  • In design of sport footwear, bending stiffness of its toe part is an important factor though it can be hardly measured. This paper introduces a device for measuring the bending stiffness. The device is simply designed with aluminum frames, one AC motor, two load-cells, one encoder and control hardwares. The mechanism measuring the bending moment of a shoe is described. Then, it was used to observe how the midsole material and design of a sports shoe affect on its bending stiffness. For the experiments, various specimens prepared, where each midsole of the specimens is different in terms of material, thickness and hardness. With those specimens, experiments were performed by using the device and then the bending stiffness was computed by applying the least square curve fitting after the bending moment data were measured. The specimen with Poly-urethane(PU) midsole has the higher bending stiffness than the one with Phylon(PH) midsole, and the midsole thickness affects more on the bending stiffness than the midsole hardness. Based on those results, it can be concluded that the measurement device can provide consistent bending stiffness data to sports footwear and the bending stiffness of a footwear measured by the developed device can be used as a major parameter in the footwear design.

  • The extensional stiffness in quasi-isotropic laminates is uniform in the radial direction, but the bending stiffness varies radially due to the stacking sequence. This paper addresses the directional dependency of the bending stiffness and its radial variation in three types of quasi-isotropic laminate reflectors consisting of unidirectional fiber composite materials (UDM) and randomly distributed composite materials (short fiber, RDM). The extensional stiffness and bending stiffness in optical reflectors using RDM are uniform, while the bending stiffness in those using UDM varies radially from 11% to 26%. Also, the stiffness sensitivity, such as the bend-twist or bend-torsion effect, due to the differences in the stiffness value in the composite, is large. These factors are problematic in the optical field requiring precision surfaces. Utilizing RDM might be one way to eliminate the presence of bending stiffness in composite mirror substrates.

  • To understand the effect of midsole on the bending stiffness of footwear, bending moment is studied with various hardness and thickness of polyurethane(PU) and poly(ethyl one-co-vinylacetate)(EVA) foams which composed in footwear midsole. The initial bending moment of footwear was appeared at $19^{\circ}$ on bending angle of footwear, and this bending angle was not depend on thickness and hardness of midsole. The bending moments of footwear were also increased with increase of the hardness and thickness of misole which were composed in footwear. Increased hardness and increased thickness of foam and midsole also cause a greater bending moment of the sports shoe, respectively.

  • Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) has been widely used in operative and prosthetic fields of dentistry and its use is expanding into the orthodontic field. The purpose of this study was to examine the changes of flexural properties of FRC reinforced with silica glass fiber (FibreKor, Jeneric/Pentron Inc.. Wallingford. U.S.A.) according to the duration of water absorption. Specimens were grouped according to their shape as round and rectangular cross sections, and were immersed in distilled water at room temperature $(23^{\circ}C)$ for 0 hour 1 hour 1 week. 15 days, 1 mouth and 3 mouths. The number of specimens was 5 for each duration and bending test was done using a torque tester The flexural stiffness after 24 hour water immersion was reduced to 59% for round specimens and 25% for rectangular specimens and after 3 mouths of water immersion it was reduced to 29% and 19% stiffness of the 0 hour-specimen respectively Yield flexural moment after 24 hour water immersion was reduced to 45%for round specimens and 76% for rectangular specimens and after 3 months of water immersion it was reduced to 29% and 60% stiffness of the 0 hour-specimen respectively Ultimate flexural moment after 24 hour water immersion was reduced to 35% for round specimens and 76% for rectangular specimens and after 3 mouths of water immersion it was reduced to 25% and 37% stiffness of 0 hour-specimen respectively. Those results suggested that the flexural stiffness of FibreKor decreased greatly after initial water immersion. Consequently, further research for the maintenance of strength against water will be necessary

  • The composite lattice structures have advantages of high specific stiffness and strength and are mainly applied to the structures of launch vehicles that carry the compressive load. However, since these structures are manufactured by filament winding technology, there are some defects and voids found in the knots. For these reasons, the stiffness and strength of the lattice structures have to be compared with finite element model for predicting design load. But, the full scale test is difficult because time and space are limited and the shape of structure is complex, and hence the simple and reliable test methods for examination of stiffness are needed. In this paper, subelements of composite lattice structures were prepared and compressive and bending test were conducted for examination of stiffness of helical and hoop rib. Test methods for subelements of composite lattice structures that has curved and twisted shape were supposed and compared with finite element analysis results.

  • In this paper, the bending characteristics of the corrugated plates is analyzed. The trapezoidally, triangularlly and sinusoidally corrugated plates are considered. The corrugated plate is treated as an orthotropic plate that has different flexural properties in two perpendicular directions. The equivalent bending and twisting rigidities for the equivalent orthotropic plates are derived. The equivalent flexural rigidities are estimated under the following postulations: (1) The angle of continuously corrugated plate is not changed after the deformation. (2) When the pure bending moment is applied in corrugated direction of the plate, the its plane is in pure bending. Several numerical examples are analyzed with the proposed method and compared with published results.
