  • To prevent the occurrence of fractures in metal structures, it is very important to evaluate the 3D crack growth process in those structures and any related parts. In this study, tension tests and two simulations, namely, Simulation-I and Simulation-II, were performed using XFEM to evaluate crack growth in three dimensions. In the tension test, Mode I crack growth was observed for a notched metal specimen. In Simulation-I, a 3D reconstructed model of the specimen was created using CT images of the specimen. Using this model, an FE model was constructed, and crack growth was simulated using XFEM. In Simulation-II, an ideal notch FE model of the same geometric size as the actual specimen was created and then used for simulation. Obtained crack growth simulation results were then compared. Crack growth in the metal specimen was evaluated in three dimensions. It was shown that modeling the real shape of a structure with a crack may be essential for accurately evaluating 3D crack growth.

  • The service life of concrete structure is to a great extent influenced by crack developed at early ages of concrete material. Especially, hydration heat is a main cause of thermal cracking at mass concrete structures. The thermal cracking of massive structure is analyzed of the thermal cracking index which was presented Concrete Standard Specifications. The thesis analyzed the thermal cracking index which considered various variable (cement type, height of casting, curing condition, concrete mixing temperature, the unit cement content) at internal restricted mass concrete. The analysis result is denoted increase and decrease rate of thermal cracking index whenever the variables change. The results is helped to understand thermal cracking every time structures is designed and constructed. And I think that it is useful economic and stable design of mass concrete structures.

  • In this study, a crack monitoring system capable of detecting cracks based on image processing techniques was developed to effectively check cracks, which are the main damage of concrete structures, and a program capable of imaging and analyzing cracks was developed using machine vision. This system provides objective and quantitative data by replacing the appearance inspection that checks cracks with the naked eye. The verification of the development system was applied to the construction site of a self-healing concrete water tank to monitor the crack and the amount of change in the crack width according to age. In the case of crack width detected by image analysis, the difference from the measured value using a digital microscope was up to 0.036 mm, and the crack healing effect of self-healing concrete could be confirmed through the reduction of crack width.

  • Horizontal cracks at the mid-depth of concrete slabs were observed at a section of the continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) structures on the Korea Highway Corporation's Test Road. To investigate the existence and the extent of horizontal cracks in the concrete slab, a number of cores were taken from the section of CRCP. To identify the causes of horizontal cracks, numerical analyses were conducted. Several variables relative to design, material, and environment were considered in the studies to evaluate possible causes of horizontal cracking. A numerical model of CRCP was developed using the finite element discretization, and the shear and normal tensile stress distributions in CRCP were investigated with the model. Numerical analysis results show that the maximum shear and normal tensile stresses develop near the depth of steel bars at transverse cracks. If those maximum stresses reach the strength of concrete, horizontal cracks occur. The maximum stresses become higher as the environmental loads, coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete, and elastic modulus of concrete increase.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior of a cracked and patch-repaired Ah2024-T3 panel has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The overall crack growth rate was reduced The crack propagation into the adjacent hole was also retarded by introducing the patch repair. AE signals due to crack growth after the patch repair and those due to debonding of the plate-patch interface were discriminated by usiag the principal component analysis. The former showed high center frequency and low amplitude, whereas the latter showed long rise tine, low frequency and high amplitude. This type of AE signal recognition method could be effective for the prediction of fatigue crack growth behavior in the patch-repaired structures with the aid of AE source location.

  • Crack and seat method has been used in United States to prevent reflection cracks of overlay that may be caused by excessive movement at discontinuity of old concrete pavement. This method provide optium space of discontinuity by generating additional discontinuity in old concrete pavement. In this study the effect of various factors on the performance such as IRI and distress at after applying crack and seat method were investigated by using LTPP data.

  • The temperature variation of concrete pavement at early-age significantly affects the initiation and propagation of its early-age cracks. This implies that the measurement and analysis of early age temperature trend are necessary to examine the causes of early age cracks in the concrete pavement. In this study, it is investigated how the early age temperature trend in concrete pavement affects the random crack initiation and behaviors of saw-cut joints using the actual construction site which is located at the KHC test road. During 72 hours after placing the concrete pavement, the ambient air temperature and temperatures at the top, middle, and bottom in concrete pavement were measured and the random crack initiation in concrete slabs and early age behaviors in the joints were surveyed. The investigation results indicate that the first random crack was initiated at one of the slabs placed in the early morning which have higher temperature changes during early 72 hours. The movement of slab was influenced by the early-age crack in the joint. It suggested that the different occurrence time of the cracks in the joint had an influence on the behavior of the cracks. Besides, the slab constructed In the morning had higher possibility of crack initiation than that in the afternoon. The rarely occurred cracks had bigger gap than other cracks.

  • A crack is the main cause to affect the integrity of tunnel lining as well as leakage, spalling, exposed rebar, corrosion, carbonation and so on. Since the 1980, NATM has prevailed on excavation method and geotechnical philosophy in tunnel. Although the pattern of cracks has been reported by several engineers' effort, it was only focused on longitudinal cracks of lining. Eleven operational NATM tunnels have been conducted with the precise inspection for safety and diagnosis by KISTEC (Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Incorporation). With those results, the crack patterns by the spatial distribution and appearance for each tunnel have been analyzed and the cause of occurrence for seven common types of cracks in NATM tunnels was classified. Additionally, the longitudinal crack on lining above duct slab was figured out by numerical simulation and field inspection. Each crack has been analyzed by CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) scanner image with 3D configuration. Each type of cracks is also explained with output of experimental and condition of construction. Defined cracks on NATM tunnels will be good example for periodical inspection and precise inspection for safety and diagnosis.

  • Repairing concrete structures depended on only technician' experience without quality test standards would have problems. For solving those problems, this paper has analyzed the relations between injection quantify and crack width, injection time and crack width, injection pressure and crack width, injection pressure/time and crack width, injection quantity and structure size, injection quantify and individual crack Position, injection time and crack width/structure thickness. The data gained from this analysis would be helpful for systematic quality control of repairing concrete structures.
