failure of rockmass by means of water injection with a pressure higher than the tensile strength of rockmass, using straddle packer installed in boreholes drilled from free surface. Field tests were conducted in this study for several slopes of biotite granite according to various designs for borehole layout and water injection. Test results showed that new cracks were generated to connect to adjacent holes or that pre-existed cracks were propagated by injection, finally leading to failure. In particular, this study suggests the possibility of controlling the direction of generated cracks with guide slot, since new cracks were generated parallel to the guide slots carved on a borehole wall before injection. Various types of borehole layout and injection methods should be further developed for the practical uses, considering the factors influencing on crack generation.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of various joint sealant on reducing the reflection cracking of asphalt concrete overlay on cement concrete pavement. The test method used was an accelerated reflection cracking test in shear mode, which was developed for evaluation of reflection cracking resistance of overlaid asphalt concrete in laboratory. The test results showed that use of joint sealants resulted in a significant reduction of reflection cracking. When sealant E was used, the fatigue life was the highest, with relatively larger horizontal deformation. When Sealant B was used, the dynamic stability was the highest with the smallest horizontal deformation. In general, the greater the tensile strength of sealant, the better the crack resistance of the mixture.

  • Since the first underground LNG tank was constructed in Incheon, continuously many LNG tanks were constructed in Tongyoung and Pyongtaek. The storage capacity of LNG tank increased by 200,000kl and the structure size and the concrete mixing design has changed. The crack of concrete induced by the heat of hydration is a serious problem, particularly in massive concrete structures. In order to control the thermal crack of massive concrete, the low heat portland cement(type Ⅳ) is applied to bottom annular part, bottom central part, lower walls and ring beam. In this study, in order to thermal crack control about the LNG tank wall(lot 8 of #16 Pyongtaek LNG tank) in winter, analysed the concrete temperature, the extention of term, the curing condition and the concrete mixing design. When the concrete mixing design is changed from OPC+FA25% to LHC+FA25%, the thermal crack index is 1.33 and satisfied with construction specifications(over 1.2).

  • The purpose of this study are to evaluated bond, flexural properties and control of plastic shrinkage cracking of crimped type synthetic fiber with amplitude 6 mm and height 1.8 mm reinforced cement based composites. Bond and flexural test were conducted in accordance with the JCI-SF 8 and JCI SF-4 standard, respectively. The plastic shrinkage cracking test was conducted for evaluating the effect of fiber in reducing shrinkage cracking in cement based composites. Test results indicated that the crimped typel synthetic fibers performed significantly better than the straight type fiber in terms of interface toughness and pullout load and the crimped type synthetic fibers improved the flexural toughness of concrete. Also, the increasing the crimped type synthetic fiber volume fraction from 0.00% to 1.00% improved the plastic shrinkage cracking resistance. Specially, the effect of control of plastic shrinkage cracking is excellent at the more than 0.5% fibre volume fraction.
