Fatigue Crack Growth Rates and Directions in STS304 under Mode I and Mixed Mode (단일 및 혼합모드하에서 304스테인리스강의 피로균열 진전속도와 방향특성)

  • The fatigue crack growth under mixed mode condition has been discussed within the scope of linear fracture mechanics such as maximum tangential stress, maximum tangential principal stress and minimum strain energy density. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of fatigue test crack growth in 304 stainless steel under mixed node. The fatigue test results carried out by using inclined pre-crack specimens was compared to both of the theoretical predictions of the criteria, maximum tangential stress and stain energy density. As difference from theoretical analysis, the transition region from mixed mode to mode I appeared in the fatigue test. There is deep relationship between the angle of slanted pre-crack and transition. Therefore, as applying the different stress intensity factor to each node I+II and mode I, the directions and rates of fatigue crack growth are evaluated more accurately under mixed mode.

  • Alloy 600 재료의 PWSCC의 개념을 소개하고 그 발생과 전파에 미치는 미세조직, 온도, 응력, 수화학 환경등의 주요인자를 정리하였다. ◯ PWSCC란 니켈 기지 합금인 Alloy 600와 그 용접재인 Alloy 82/182 재료가 원자로 1차수 환경에서 보이는 응력부식균열을 의미한다. ◯ Alloy 600의 PWSCC에 미치는 주요 인자에는 재료의 미세조직, 응력, 온도, 환경등이 있으며 그 중에서 재료의 미세조직이 가장 지배적인 인자이다. ◯ 재료내의 탄화물은 탄소 함량과 열처리 조건에 따라 달리 형성되며 입계를 따라 준연속적으로 잘 발달된 입계탄화물을 가지는 재료가 PWSCC에 저항성을 가진다. ◯ 손상속도는 부가 응력의 네 제곱에 비례하여 증가하는 것으로 알려져 있다. ◯ PWSCC는 Arrhenius 관계의 열활성화 과정(thermally activated process)이다. ◯ 용존수소량에 따라 재료의 부식전위가 정해지는데 전극전위가 Ni/NiO 평형전위 부근에서 가장 큰 균열 성장 민감도를 보인다는 데는 연구자들 사이에 이견이 없다. 그러나 균열의 개시에 대한 용존수소량의 영향에 대해서는 이견이 있다.

An Effect of TIG Dressing on Fatigue Characteristics of Non Load-Carrying Fillet Welded Joints (TIG처리에 따른 하중비전달형 필렛용접부의 피로특성)

  • In this study, the 4-point bending test has been performed in order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strength of as-welded specimens has been satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of domestics and AASHTO & JSSC, and fatigue strength at $2{\times}106cycles$ of TIG-dressing specimens has been increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks have been occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes are low, and grown as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has been closely related to the flank angel and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has been largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

Behavior of the Crack Initiation, Transition and Fatigue Crack Growth of Rail Steel (레일강의 균열발생·천이 및 피로균열진전거동)

  • In the present study, crack initiation criteria, static failure and tensile mode fatigue behavior for a rail steel are evaluated to assure the railway vehicle's safety. The transverse fissure, which is the most critical damage in the rail, is initiated by the maximum shear stress and its location is subsurface. In addition, the possibility of transition from the shear mode to the mixed mode increases with increasing the length of subsurface crack. Because of the brittleness by the welding, the fracture toughness of the welded part is lower than of the base metal. For low ${\Delta}K$, the stage II fatigue crack growth rates of the welded part is slower than of the base metal but, for high ${\Delta}K$, this different behavior for fatigue crack growth rate is nearly diminished. These trends are more remarkable for low stress ratio, R=0.1. It is believed that this behavior is caused by the change of the microstructure which that of the welded part is coarser than of base metal.

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) instances have been reported in the Alloy 600 reactor pressure vessel head penetration nozzle and the Alloy 82/182 dissimilar metal butt weld nozzle in several PWRs. Therefore, in-service inspection programs have been adopted worldwide to prevent failure at the weld region. If a PWSCC is observed at the dissimilar metal weld region during inspection, its structural integrity should be evaluated; however, this requires considerable time and effort, and this might lead to a decrease in the plant utilization coefficient. To prevent this, KHNP-CRI have established integrity assessment criteria and developed a computer program for the fast evaluation and judgment of PWSCC. In this paper, the results and current status of the same are presented. Through this study, criteria for the structural integrity evaluation of PWSCC have been established, and a computer program has been developed to realize technical means for the evaluation of PWSCC structural integrity.

