  • Kunsan port based on the selection of Kunsan Free Trade Area is expected to develop into a regional beach-head port and foreign investment area, and as the result it will play a great role in accelerating the coming age of the west sea. To promote the foreign competitiveness of Kunsan port as a central container port it can be pointed out that 1) to raise up the utilization ratio of Kunsan port as the front base of export and import by multinational corporations, 2) to hustle up the development of Kunsan container port toplay the central role as the composite container linkage central port, 3) to strengthen the attraction activities of foreign investment into the Kunsan Free Trade Area for the balanced development between regions in nation, 4) the support of both central and local governments to accelerate the comingage of the west sea are necessary.

The Comparative Study on the Efficiency of Kunsan Port (군산항만의 효율성 비교연구)

  • By using data envelopment analysis(DEA) this research measures the efficiency of Korea's seven middle-sized seaports and their Malmquist productivity from 1998 to 2007. Under the assumption of CRS(constant returns to scale) and VRS(variable returns to scale), seaports' ranking of efficiency are measured. Kunsan Port is confirmed as a middle-performed port in the various measurements. Important finding facts are as follows. 1)Kunsan Port has the efficiency level from 53% to 57% of efficient ports' level under the assumption of CRS and VRS. 2)In terms of average efficiency level, the gap among these 7 seports' efficiency levels has been widened during the period from 1998 to 2007. 3)Kunsan Port has shown the characteristics of DRS more frequently in terms of returns to scale. 4) Kunsan Port's average total factor productivity has been lower at the rate of 0.7% during the period from 1998 to 2007. 5)Kunsan Port has shown technical progress at the rate of 3.1% in this period. In future research the more and better data will be expected to improve the understanding of Korean seaports' efficiency characteristics.

  • To induce container cargos to Gunsan port, we should struggle on securing the quantity of goods transported from the competitive Jeonbuk and Chungcheong areas by reducing transportation expenses by land, and make an activating plan for the international exchange between Gunsan port and nearby ports in China. As a result, if the plan to induce container cargos to Gunsan port is activated, the regular liners will stop at Gusan port. So the new sea route will be opened so that consignors can ship cargos in the proper time. The consignors will use Gunsan port frequently because of the reduction of distribution expenses. To do so, for the first, many incentives should be implemented to attract container cargos. In addition, various facilities should be fully equipped and improved. This paper is to improve the problems for which consignors, the shipping lines and forwarders may feel uncomfortable when they use Gunsan port. According to the research on the actual condition, the biggest problem in Gunsan port is the depth of water. The management, relation system, infrastructure and information system of Gunsan port are also insufficient. Therefore, this paper will make an alternative plan to improve these problems and help the container cargos induce to Gunsan port.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the logistics strategies for the improvement Gunsan port's competitiveness. To accomplish the purpose, this paper reviews the concept & function of logistics firstly. Next we find out the main factors of improving port's competitiveness, build the basic model of the logistics strategy and apply the model to the case of Gunsan port. The strategies to improve the competitiveness of Gunsan port are as follows ; (1) Construction of logistics environment (2) Planning the port marketing for the extension a logistic market share (3) Construction of logistics chain and finally (4) Construction of logistics community.

  • The establishment of the WTO system means that the global age of trade has officially arrived. Since the integration of the world economy brings about the free movement of goods and services between nations, it is inevitable that sea-bound freight will continue to increase. A recent World Bank report says that China and Korea will be the first and seventh largest economic Powers, respectively, by the year 2020. In particular, the Korea peninsula has a geo-political advantage in being developed as a major Northeast Asian container center. Moreover China's swift uprising needs new order of trade for economy belt in Northeast Asia. Therefore, it can be said that Kunsan Port. which has already been designated as a free trade zone, has greater potential to rise as a regional beach-head port and main region for foreign investment. As such. Kunsan Port will play a major role in accelerating the emergence of the West Sea in international trade. There are several strategies for developing Kunsan Port into a central container port: 1) develop Kunsan port Into an import/export front base f3r multinational corporations, 2) develop Kunsan container port into the core composite container-linked central port, 3) attract foreign investment to the Kunsan Free Trade Area so as to promote balanced development among the regions of Korea, 4) support the central government and local governments to accelerate the coming of the "West Sea Era." These recommendations call for urgent implementation.

