Evaluation of Biohydrogen Production Using Various Inoculum Sources (다양한 접종원을 이용한 바이오수소 생산 평가)

  • In this study we evaluated biohydrogen production potential as operational parameters (substrate, salt concentration, and temperature) using eight inoculum sources. While the volumetric biohydrogen production rate was significantly affected by temperature and inoculum sources, substrate and salt concentration did not have a significant effect on the biohydrogen production. Mesophilic temperature (37℃) was also found more appropriate for the hydrogen production than thermophilic temperature (50℃). Rate, while the eight inoculum sources, anaerobic digestion sludge exhibited the fastest biohydrogen production. The maximum production rate from anaerobic digestion sludge was 2,729 and 1,385 ml-H2·l-1·d-1 at mesophilic and thermophilic temperature, respectively.

A New Record of the Family Ophichthidae (Pisces), Ophichthus erabo (Jordan and Snyder 1901), from Korea (한국산 바다뱀과(Ophichthidae) 어류 1미기록종, Ophichthus erabo(Jordan and Snyder, 1901))

  • We report the first occurrence of Ophichthus erabo (Jordan and Snyder, 1901) collected in the waters around Jeju Island. The morphologic characteristics of this species include rich brown semicircular spots distributed on the head, the back, and the dorsal fins. Ophichthus erabo has a similar body color to Ophichthus polyophthalmus but can be clearly distinguished from the latter by the number of vertebrae (152-155 in O. erabo vs. 147-149 in O. polyophthalmus) and the existence of a white spot at the center of a semicircle (i.e., no white spot in O. erabo vs. a white spot in O. polyophthalmus). We suggest a new Korean name for O. erabo to be "Mul-bang-ul-ba-da-baem-gang-eo".

First Record of the Smoothtail Mobula, Mobula thurstoni (Myliobatiformes: Myliobatidae) in Southern Korea (한국 여수에서 채집된 매가오리과 (Myliobatidae) 어류 첫기록종, Mobula thurstoni)

  • Two specimens (1770~1850 mm disc width) of Mobula thurstoni, belonging to the family Myliobatidae, order Myliobatiformes, were first collected from the central coast of the Southern Sea of Korea in September 2018. This species is characterized by an anterior margin of disc with double curvature, a white-tipped dorsal fin, and the absence of a caudal spine. This species is morphologically similar to Mobula kuhlii, but has an anterior margin of pectoral fins with a double curvature and the dorsal coloration is bluish black rather than white. In addition, M. thurstoni was well distinguished from M. kuhlii as determined by mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences with genetic distances ranging from 0.030 to 0.069. The Korean name 'Mae-kkeun-kko-li-jwi-ga-o-li' is proposed for the species M. thurstoni.

In vitro Antimicrobial Activities of Edible Seaweeds Extracts Against Cutibacterium acnes (여드름균(Cutibacterium acnes)에 대한 해조류 추출물의 항균효과)

  • The study was aimed at developing an alternative therapeutic agent against acne vulgaris, one of the most common skin diseases, to meet the continuing demand for new therapies. Acne vulgaris is often associated with the acne-causing bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes. To investigate the safety of agents against acne vulgaris, we evaluated the potential antibacterial activities of edible seaweeds against C. acnes in Korea. Forty-one edible seaweeds, including the brown, green, and red varieties, were selected for the antibacterial test. In comparison with other seaweeds, 70% ethanolic extracts of brown seaweeds, such as Cladophora wrightiana var. minor, Eisenia bicyclis, Ecklonia cava, Ishige foliacea, Ishige okamurae, Sargassum filicinum, and Sargassum miyabei Yendo, exhibited potential antibacterial activity against C. acnes with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging between 64 and 128 ㎍/mL. To investigate the active anti-acne agents and to enhance our understanding of the antibacterial activities against C. acnes, further solvent-fractionation experiments are warranted. The findings imply that brown seaweeds can be a potential source of natural agents against acne vulgaris.

Draft genome sequence of a marine Flavobacteria Flagellimonas eckloniae DOKDO 007T (해양 Flavobacteria Flagellimonas eckloniae DOKDO 007T 의 유전체 염기서열 해독)

  • Flagellimonas eckloniae DOKDO $007^T$, isolated from the rhizosphere of the marine algae Ecklonia kurome collected from Dokdo Island, South Korea, is a marine Flavobacteria belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae. The genome consists of 4,132,279 bp, 3,527 coding sequences with 37.85% G + C contents and two contigs in one scaffold chromosome. This strain contains a gene encoding proteorhodopsin, as well as other retinal biosynthesis genes, allowing it to utilize sunlight as an energy source. The strain contained only few segment of flagellar constructing gene cluster and this is not consistent with genus name Flagellimonas, therefore, revision of the genus name is required.

Screening of cryoprotectants (CPAs) for cryopreservation in the Nitzschia sp. of marine microalgae (해양 규조류 Nitzschia sp.의 초저온동결보존을 위한 보존제의 영향 분석)

  • Biodiversity has continued to degrade in the $21^{st}$ century due to global warming occasioned by destruction of the environment around the world.. The Nagoya protocol places Korea in a unique position to effectively develop and protect its domestic genetic resources. Microalgae under study in this research contains large amount of antioxidant substances such as beta carotene and astaxanthin, that can be used as biological resource owing to the large amounts of biomass that can be secured through photosynthesis. However, it is difficult to preserve it since cryopreservation method used for long-term preservation is yet to be developed. A basic study for long term cryopreservation was carried out on Nizschia frustulum and Nitzschia amabilis which belong to marine diatoms. As cryoprotectants (CPAs), glycerol, DMSO, and methanol which penetrate into cells were prepared at 5%, 10%, and 15% concentrations each, in case of methanol, it was tested at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 12% by its nature. Two kinds of microalgae, N. frustulum and N. amabilis, were diluted with $10^2$, $10^3$ and $10^4cells\;ml^{-1}$, respectively. The highest survival rate was shown at12% concentration of methanol, and the figures were $6.94{\pm}0.31%$ in N. frustulum and $8.85{\pm}0.16%$ in N. amabilis. As a result of 3 weeks cultivation of thawed microalgae after freezing, the result is shows that N. frustulum increased about 10 times faster and N. amabilis increased about 12 times the original concentration.

  • The genus Tineola Herrich-Schäffer is reported for the first time in Korea, with a species Tineola bisselliella (Hummel, 1823). These moths can cause damage not only on irreplaceable materials of aesthetic, historic or scientific importance, but also on daily commodities such as clothes, furnishings, and other materials made of animal fur, wool, feathers or leathers. The morphological characters of T. bisselliella are described, and illustrations of examined specimens are provided.
