미국의 수리과학은 세계 주도적 위치에 있기는 하지만 막대한 재원의 뒷받침이 없이는 그 위치를 유지하기 어려운 실정이다. 그동안은 공산권 등에서 이민온 수학자들이 세계적 권위를 유지해 왔지만 직장도 적고 봉급도 낮을 뿐만 아니라 박사학위를 받는데도 너무 시간이 많이 걸려 대학원생들이 외면하고 있기 때문에 미국의 수리과학은 갈수록 흔들리고 있는 실정이다.

과학과 종교는 대화가 가능한가? 지난 4월 미국에서는 노벨물리학 수상자인 와인버그와 성공회 목사인 폴킹혼이 '과학과 종교간의 건설적인 대화'라는 제목으로 토론을 벌였다. 이들 두사람은 신의 존재와 사람의 선악행위 등을 토론대상으로 올려 놓았지만 신학의 권위는 계시에 있고 과학의 권위는 실험에 있기 때문에 중요한 형이상학적인 문제는 해결되지 않은 채 토론은 끝났다.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between parenting styles and childhood dental caries using a sample of 3 to 6 years old children in Korea. The subjects were 158 children aged 3 to 6 years old and their parents in Korea. The parenting styles were divided into three groups (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) using a translated version of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ). Among the 353 parents/child dyads, 158 questionnaires were returned. Authoritative parenting style was the majority (95.6%), followed by authoritarian (3.8%), and permissive (0.6%). There were no statistically significant differences between dental caries and parenting styles. The mean of dft index in authoritative group was lower than others. In the authoritative domain, the higher the authoritative tendency, the lower the dft index. Overall, authoritative parenting styles resulted in low rates of dental caries for the children. The stronger the authoritative tendency of the parents, the lower the experience of dental caries in the children. Therefore, parenting styles were likely to affect the oral health of a child, but it seemed necessary to supplement the evaluation tool to evaluate the parenting styles.

If we, as educators, want to put students at the center of learning in science classroom, we must let students express their voices and exercise authority. To do this, we developed a classroom activity about 'Making a pet poster', and then we explored how elementary school students perceived their roles and expressed their authority during this activity. Fourth grade students from an elementary school in the city of Seoul participated in the activity, which was videotaped and recorded. We found that students expressed their epistemic authority differently in small group activities and in whole group discussions. In small group activities, they desired to show their authority as "pet experts" by using and selecting various resources from their everyday lives and transforming those resources into suitable forms in public spaces. Meanwhile, in whole group discussions, participants were classified as either presenters or audience members to verify their authority in regard to the pet poster activity; presenters desired to achieve recognition as "pet experts," and audience members assessed the presenters as "testers." In addition, they expressed authority as teachers by leading the whole group discussions. Based on these findings, this paper suggests the implications for new educational strategies to foster a student-centered learning environment.

This study examines the effects of the judgment of information quality and cognitive authority on Web searching behavior. Sixteen scholars from diverse disciplines participated in the experiments, and the data were collected combining search logs, think-aloud during the searches, and post-search interviews in the laboratory setting. The results identified two distinct kinds of judgment, predictive judgment and evaluative judgment. The facets of judgment and criteria used for making Judgments of quality and authority were analyzed associated with the types of task, status of users, and discipline areas of users.

Prior researches on brand authenticity so far have focused on the scale development for measuring brand authenticity. However, at the point of time it is necessary to consider the utilization of the proposed scale in an integrative approach. Accordingly, this study aims to examine brand authenticity mediated the effect of brand authority and ethicality on purchase and word-of-mouth intention. The survey method was used for this paper, and data from a total of 136 office workers were used for the analysis. And structural equation model was used to analyze the data. The results of this empirical study is summarized as followings. First, brand authority and ethicality do not have a direct effect on purchase and word-of-mouth intention but brand authenticity mediates the effect of brand authority and ethicality. Second, brand authority and ethicality have positive effect on brand authenticity. This study provides information on the purchase and word-of-mouth intention of salary man. Further, it will provide meaning suggestion point of the importance of brand authenticity in establishing the policy of brand management.

The primary purpose of this research was to examine Korean childrens concepts of authority. Childrens judgments about commands of persons with varying age, social position, and knowledge were assessed. 48 subjects from the first, third, and fifth grades were presented with portrayals of persons giving children commands regarding two types of events: fighting and a game rule dispute. Subjects evaluated the legitimacy of commands and chose between different persons giving opposing commands. With regard to a command to stop fighting, subjects accepted the legitimacy of adult and peer authorities, as well as an adult without a position of authority. Subjects rejected commands that failed to prevent harm even when given by an adult authority. With regard to a game rule dispute, subjects most heavily weighted knowledge in evaluating the authority commands. The findings show that Korean children do not have a unitary orientation to adult authority, and have implications for an understanding of individuals' conceptions in the context of a cultural ideology emphasizing reverence for authority.

This study aims at re-considering an exemplary teacher in Confucian scholar tradition at the present time of education where teacher's authority gathers dust, the relationship between a teacher and a student is getting hard-hearted and the discussion on the role of a teacher and expertise does not reach an agreement. For this, the article discussed it by dividing an exemplary teacher into a conception of authority, benevolence and example. In view from a Confucian scholar's standpoint, this article found that teacher's authority is rational authority, and it is a product of social institution and social role of a teacher. Moreover, more important finding was that reconciliation is highlighted rather than authority. In a Confucian scholar, it is focused on love and benevolence between a teacher and a student by having humanity as the foundation and courtesy as ways and means. Also a Confucian scholar has demanded a good moral character and professional qualifications of a teacher. This study concludes that teacher's authority is made by teacher's professionalism, social roles and spirit of benevolence; also it has been making a conception of a teacher in Confucian scholar tradition. This study suggests that it needs to re-think about the values and meaning of Asian tradition in our educational settings in which western culture and values is influencing Asian societies too much.
