  • Concrete-filled steel tube columns are expected to have confined effects of the steel on the concrete and reinforced local buckling effects of the concrete. After comparing the results of existing studies with the experimental results from this study, the stress-strain relations were modified by evaluating the load-displacement with consideration of the confined effects. The effects of the parameters on the load-displacement and moment-curvature relationship according to the sectional and material properties were analyzed.

  • Traditional displacmir~nt measurement included an extrancous and cvrntlc. portmn due to test setup and support crushing. The magnitudc of this erroneous deformation was found to be of the same order as the actual displacement, leading to inaccurate determinations of fracture parameters. To overcome this problem, the load-CMOD relationship is a more reliable parameter for determining the fracture characteristics because it is unaffected by the specimen setup and any support crushing. An important step towards the use of load-(:MOD concept as a key fracture parameter depends on relating the CMODto the traditional load-line deflection. This investigation found that there was an unique linear relationship between the CMOD and the load-line deflection. The exact numeric value of relationship between the CMOD and the deflection. that is, the slope ofthe line, is discovered to be a material property. The relationship finds a problem with the existing IZIL,EM recommendations for. measuring the fracture energy of concrete. A proposal to correct the problem is made.

  • Concrete filled steel tube and concrete encased steel tube columns are expected to have confined effects of concrete by steel and reinforced effects of local buckling by concrete. On the basis of confined state concrete models of previous researches, stress-strain and load-displacement relations of RC, CFT and CET columns are analyzed by steel ratio. After comparing analysis results with experimental results, Modified stress-strain relations are derived through evaluation the influence upon confined effects of concrete in each cases. Also, the modified stress-strain models are carried out to be compared with specified strength of various countries.

  • Finite element analyses were performed to find out the load bearing behavior of three kinds of shallow foundations. The analysis results for strip footing showed that local shear failure mode could be observed for a zero dilatancy angle and general shear failure mode could be seen for non-zero dilatancy angles. The ultimate bearing loads for non-zero dilatancy angles were approximately 1.5 times higher than that of a zero dilatancy angle. General shear failure mode was observed for circular footing and square footing regardless of the dilatancy angle. The ultimate bearing loads for a non-zero dilatancy angle were slightly greater than that for a zero dilatancy angle. A comparison of the load-settlement curves for three kinds of footing showed that the load bearing capacities for non-zero dilatancy angle were greater than those for a zero-dilatancy angle.

  • In this study, Matsuda formula used to evaluate the loads acting on the pillar was investigated and load reduction factor(${\alpha}$) was evaluated by numerical analysis to better apply for the design. From the results, normal stress was concentrated to one side due to excavation of preceding tunnel after construction of pillar. And 86.5% of maximum normal stress was revealed partly unequally when the ground was poor. By numerical analysis, $14{\sim}83%$ of total loads calculated by Matsuda formula decreased and then, from these results, load reduction factor(${\alpha}$) was estimated. From now on, stability and economic aspects could be guaranteed by applying the load reduction factor(${\alpha}$).

  • The behavior of the connection for beam-to-column weak axis connection and its details should be identified. Thus, each element is considered a panel zone, and the horizontal stiffener's presence or absence and position in bracket-type welding connection are used as variables to compare the behavior of strong axis connection and weak axis connection. In this study, the strength of connection is calculated by substituting the simple beam-strengthened vertical stiffeners for connection in the presence of horizontal stiffeners. In the absence of horizontal stiffeners, the strength of connection can be calculated using local flange bending strength considering local web yielding strength, web crippling, and web buckling strength. The results of the theoretical analysis and experiments are compared.

  • In this paper, the formulation of a new simplified finite element is made to analyze the ultimate strength of damaged tubular members subjected to combined axial force and end moment. A damaged tubular member that has the bending deformation and the local dent is modeled by beam elements. Tangent elastic stiffness matrix of a beam element which contains the effect of the geometric nonlinearity is derived by using the updated Lagrangian approach. Here the contribution of the stiffness in the dented area is neglected since its resistance against the external loads is considered to be small. A fully plastic interaction curve of the element under combined loads taking account of the local dent effect is selected as a yielding criterion at each nodal point. Also tangent elasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is formulated by plastic node method. Comparison with the present solution and the existing experimental results is made showing that the present method gives quite an accurate solution.

  • In solid mechanics, the peridynamics theory has provided a suitable framework for material failure and damage propagation simulation. Peridynamics is computationally expensive since it is required to solve enormous nonlocal interactions based upon integro-differential equations. Thus, multiscale coupling methods with other local models are of interest for efficient and accurate implementations of peridynamics. In this study, peridynamic models are restricted to regions where discontinuities or stress concentrations are present. In the domains characterized by smooth displacements, classical local models can be employed. We introduce a recently developed blending scheme to concurrently couple bond-based peridynamic models and the Navier equation of classical elasticity. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed blended model is suitable for point loads and static fracture, suggesting an alternative framework for cases where peridynamic models are too expensive, while classical local models are not accurate enough.
