While science museums, whose functions consist traditionally in collecting, preserving, researching, and displaying science-related objects, present scientific knowledge, figures, or tools in the historical context, science centers give more emphases on science education by exposing interactive exhibits to their visitors. However, neither objects-oriented exhibits nor hands-on technologies can provide museum visitors with the full insight into modem science in terms of its complicated relationships to politics, economy, culture, art, risk, and environment. This paper argues that for the 21st century we need to establish a new kind of science museum through the critical examination of its previous kinds - science museums and science centers. In the first part of this paper, the history of the first and second generations of science museums, including their recent trends in science centers, in the West will be elaborated. Secondly, the development of national science museums in Korea will be discussed specifically for the understanding of Korean science museums. The next part of this paper will seek for the possibilities of the third generation of science museums through three examples, which show interdisciplinary, contextual, and institutional approaches to change science museums or science centers. Fourthly, the social function of science museums as 'forum' will be discussed in relation to promoting public 'participation' of science as well as public 'understanding' of science. As a conclusion, some practical suggestions and conceptual guidelines will be proposed for the future Korean national science museum.

영국(英國)에서는 대학도서관(大學圖書館), 공공도서관(公共圖書館) 및 특수도서관(特殊圖書館)을 포함하여 각종(各種)의 도서관(圖書館)이 많이 있다. 그러나 불과 몇 달전까지만 해도 국가도서관제도(國家圖書館制度)가 없었다는 것은 경이(驚異)할만한 일이며, 세계적(世界的)으로 유명(有名)한 영국박물관도서관(英國博物館圖書館)도 공식적(公式的)인 국가도서관(國家圖書館)이 아니었기 때문이다. 1972년(年)에 새로운 입법(立法)이 통과되어, 소위 "영국도서관(英國圖書館)"이라 불리우는 국립도서관(國立圖書館)이 현재(現在) 건립중(建立中)에 있는데, 이것은 영국박물관도서관(英國博物館圖書館)(British Museum Library), 국립과학발명참고도서관(國立科學發明參考圖書館)(National Reference Library of Science and Invention), 국립과학기술대출도서관(國立科學技術貸出圖書館)(National Lending Library for Science and Technology), 국립중앙도서관(國立中央圖書館)(National Central Library) 및 영국국립서지관(英國國立書誌館)(British National Bibliography)을 통합(統合)하여 3부(部)로 구성(構成)되어질 것이다.

정부는 지난 10월, 사상 처음으로 정부 기구의 하나로 '원자력안전위원회'를 설립했다. 후쿠시마 원전 사고 이후, 뒤늦게나마 그 필요성을 절감한 때문이다. 그 '원자력 안전'의 뒤안길에는 1961년, 우리나라에 최초의 연구용원자로 건설에 참여한 이후 50년여 세월을 '원자력의 안전과 산업화'를 주창하며 그 일에만 매달려온 우리나라 원자력 1세대인 임용규 박사(78)가 있다. 정부 수립 직후 출범한 원자력청의 연구관을 시작으로 주미대사관 초대과학관, 국립과학관장, 과학기술부 원자력위원, 한국원자력안전기술원장 등을 역임하였고, 지금도 한국원자력안전아카데미 이상장으로 행공학을 하는 후학들을 격력하고 있는 임용규 박사를 서울 강남에 있는 아카데미에서 만났다.

Science museums are platforms of PUS (public understanding of science). The purpose of this study was to explore the science communicators' competencies critical in interacting with visitors from the comparison of their training and professional development programs nationally and internationally. The managers running science communicators' programs and communicators themselves from six different national science museums and those from five different international ones participated in the structured survey. The data from surveys were compared among respondents to draw common and specific descriptions for communicators' competencies. In addition, the experienced exemplary science communicator, Ms. Park, participated in this study and the data from her observation field notes, her own developed science communicators' manual, and interviews were used to support the result. The contextual model of learning in science museums (Falk, 2006) was used to illustrate science communicators' expertise. National managers and science communicators showed difference in their perception about science communicators' roles, difficulties, and improvement for their competencies. Internationally, the managers and science communicators showed similar perception about communicators' competencies in terms of the contextual model of learning. It is highly suggested that practice-based science communicators' training and professional development programs must be offered on the basis of interaction between experienced and novice communicators as mentors and mentees systems.

