  • Recently there has been increased interest for the portal and shallow tunnel for an eco-friendly tunneling method. Semi cut & cover tunnel excavation techniques applied to concrete slab and construction and a growing number of cases, but there is no load combinations and arch concrete cross section for the applicable standards. Therefore, in this study, ground conditions and tunnel overburden thickness, thickness of backfill, overburden surface slope angle changes to a variety of conditions in order to propose standards for the semi cut & cover method was performed numerical analysis. Regression analysis method to the analysis of the results of numerical analysis, and linear regression equations derived to classify and organize a rational, economical, and safe semi cut & cover tunneling method based proposed.

  • On development of mountaneous or hilly area, stability of cut slope should be provided to prevent undesirable landslides. When piles are used as a countermeasure to stabilize existing landslide, stabilities for both piles and slope should be simultaneously satisfied to obtain the whole stability of the slope reinforced by piles. In order to confirm the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stabilization, it is necessary to investigate the behavior of the slope, in which the piles are installed. In this paper, first, the countermeasures used commonly to control unstable slope in Korea were summerized systematically. Nezt, the behavior of piles and slope soil was investigated by instrumentation installed into a cut slope for an apartment stabilized by a row of piles. Instrumentation could present sufficient effect of piles on slope stabilization Construction works in front of the row of piles affected the displacement of piles and slope. The construction works were divided into four stages, i.e. initial cutting stage of slope, excavation stages for retaining wall and parking space, and construction of retaining wall. As the result of research, the applicability of the proposed design method could be confirmed sufficiently.

  • A sonar sensor system of a new socket roughness profiling system (SRPS) which can measure the socket roughness of the large-diameter drilled shafts under the in-situ condition was developed and verified. In model tests, the salinity, temperature, and high-turbidity have been changed for simulating the in-situ borehole water conditions. From the test results, it was found that the sonar sensor can measure the distance within an accuracy of 1mm. Because of the wave form characteristics of sonar sensor, the relative error exists in case of the inclined and curved surface, however, the shape of specimen was confirmed relatively exactly using the developed sonar sensor. Moreover, the salinity, temperature, and high-turbidity did not affect the measured data of socket roughness.

  • In this study, a charging density has been differently applied to all holes to improve an excavated length per round on excavating a tunnel in quartzite mine and to prevent a dead pressure phenomena and sintering phenomena. A composition initiating system using simultaneously a direct initiating system and a indirect initiating system with 2 detonators in one hole has been introduced to cut holes. As a bottom part which is difficult to make a free face are charged with a higher charging density and a column part are charged with a lower charging density, the composition charging and initiating system which the power of explosives works effectively in the rock mass is developed. As the results, a dead pressure phenomena and a sintering phenomena being often produced in a hard rock or in a long hole could be prevented. Besides, the workability was improved by about 15% and the specific charge was reduced to about 20%, as an excavated length vs. a drilled length per round could be increased over 95%.

  • Anisotropic/heterogeneous rock mass shows various deformation behavior types due to tunnelling because deformation behavior is largely controlled by the spacial characteristics of geological factors such as faults, joints and fractured zone in rock mass. In this paper 2-dimensional numerical analysis on the several influencing factors is performed considering fractured zone located near tunnel. This numerical analysis shows that deformation behavior of tunnel are very different according to the width and the location of fractured zone and supper method. However, 3-dimensional analysis is necessary to consider 3-dimensional geometrical characteristics sufficiently since discontinuity and fractured zone have 3-dimensional geometry. Also flexible design/construction guidelines for tunnelling are required to cope with uncertain ground condition and circumstance for technically safe and economic tunnel construction.

  • In this study, the in-situ stress, strength and stress-strain characteristics with shear parameters (UU, CU, ${\bar{CU}}$) are analytically evaluated and the stability analyses are carried out under loading/unloading conditions. The in-situ stress and the stress-strain behaviour may become different according to input shear parameters in finite element analyses with construction step, Especially, if the internal friction angle in Mohr-Coulomb model is set to zero, the in-situ stress and the stress-strain behaviour might not be properly predicted. The results from CU parameter of total stress analysis have no significant difference with the results from CU of effective stress analysis. Therefore, in the numerical analysis for soft ground, CU parameters can be applied to predict in-situ stress and stress-strain behaviors. In addition, the calculation method was proposed to determine the shear parameter of Mohr-Coulomb model, which is corresponding to the shear strength equivalent to that of in-situ soil.

  • Various TBM performance prediction models have been developed and most of them were considered penetration rate only. Despite the fact that some models have suggested equations and charts for estimating the utilization factor, but there are a few studies to estimate the TBM utilization factor. Utilization factor is affected by the type of TBM machine, operation, maintenance of machine, geological conditions, contractor experience and other factors. In this study, more than 100 case studies are analyzed to determine the relationship between the utilization factor and RMR, geological conditions, TBM types, tunnel length, and TBM diameter. Simple and multiple linear regression analysis are performed to develop predictive models for the utilization factor. The predictive model with explanatory variables of geological conditions, TBM types, tunnel length, and TBM diameter does not give a good correlation. The predictive models with explanatory variable of RMR give higher values of the coefficient of determination.

  • The construction of shield tunnels is being expanded from the small-bore tunnels such as power, telecommunications, water supply, and sewerage pipes to the large bore tunnels such as road and railway tunnels with the advancement of the shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) manufacturing technology. Accordingly, the construction of twin shield tunnels is increasing. Peck (1969) reported that the surface settlement trough is well described by a Gaussian distribution on a single shield tunnel. Hereafter, many studies about the surface settlement trough were performed by the field measurement, laboratory model test, and numerical analysis. This study confirmed that the additional surface settlement trough induced by the 2nd tunneling were well described by using each Gaussian curve for the right and left sides of the settlement trough.

  • Two-row overlap pile wall, currently under development for use in deep excavations, is a novel retaining structure designed to perform itself as a cutoff wall as well as a high-stiffness wall by constructing four overlapping piles arranged in zigzag manner at a time using a tetra-axis auger. This wall has a relatively complex cross-section, compared with other types of pile wall, which would make it difficult to determine design parameters related to cross-section. In this study, a flexural rigidity equation has been derived by analyzing both theoretically and statistically various wall cross-sections with different pile diameters and overlap lengths. The flexural rigidity equation was found to show the maximum error rate of 3%.

  • Oil extraction from oil sands, a non-traditional crude oil resource, is attracting attention as the oil price fluctuates due to recent economical and political issues. Many oil sands sites are mainly located in the polar regions. For plant construction to extract crude oil from oil sands in harsh environment of the polar regions, fast and simple installation of plant foundation is necessary. However, typically-used conventional foundations such as drilled shafts and driven piles are not suitable to construct under cold temperature and organic surface layers. In this study, helical piles enabling rapid and simple constructions using small rotary equipment without driving or excavation was considered. The helical pile consists of steel shaft and several helices attached to the steel shaft; therefore, the behavior of the helical pile depends on the number and shape of the helices. The effect of the helices' configuration (number and diameter of helices) on helical pile behavior was analyzed based on the numerical analysis results.
