  • The cone intercept method (CIM) is generally used for attitude determination of a spin-stabilized satellite. The method is popularly used on a transfer orbit, but it is well known that it can also be used for the geosychronous orbit. In this paper, the CIM is applied to the geosynchronous orbit and its performance and limitations will be investigated from the results. The CIM impliments two sensors (Sun and Earth sensors). The Sun sensor finds the angle between the spin-axis and the direction vector to the Sun and the Earth sensor does the angle between the spin-axis and the direction vector to the Earth. By using these two cone angles, the CIM gives the direction of the spin-axis of the satellite.

  • Optimization problems are formulated to calculate optimal impulses for deflecting Earth-Crossing Objects using a Nonlinear Programming. This formulation allows us to analyze the velocity changes in normal direction to the celestial body's orbital plane, which is neglected in many previous studies. The constrained optimization in the three-dimensional space is based on a patched conic method including the Earth's gravitational effects, and yields impulsive ${\Delta}V$ to deflect the target's orbit. The optimal solution is dependent on relative positions and velocities between the Earth and the Earth-crossing objects, and can be represented by optimal magnitude and angle of ${\Delta}V $ as a functions of a impulse time. The perpendicular component of ${\Delta}V $ to the orbit plane can sometimes play un-negligible role as the impulse time approaches the impact time. The optimal ${\Delta}V $ is increased when the original orbit of Earth-crossing object is more similar to the Earth's orbit, and is also exponentially increased as the impulse time reaches to the impact time. The analyses performed in present paper can be used to the deflection missions in the future.

  • In 2018 and 2019, GEO-KOMPSAT-2A and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B will be launched in order to succeed the COMS mission. The two satellites will be collocated in $128.25{\pm}0.05$ degrees East. For precise ranging and orbit determination, the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B will be equipped with LRA (Laser Retroreflector Assembly) and SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging) systems will be utilized. This systems are located in Geochang. In this case, the laser beam emitted from the SLR station can cause problems in terms of safety of optical payloads and image quality. As a solution of this possibility, the laser ranging will be done during the night time when the shutters of the optical payloads remain closed. Still, the optical payload of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A is not safe from the laser beam because its optical payload shall continue its mission for 24 hours a day. In order to handle this problem, the laser ranging shall be limited to time slots when the angular distance between two satellites observed from the Geochang SLR station is large enough. In this paper, through orbit simulations, the characteristics of variation of the angular distance between the two satellites is analyzed to figure out the time slots when laser ranging is allowed.

  • Thermal condition according to the operation attitude of a satellite in orbit would be essential to be known because the orbit attitude is a dominant factor to affect satellite thermal design. In this paper, the change in space thermal environment and the thermal effect in thermal design are studied for a low earth orbit satellite according to the yaw motion. The present satellite retains sun-pointing attitude during daylight due to the fixed type solar arrays. And it also moves along the orbit with constant yaw motion in a longitudinal axis so that a star tracker which is a star sensor for satellite's attitude control always looks into the deep space. This attitude is considered in its better visibility to the stars for a successful mission operation. Also, it is required to access the corresponding thermal effects due to the yaw motion. Therefore, we try to verify these by the thermal analysis for the satellite thermal model with the yaw motion.

  • Variation of the Local Time of Ascending Node (LTAN) has been analysed according to initial inclinations when the altitude of Sun-synchronous satellite is continuously decreased due to the atmospheric drag. Orbit predictions of 3 years have been performed with the satellite of 500 km altitude when the initial LTAN were set to 06:00, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00. Different profiles of the inclination and LTAN have been obtained according to the satellite altitude decay and initial LTAN value. Using the profiles of the inclination and LTAN, initial orbital elements can be derived for minimizing the LTAN variations during the mission life time of the sun-synchronous satellite without any on-board thrusters for orbit maneuvers.

  • The transition zone of the railway is the section which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied like as tunnel-earthwork, bridge-earthwork and concrete track-ballasted track. There are about 450 tunnel-bridge transition sections on Kyungbu high-speed railway line. It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of these transition zones, in order to secure the train running safety. So, we developed a finite element model of the moving wheel loading to simulate the behavior of bridge-earthwork transitions in this paper. The most distinctive characteristics of the model proposed is to simulate the real wheel behavior on rail. And the main analysis object is to evaluate and compare the deformation characteristics of the transition zone according to the reinforcement methods and length of transition zone which is adopted to high-speed railway. Based on the analysis results, we assessed the effect of the reinforcements on the transition zone of high-speed railway.

  • In this study, the orbit-based sensor modeling is applied to the digital plotting and the accuracy of digital plotting is analyzed. The KOMPSAT-2 satellite image with orbit-attitude model is used for the analysis. The precise sensor modeling with various combination of parameters is performed for the stereo satellite image. In addition, we analyze the error range of ground control points by applying the result of stereo modeling to digital survey system. According to the result, it is possible to produce digital map using stereo image with a small number of GCPs when the orbit-based sensor modeling for KOMPSAT-2 is applied. This means that it is suitable for the generation of digital map on a scale of 1/5,000 to 1/25,000 considering the resolution of KOMPSAT-2 image.

  • Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) for the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service was launched onto Geostationary Earth Orbit on June 27, 2010 and it is currently under normal operation service after the In-Orbit Test (IOT) phase. The COMS is located on $128.2^{\circ}$ East of the geostationary orbit. In order to perform the three missions, the COMS has 3 separate payloads, the meteorological imager (MI), the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), and the Ka-band antenna. Each payload is dedicated to one of the three missions, respectively. The MI and GOCI perform the Earth observation mission of meteorological observation and ocean monitoring, respectively. During the IOT phase the functionalities and the performances of the COMS satellite and ground station have been checked through the Earth observation mission operation for the observation of the meteorological phenomenon over several areas of the Earth and the monitoring of marine environments around the Korean peninsula. The operation characteristics of meteorological mission and ocean mission are described and the mission planning for the COMS is discussed. The mission operation results during the COMS IOT are analyzed through statistical approach for the study of both the mission operation capability of COMS verified during the IOT and the satellite image reception capacity achieved during the IOT.

  • The Lunar orbiter is expected to be inserted into a ~300km low Earth orbit using Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II). After the states are successfully determined with obtained tracking data, the Trans Lunar Injection(TLI) burn has to be done at appropriate epoch to send the lunar orbiter to the Moon. In this study, we describe in detail the mission scenario of the Korean lunar orbiter from the launch at NARO Space Center to lunar orbit insertion(LOI) stage following direct transfer trajectory. We investigate the launch window including launch azimuth, delta-V profile according to TLI and LOI burn positions. We also depict the visibility conditions of ground stations and solar eclipse duration to understand the characteristics of the direct transfer trajectory. This paper can be also helpful not only for overall understanding of ${\Delta}V$ trend by changing TOF and coasting time but for selecting launch epoch and control parameters to decrease fuel consumption.
