This study aimed to investigate the incidence of the canine ear dermatoses caused by mitts and the relativity of the causative mites of canine dermatoses to the pruritic dermatoses of the families possessing the pet dogs. Total 970 samples were collected from the lesional hairs and scales of the ear of pet dogs referred to Chung-Woon animal clinic in Seoul from January, 1990 to December, 1995. The mites were collected from the samples by means of the washing method . Presence of pruritic dermatoses in the families possessing the pet dog was evaluated. Among 2,147 mites collected from 970 samples, 2,117 specimens were Octonectes cwnotis and others were Scrcoptes conis (30 mites). O. cwnotis were found in 382 samples out of total 970 samples (39.4%) and S. cams were found in 3 samples (0.3%). Although two families out of 382 families that possessed the diseased pet dog by O. cwnotis had the family histories of pruritic dermatoses, their pruritic dermatoses were not related to the infestation by O. cwnotis. In conclusion, O. cwnotis, the most common canine mite producing pruritic ear dematoses, does not cause pruritic dermatoses in man.

Psoroptic mites can cause severe pruritic otitis externa with crusts in rabbits. In this case report, three rabbits with a psoroptic mite infestation were treated with a formulation containing 10% imidacloprid and 50% permethrin at a dose of 0.4 ml regardless of body weight. One week after treatment, the rabbits showed mild pruritus with no crusts, mites or eggs. Four weeks after treatment, there were no clinical signs, mites or eggs observed in the rabbits. The rabbits were treated successfully with this combination without adverse reactions for 8 weeks after treatment. This case report suggests that a single topical application of a combination of imidacloprid and permethrin may be an effective and practical treatment for psoroptic mite infestations in pet rabbits.

A 6-month-old, male, American cocker spaniel was presented with severe pruritus, alopecia and head shaking. In physical examination generalized erythema, papules, scales and crust were observed. Otic discharge was dark-brown colored in both ear canals. After extensive dermatologic diagnostic evaluations, the infestation of scabies, ear mites, Malassezia spp, cocci were proved. Therefore, he was treated with selamectin 6 ㎎/㎏ which was applied to the skin in a single spot twice a week for 2 weeks in order to investigate the effect of selamectin on canine scabies and ear mites by this treatment protocol. When he was rechecked at 14th day after fourth being administered, scabies and ear mites wasn't seen. The dermatological signs, pruritus, papules were remarkably decreased and only slight scales were observed. After treatment of scabies and ear mites, the clavamox and koto-conazole was administered for cocci and Malassezia spp, respectively, for 1 week and topical therapy was initiated. with sebolytic and chlorhexidine shampoo once a week for 3 weeks. Two months later skin lesions were normal dermatologically and the hair was fully recovered. Despite of the expensiveness the selamectin is very effective in the dogs that infected by scabies and ear mites as this treatment protocol.

The in vivo and in vitro effects of oriental herb extracts of Cassia obtusifolia, Taraxacum platycarpum and Ulmusmacrocarpa on anti-atopic allergic reaction were evaluated in this study. A mixture of these extracts exhibited more potent anti-allergic activities in human mast cells than those from individual extracts. The herbal mixture significantly inhibited the release of compound 48/80-induced $\beta$-hexosaminidase release in the human mast cell line, HMC-1. The mixture also suppressed the production of PMA and A23187-induced inflammatory cytokines in HMC-1 cells. To further investigate the in vivo effects of the herbal mixture, a Dermatophagoides farinae (DF)-induced atopic dermatitis mouse model was utilized. Oral administration of the herbal mixture significantly decreased the ear thickness and swelling in DF treated NC/Nga mice in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, serum levels of IgE and interleukin-4 (IL-4) were significantly decreased, whereas interferon-gamma (IFN-$\gamma$) levels were increased in the mixture administrated groups when compared to the control. Taken together, our data indicate the possibility of using a mixture of the oriental herb extract to relieve symptoms of atopic dermatitis.
