Laser beam is directional and small in divergence angle so that it is well qualified to deliver high intensity infrared energy into a coming MANPADS threat for aircraft survivability. The threat will be deceived and loose tracking of a target when it is exposed to the laser beam modulated relevant to the track mechanism of the threat. The laser beam goes through scattering inside the seeker of the threat and reach the detector in a stray light form, which is a critical phenomenon enabling jamming of the seeker. The mechanism of the laser beam based jamming against a pulse modulated infrared seeker is shown. Simulations are carried out to support the understanding of how the jam technique works.
This paper proposes a new feature extraction method for automatically estimating the number of target and detecting the chaff using high range resolution profile(HRRP). Feature of one-dimensional range profile is expected to be limited or missing due to lack of information according to the time. The proposed method considers the dynamic movements of targets depending on the radial velocity. The observed HRRP sequence is used to construct a time-range distribution matrix, then assuming diverse radial velocities reflect the number of target and seduction chaff launch, the proposed method utilizes the characteristic of the gradient distribution on the time-range distribution matrix image, which is validated by electromagnetic computation data and dynamic simulation.
This study analyzed upper-air temperatures in order to make temperature conditions for weapon system operating in Korean Peninsula. One of important tasks of environmental analysis is to set-up suitable temperature conditions for successful development of weapon system. Many weapon system developers are setting air temperature conditions based on the MIL-STD-810G. However, for weapons systems that are used only in the upper-air of the Korean Peninsula, the air temperature conditions recommended by MIL-STD-810G are often not suitable. To establish the air temperature conditions for upper-air in the Korean Peninsula, the method of Percentage of Occurrence should has be built up as method of temperature analysis. Upper-air climate data of the Korea Peninsulas over the past decade is also analyzed based on this method. The study suggest upper-air temperature conditions for weapons systems that are operated only in the Korean peninsula.
This paper describes about the circuit design and test of the electronic Arm Fire Device. Electronic arm fire device consists of igniter, circuit and housing case and it operates without the actuator such as torque motor or solenoid. A high-voltage DC-DC converter was used to generate the voltage for initiating the LEEFI(Low Energy Exploding Foil Initiator). The MEMS switch was used to detect the acceleration that occurs when missile is launched, and the circuit was designed considering the size, performance, and specification of the electronic devices. The performance test was conducted to verify the designed circuit and we confirmed that it operates well.
Accurate aerodynamic characterization of projectile is crucial for successful development of munition. The aerodynamic characterization of fin stabilized projectile is more difficult than characterization of traditional symmetric ballistic projectile. Instrumented free flight experiments were conducted to quantify rolling behavior of fin stabilized projectile. The instrumented projectiles were launched from a rifled tube and the onboard sensor data were acquired through a telemetry transmitter. Roll rate was measured for fin stabilized projectile by means of an angular rate sensor. And, roll damping coefficients were estimated from onboard sensor data acquired during gun firing and trajectory analysis of mathematical model.
During the assembly and function inspection of missile system, flight simulation process is required. In the conventional flight simulation check of missiles, an inertial navigation system simulator was used to transmit the navigation output data acquired in HILS. There are several disadvantages in terms of check configuration complexity and data synchronization when using the simulator. So we proposed a new flight simulation method that utilizes the nonvolatile built-in memory of the aviation control unit. The data processing procedure and operation procedure of the proposed method for type I and type II missiles are presented. And we analyzed the causes of the difference between proposed method result and the HILS result for type II missile. By comparing the results obtained by the experiments using the proposed method with the results of HILS, the validity of proposed method was confirmed.
This paper describes the quality attributes of an integrated simulation software for weapon systems named Advanced distributed simulation environment(AddSIM). AddSIM is developed as a key enabler for Defense Modeling & Simulation(M&S) systems which simulate battlefields and used for battle experiments, analyses, military exercises, training, etc. AddSIM shall provide a standard simulation framework of the next Defense M&S systems. Therefore AddSIM shall satisfy not only functional but also quality requirements such as availability, modifiability, performance, testability, usability, and others. AddSIM consists of operating softwares of hierarchical components including graphical user interface, simulation engines, and support services(natural environment model, math utility, etc.), and separated weapon system models executable on the operating softwares. The relation between software architectures and their quality attributes are summarized from previous works. And the AddSIM architecture and its achievements in the aspect of quality attributes are reviewed.
The multi-channel video streaming system is an essential device for future ground combat vehicles. For the system, the application of digital interfaces is required instead of the direct analog method to support selectable multiple channels. However, due to the characteristics of the digital interfaces that require en/decoding and signal conversion, the system should support the ability to adapt to quality and delay requirements depending on how video data is utilized. To support addressed issue, this study designs and emulates the multi-channel compressed-video streaming system of ground combat vehicle's fire control system based on commercial standards. Using the system, this study analyzes the quality of video according to the rotational speed of the acquisition device and Glass-to-Glass (G2G) delay between video acquisition and display devices according to video compression rates. Through these experiments and analysis, this paper presents the design direction of the system having scalability on the latest technology while providing high-quality video data streaming flexibly.
In electronic warfare, beamforming using multiple antennas is applied for effective transmission of electronic attack signals. In order to perform an electronic attack against multiple threats using the same frequency resource, it is necessary to apply a multi-beam transmission algorithm that has been studied in wireless communication systems. For electronic attacks against multiple threats, this paper presents an MMSE(Minimum Mean-Squared Error) beam-forming technique based on the prior location information of threats and an optimization method for power allocation. In addition, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated and received signals of multiple threats are compared and analyzed.
Naval surface ships and submarines could be exposed to non-contact underwater explosion(UNDEX) environment. Equipment installed on the ships and submarines could be damaged by shock load generated by UNDEX environment. Therefore, shock survivability of equipment generally evaluated by shock tests. Ground based shock test machine such as Light weight shock test machine(LVSM) is developed to simulate shock load caused by UNDEX environment. In this study, linear dynamic model of LVSM is proposed and evaluated to improve shock test design procedure. Parameters of the model are decided by optimizing time domain response compared to zero payload experiment. Proposed model is verified by comparing simulation results and test results of maximum payload experiment. Finally, shock test design using the model is described for various test equipment weight.