  • The principle objective of this study is to evaluate the fatigue behavior of structural steel components of highway bridges subjected to service stresses. The main aspects of this investigation are; 1) a measurement and statistical analysis of service stress cycles observed in highway bridge. 2) fatigue tests under equivalent constant-amplitude(CA) loading and simulated variable-amplitude(VA) loading 3) a evaluation of the fatigue behavior under VA-loading by eqivalent root mean cube (RMC) stress range. Theoretically, the RMC model is adequate in evaluation of fatigue behavior under VA-loading, because the regression coefficient (m) of crack growth rate is 3 approximately. The result of fatigue test shows that the RMC model is fitter than the current RMS model in fatigue evaluation under VA-loading. The interaction effects and sequence effects under VA-loading affect little fatigue life of structural components. As the transition rate of stress ranges is higher, the crack growth rate is higher.

A Study on the Fatigue Life Prediction of Al-2024 with Corrosion (부식을 고려한 항공기재료의 부식피로수명예측 연구)

  • In this study, test results for fatigue crack propagation of Al-2024-T3511 are presented considering corrosion effects, and fatigue lifes are compared for the cases of corrosion and non-corrosion. Higher corrosion environments show lower fatigue life and faster crack growth. To predict the corrosion fatigue life, a corrosion factor concept is newly introduced and applied in Paris' law. The predicted results show good agreement with experimental data and this corrosion fatigue model can be successfully used for the prediction of fatigue life of aluminum structure with corrosion effects.

  • 용액인상법에 의하여 Cr$^{3+}$ 이온이 0.1-0.2% 주입된 Alexandrite (Cr$^{3+}$ :BeAl$_2$O$_4$) 단결정을 성장하고, 성장한 단결정을 이용하여 레이저 소자를 제조하였다. 고품질의 단결정을 성장할 수 있는 결정성장조건을 규명하고, Cr$^{3+}$ 이온의 유효편석 계수를 계산하였으며, 결정 결함 및 분광 물성을 조사하였다. 결정성장 실험 결과, 유속 3 1/min의 질소분위기, 이리듐 도가니 및 <001>방위의 Alexandrite 단결정을 종자결정으로 사용하여 결정을 성장하는 경우 최적의 결정성장 조건은 인상속도 0.5-1.0 mm/hr와 회전속도 20-25 rpm이었다. 육성된 결정은 (100)면이 넓게 발달되었으며, (120)과 (010)면이 측면에 발달되는 판상의 직팔각기둥의 형태로 성장되었다. 결정결함으로써 parasite crystal의 형성과 경계면의 균열, striation, inclusion 등이 검출되었다. Alexandrite 단결정 내에 분포하는 Cr$^{3+}$ 이온의 유효편석계수 k$_{eff}$는 2.8로 계산되었다. 분광물성으로써 실온에서의 $^4$A$_2$$\longrightarrow$$^4$T$_2$(689.6-489.3 nm), $^4$A$_2$$\longrightarrow$$^4$T$_1$(489.3-311.33m) 천이에 의한 흡수를 확인하고, $^4$T$_2$$\longrightarrow$$^4$A$_2$(650-800 nm), $^2$E$\longrightarrow$$^4$A$_2$에 의한 nophonon line R$_1$, R$_2$(680.4, 678.5 nm) 및 $^2$T$_1$$\longrightarrow$$^4$A$_2$(655.7, 649.3, 645.2 nm)의 형광방출 스펙트럼을 얻었으며, 형광수명은 0.264 ms로 조사되었다. 제조된 레이저 발진봉은 직경 6.3 m, 길이 45 nm이었다.

Integrity Evaluation for 3D Cracked Structures(II) (3차원 균열을 갖는 구조물에 대한 건전성 평가(II))

  • Three Surface cracks are among the more common flaws in aircraft and pressure vessel components. Accurate stress intensity analyses and crack growth rate data of surface-cracked components are needed for reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths. Three Dimensional finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor for surface cracks existing in structures. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Nodes are generated by bucket method, and quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in cylindrical structures subjected to pressure is calculated. Analysis results by present system showed good agreement with those by ASME equation and Raju-Newman's equation.

  • The stiffened panel is representative of a large portion of aircraft construction and therefore has much practical importance. In this paper, the influence of various shape parameters on the stress intensity factors and the fatigue crack growth in the panels with bonded composite stiffeners are studied experimentally. Results are presented as crack growth rates for various values of crack lengths, stiffness ratios, and stiffening Materials.
