  • We present the first analysis of moor vegetation on the Moojechi of Ulsan including syntaxonomy and syndynamics. We classified plant communities according to the Braun-Blanquet approach. In order to better understand ecological alteration processes and changing species compositions along successional gradients we also examined synecological differences using Principal Coordinate Analysis(PCoA) in terms of moisture gradient, species richness, and community structure. Classification resulted in one association and five plant communities occupying distinct moor habitats: Hypericum laxum-Eleocharis acicularis for. longiseta community, Drosera rotundifolia-Eleocharis congesta community, Platanthero-Molinietum japonicae ass. nova hoc loco, Molinia japonica-Alnus japonica community, Miscanthus sinensis-Pinus densiflora community, and Convallaria keiskei-Quercus serrata community. Due to synecological correspondences and floristic similarities in supraregional perspective, Platanthero-Molinietum can be assigned to existing higher syntaxonomic units of Molinion and Molinietalia in Braun-Blanquet system, established in Japan. We propose to extend their range and designate the new class Molinietea japonicae representative to the intermediate moor (Zwischenmoor) vegetation in Northeast Asia. PCoA resulted in four types showing a sequencess of succession: Needle spike-rush type, moor-grass type (incl. alder forest type), eulalia type, and oak forest type. A combination of edaphic conditions (soil eutrphication and soil moisture) and hydrologic patterns of moor ecosystem related to topography, occurring as result of external geophysical forces, controls inter alia spatial patterns and floristic compositions of moor plant communities.

  • Vegetation established through the natural process, such as Quercus mongolica, Pinus densiflora, Q. variabilis, Q. acutissima, Carpinus laxiflora, Q. aliena and Q. serrata communities and artificially introduced vegetation, which are composed of Larix leptolepis and P. rigida plantations, are established in the mountainous land of the Mt. Songnisan National Park. On the other hand, the developed lands, which are consisted of agricultural folds, residential areas, commercial areas related to tourism, etc. appear in the lowland around streams. Based on the spatial distribution of vegetation, the southern district, which is attributed to Naesongni-myun by administrative system, showed higher natural degree and vegetation diversity. However, most of the other districts, which are attributed to Cheongcheon- and Chilseong-myuns, are covered with the Korean red pine forest, a product of artificial influence, and plantation also occupied higher percentage. Thereby both vegetation diversity and natural degree are lowering. A result of ordination by DCA showed that sands tended to be arranged by depending on the topographic condition. Species diversity of plant communities was higher in broad-leaved stands rather than in coniferous ones and in stands of the early stage than in ones of the late stage. The result of analysis on vegetation dynamics implied that vegetation of this region would be dominated by Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora communities in the future. However, considered occurrence the of disturbance and response of vegetation on that, this estimation may different somewhat from an actual situation. Conservation strategies of the Mt. Songnisan National Park were discussed in viewpoints of landscape ecology, and conservation of major plant communities and biodiversity.

  • We studied primary production, nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in a salt marsh of Okryutung at Nakdong River estuary. The standing biomass in Phragmites longivalvis, Carex scabrifolia and Zoysia sinica stand was $5.48kg/\textrm{m}^2,{\;}1.94kg/\textrm{m}^2{\;}and{\;}1.95kg/\textrm{m}^2$, respectively. The peak above-ground biomass in each stand was $1.99kg/\textrm{m}^2,{\;}0.74kg/\textrm{m}^2{\;}and{\;}1.03kg/\textrm{m}^2$, respectively. Soil nitrogen decreased from the onset of growing seson till July, and then increased. Seasonal patterns of soil phosphorus were different from stand to stand. Nitrogen concentrations of above-ground plant tissus were quite different among the plant species at the very beginning of the growing season, however, they became similar as the plants grow. Seasonal pattern of phosphrous in C. scabrifolia roots was quite different from those other two species. Nitrogen absorbed by plants during season in P. longivalvis, C. scabrifolia and Z. sinicia stand was 224kg/ha, 111kg/ha, 156kg/ha, respectively. Phosphorus taken up by plants was 22kg/ha, 29kg/ha and 21kg/ha, respectively. Because the vascular plants growing at salt marshes can immobilize large quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus, salt marsh vegetation can be sued for preventing the pollution of coastal sea water.

  • A comparative analysis on the Viticetea rotundifoliae (coastal dune shrub vegetation) in South Korea and Japan was carried out. 569 releves from the most typical and homogeneous stands of the coastal dunes in South Korea and Japan were used. This study was accomplished by using the syntaxa and hierarchical system of the Viticetea rotundifoliae in South Korea and Japan according to the Zurich-Montpellier School's method, and syntaxonomy, synecology, syndynamics and syngeography between two countries were also compared with. Coastal dune shrub vegetation in South Korea and Japan were defined to the Viticetea rotundifoliae representing southern type coastal shrub in Northeast Asia. Coastal dune shrub communities of the Viticetea rotundifoliae in South Korea and Japan are considerably corresponded between the two, and contain their own characteristic syntaxa. Coastal dune shrub communities of the Viticetea rotundifoliae in Japan showed much diversification in syntaxa and species composition than those in South Korea.

  • This study emphasizes syntaxonomy and syndynamics of intermediate (Zwischen) moor (area: 14,000 $m^2$) at Mt. Shinbul in Yangsan, southeastern Korean Peninsula. A total of 105 vascular plant species including 26 monitor-species were recorded. Analysis by the $Z\"{u}rich$-Montpellier School's method distinguished eight vegetation units: Eleocharitis-Blyxetum echinospermae ass. nov., Eriocaulon sikokianum-Utricularia racemosa community, Eleocharis wichurai-Molinia japonica community, Platanthero-Molinietum japonicas, Miscanthus sinensis for. purpurascens community, Tripterygium regelii community, Symplocos chinensis-Quercus mongolica community, Symplocos chinensis-Quercus dentata community. PCoA (Principal Coordinates Analysis) shows that vegetation changes and distributional aspects are associated with both moisture condition and sunlight on the ground layer and soil nutrient level (mesotrophic to oligotrophic). Most important to Molinietea japonicas being representative intermediate moor vegetation at the southeasternmost fringe of the Korean Peninsula is the local cooling effect by mountainous cloud and mist zone resulting in shorter and wetter growing season. The Yangsan moor vegetation was compared with earlier descriptions of related Mujechi moor from anthropogenic and natural moor vegetations.
