  • Materialism can be triggered by various social events. Based on theories on functions of materialistic goal pursuit, this study investigates how social exclusion evokes desires related to one's identity, resulting in an increase in materialism. Specifically, we predicted that social exclusion would increase the desire for control and belonging, thus leading to higher levels of materialism. Moreover, based on the theory of the approach tendency of power, we further predicted that individuals with a higher sense of power would experience greater desires for belonging and control when faced with social exclusion. To examine the hypotheses, we conducted an experiment using 202 Korean women. The results indicated that social exclusion resulted in an increase in the desire for control, thus increasing materialism. This relationship is stronger for individuals with a high sense of power, and the path from social exclusion to materialism based on the need for control is significant for those with a high sense of power. Although social exclusion increases the need to belonging, the relationship between the need to belonging and materialism is not significant, and its mediating effect was not supported in this study. Based on these findings, we discussed implications and directions for future research.

  • Power and status are core elements that distinguish social classes and strongly influence social interaction. Although they are the foundation of social influence, they have different origins (Fragale et al., 2011). While power usually is based on personal ability or legal, institutional legitimacy, status is rooted in voluntary support from other people. Hence, whereas people with power often demonstrate egoistic behavior, those with high status show relationship-based altruism (Hasty & Maner, 2020). People recognize the difference between the two and have stereotypical beliefs or expectations about the people's behavior with high power or status (Magee, 2009). The current research tested how the judgment on social exclusion, the unique social influence of power and status, changes depending on the actor's power and status. We constructed social exclusion scenarios in which we manipulated actors' power and status and asked participants to rate an actor's pain and behavioral fairness. Participants' ratings showed that the actor's fairness and pain would differ depending on the actor's power and status (Expt. 1), which is consistent with the stereotypes above. In particular, the significant effects of the actor's anonymity in the cases of low power and high status (Expts. 2A, 2B) provide further evidence for the proposal that status but not power originates from voluntary support from others.

  • What Michel Foucault has interpreted about Jeremy Bentham' Panopticon in the point of power relationship of ones's gaze is put in comparison with the characteristics shown in the modern media and mutual meanings are interpreted in the respect of a power relationship of modern gaze. Modern people communicating through media are placed in certain type of power relationship. This study analyzed the difference of it in the respect of the power of gaze in Panopticon and the consumption of information. Panopticon assumes single-network supervision, that is, one-way gaze. However, in modern media, interactive communication is possible based upon the development of information telecommunication technology. Therefore, this study aims to compare and study modern single-network supervision and multi-networks supervision based on information telecommunication technology. The development of various media such as internet, mobile phone and smart card has changed the single-network supervision system structured since modern times into the multi-network supervision system. 'Gaze-power' presented in the relationship to media enables us to discuss the problem of mutual receptiveness, the presence of various powers according to information structure and consumption power. In particular, the form provided by modern media has the complexity of mutual communication in the relationship of multi-networks, rather not assuming only one-way nature of single-network. Therefore, the approach of communication issue provided by modern media in the respect of multi-networks relationship was done by the power relationship of gaze in the respect of information communication. Gaze determines the power of watching. In addition, the visualization format aims at the power.

Service mix is the process which creates competitiveness by value creation for customers through optimal combination of physical characteristics of product and service. This research is to contribute competitiveness increase of Korean manufacture industry by study of the effect of service mix as to the business competitiveness. Usually competitiveness advantage approach relies on the industry structure competition theory and the resource-based approach. However, it is said that, while the industry structure competition theory helps finding attractive industry, it rarely helps finding which companies succeed or fail in the specific industry. The resource-based viewpoint approach is limited in that this cannot provide any theory or systematic frame for the analysis even though it has contributed a lot to the competitiveness increase. Power process approach is applied to this study in order to overcome this limit and to Increase the business competitiveness. Power process is the process to create the value, the source of power by interaction of power elements, value, needs, environment and relation, the five power determination elements. Power process is a process that creates value to satisfy the power objective for the attainment of the goals of the power subject. This study is to contribute for the manufacture industry by establishing service mix strategy from the power process viewpoint.

  • Our study investigates the impact of paternalistic leadership on organizational citizenship behavior in the Chinese context. First, we explore whether the benevolent, moral, and authoritative dimensions of paternalistic leadership positively influence organizational citizenship behavior. Second, we examine the mediating role of affective commitment. Third, we investigate whether power distance orientation and follower's age moderate the paternalistic leadership-affective commitment-organizational citizenship behavior mechanism. The results confirm the positive effects of the three sub-dimensions. We also confirm power distance orientation and follower's age moderate the effect of benevolent and moral aspects of paternalistic leadership. These underscore the importance of a dimensional analysis of paternalistic leadership. Theoretical and practical implications are also suggested.

  • This research examined whether there are differences in group decision making between senior leader groups and junior leader groups. Results revealed that senior leaders contributed more during the discussion than junior leaders, and groups with senior leaders performed better than the groups with junior leaders. In post-discussion activities group members noted that senior leaders were able to represent their groups better, and showed better leadership during discussion. On the other hand, the leader's age impacted differently depending on leader selection methods. For senior leaders, leaders randomly assigned were perceived to be more beneficial to groups. However for junior leaders, leaders systematically selected were perceived to represent their groups better and exhibit better leadership. The interaction between leader's age and leader selection seems to arise from a difference of leader's power bases.

  • Recent social studies on space have focused on changing the social relations that activate in space. In general, these studies have been based on the concept of social space on which is grounded the power-relation analysis such as power, oppression, resource allocation, and so on. Social work practice has traditionally recognized the importance of the environment surrounding human beings. Nonetheless, social work practice has tended to comprehend space in a neutral and abstract way because it has insufficiently considered modern spatial theories. For this reason, this study focusing on Lefebvre's social space theory reviewed the contemporary discourses on space in the area of social work practice. Following the review, this study attempted to establish the concept of "Space-based Social Work Practice". Specifically, this study analyzed the actual cases in social work field and explored the applicability of "SSWP". According to the results, this study delivered the implications of Space-based Social Work Practice as an alternative method and suggested the practical direction of SSWP.

  • This study has started from the political process of local community power structure to elaborate the reason why both a majority of cultural artists and cultural artist organizations want to be against establishing the local Foundation for Arts and Culture. The cultural artists and cultural artist organizations believe that the establishment of the local Foundation for Arts and Culture might threaten not only their monopolistic status or their livelihood in the local market relying on public supports, but also make them being marginalized from the potential supports. Therefore many of them have somewhat unfavourable opinions about its establishment. Drawing from the Jellabuk-do case, their concern of being isolated from the monopoly by the local Foundation for Arts and Culture are reduced to publicized discourses such as powerization, the lack of expertise, the loss of independence, and the fall of business. When constructing the Foundation for Arts and Culture, the major values are 'Pluralism' and 'Fairness'. On one hand, the terms of Fairness means that it should be fair in operations, support and executive composition. On the other hand, Pluralism means that policy-making rights should be distributed to various groups, not owned by some specific groups. Some plans for building Foundation for Arts and Culture are needed to make diverse classes and groups to expect the pluralistic interests emerged eventually.