A Study on the Prospect of Attracting Container Cargos for Import and Export into Gunsan Port (군산항 유치가능 수출입 컨테이너화물 추정 연구)

  • Container cargos for import and export of Jeollabukdo are handled at Gunsan port, which just hold 6.60% of the total amount 264,120 TEU. The rest of them, reaching 94.40%, are handled at Gwangyang port(55.90%), Busan port(34.15%) and other(4.45%). Container cargos for import and export handled at Gunsan port are 31,715 TEU that hold only 0.20% of all cargos in Korea. On the other hand, container cargos for import and export handled at Shanghai and Qingdao port are 26,912 TEU which hold 80.15% of the total handling container cargos at Gunsan port. If 50% of container cargos produced in Jeollabukdo are handled at Gunsan port, the total handling container cargos will be 130,000 TEU. And if the container cargos reaching 1,947,069 TEU which are using other ports can be attracted to Gunsan port, it is expected that around 190,000 TEU will be increased in the quantity of goods. The total container cargos of Shanghai and Qingdao port not handled by the nearest ports are 383,184 TEU. If Jeollabukdo attract around 10% of those cargos into Gunsan port, about 38,000 TEU container cargos will be handled at Gunsan port.

Variation of Monsoon in Western Korea (우리나라 서해안의 계절풍 변화)

  • 겨울철에 우리나라 서해 및 서해안은 북서계절풍이 지배적이다. 지속성이 강한 계절풍은 선박의 안전운항과 기상재해에 큰 영향을 미친다. 이 연구에서는 30년간(1981-2010년)의 장기간의 데이터를 이용하여 우리나라 서해안에 있어서의 겨울철 계절풍의 변화를 분석하였다. 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 우리나라 서해안의 인천, 군산 및 목포에 있어서의 풍속은 12월, 1월 그리고 2월에 공통적으로 시간의 흐름과 함께 약해지는 경향을 보인다. 풍속이 약해지는 정도는 특히 군산에서 크고 인천과 목포에서는 서로 비슷하다. 우리나라 남해안에 위치하는 통영의 경우는 시간의 흐름과 함께 오히려 풍속에 강해지는 변화 특성을 보여 서해안의 계절풍 변화와는 큰 차이를 보인다. 인천, 군산 및 목포 중에서 풍속이 가장 강한 곳은 목포이고, 그 다음은 군산, 인천의 순이다. 우리나라 서해안의 계절풍이 약해지는 것은 겨울철의 전형적인 서고동저형 기압배치의 변화 등에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

Contaminant Assessment of Dredged Material by Leaching Test - focused on the impact assessment of the coastal environment - (용출시험에 의한 항만 준설토의 오염도 평가 -해양환경에 미치는 영향평가를 중심으로-)

  • The physical characteristics and contaminant level of the dredged material generated by the channel maintenance and water quality improvement was analysed in a series of the study of the beneficial uses of dredged material in harbor. Dredged materials were sampled at Kunsan, Kohyun, Samchunpo, and Pohang Harbors and tested in the laboratory(leaching Test). From the experimental results, the specific gravity does not shows large differences, while almost grains are composed of silts and oyster shells except Pohang harbor containing gravels. The COD release rate and ignition loss is high in Kunsan dredged materials because of the watershed pollutants loads. The nutrient release rate is also relatively high. The release concentration of the heavy metals shows the highest values on Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu constituents at Kohyun, Kunsan, Samchunpo, Kunsan, respectively.

A Study on the Activating Schemes of Kunsan Port As the Logistics Base of the Central Region in Korea (중부권 물류기지 군산항 활성화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • This thesis aims to contribute to upgrading its position to the biggest 8 ports in Korea by suggesting activating schemes of Kunsan Port in rapidly changing shipping environments. The research methodologies such as literature survey, O/D analysis are adopted in the study. The following several conclusions can be suggested. Firstly, in port logistics system the dredging in navigational channels and in Kumgang Dam and the incentive schemes for the shipping companies and the international freight forwarders are required. Secondly cargo inducement schemes should be introduced to induce container cargoes originated in Junbook Do Province and adjacent area etc. Thirdly the development of new shipping routes and strengthening the coastal routes among domestic sea ports. Fouthly establishing supply chain management system with adjacent Chinese Provinces such as Shandong.