2008년 11월에 개관한 국립과천과학관은 매년 약 150만 명의 관람객이 방문하고 있으며, 천체투영관과 천체관측소에도 매년 20만 명 이상이 방문하고 있어 지금까지 방문한 총 누적 인원은 100만 명이 넘는다. 그리고 그동안 국립과천과학관에서는 일식, 월식, 유성우와 같은 특별한 천문현상 관측행사, 국제천체투영관영화제, 천체투영관 음악회와 과학 토크콘서트, 천문학 교실 등 다양한 천문 행사와 교육프로그램이 진행되어 천문학 대중화의 대표적인 기관으로 자리 잡았다. 하지만 점점 높아지고 있는 관람객들의 눈높이와 요구수준을 맞추기 위해서는 더욱 창의적이고 새로운 행사와 교육프로그램을 개발하여야 한다. 이것은 현재 천문시설을 운영하고 있거나 앞으로 운영할 계획인 다른 기관들도 모두 공통적으로 직면하고 있는 현실일 것이다. 이번 발표에서는 그동안의 국립과천과학관 천문시설의 운영 경험을 공유하고 향후 발전 방향을 함께 논의하는 기회를 가져보고자 한다.

Global warming has affected the distribution of organisms for decades and has displayed rapid ascent recently. Research into the effects on tropical organisms are vital. Padina boryana is a resourceful marine microalgae in the Maldives Sea in the Laccadive region. A 70% ethanol extraction (PBE) of this seaweed was used to investigate its antioxidant potential. Both in vitro and in vivo models were implemented. PBE exhibited protective potential against H₂O₂ induced apoptosis. ROS levels were suppressed due to PBE. PBE expressed a cytoprotective nature. In vivo experiments involving the zebra fish model conformed its validity. The antioxidant efficacy of PBE was dose dependent. Study outcomes suggest PBE has potential as a novel and valuable marine resource to aid the functional food and cosmeceutical industries.

The number of science museums in Korea has expanded quantitatively from 72 in 2008 to 128 in 2016. This study started with the fact that the government puts a lot of budget into building a science museum, but there are more than one quarter of science museums with less than 50 spectators per day and many inefficient institutions. The number of visitors is an important factor in improving the efficiency of the science museum operation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between the service quality of the science museum and the customer satisfaction and the intention to revisit and to find out what kind of effort should be concentrated in the science museum to attract more visitors. Questionnaires were written in the exhibition, education, and culture fields of the Gwacheon National Science Museum. The results were derived by frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results and contents of the study are as follows. First, in the field of exhibition, the quality of exhibition facilities was expected to affect customer satisfaction and intention to return, but did not have a meaningful relationship. Second, the education sector has been found to affect customer satisfaction and return intention in all aspects of service quality (operation and contents, instructors, educational facilities and environment). Third, in the field of culture (event), the quality of the cultural program influences the visitor satisfaction, but it does not affect the intention to revisit. The science museum can provide satisfaction to visitors by combining activities such as science and arts. Despite the limitations, it is necessary to make efforts to improve the visitor satisfaction and revisit by proceeding with the convergence research on the entire National Science Museum in the future.

현재 국내에는 약 40여 개의 종합(관측실과 투영관이 있는) 천문시설이 운영 중에 있으며 새로운 시설이 꾸준히 추가로 건설 되고 있다. 그리고 교육과학연구원, 도서관 등 많은 시설에서 천문시설을 갖추고 교육에 활용하고 있다. 그런데 대부분의 천문시설에서는 별자리 설명, 천체투영관에서의 영상물 상영, 그리고 천체망원경을 이용한 관측실습 등 한정된 소재와 일관된 형식의 천문교육 프로그램을 운영 하고 있다. 하지만 국립과천과학관에서 방학 중 천문학교실을 운영해본 결과 좀 더 깊이 있는 천문학 교육에 대한 수요가 상당히 많다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 실제 과학교육 현장에서는 여러 분야의 다양한 교육프로그램들이 개발되어 운영되고 있으나 천문학을 주제로 한 교육은 찾아보기 어려운 상황이다. 천문학은 새로운 연구 결과가 가장 활발하게 발표되는 분야들 중 하나로, 일반인이나 언론에서도 상당히 많은 관심을 보여주고 있다. 외계행성 탐사, 초신성 관측, 우주 가속팽창과 같은 최신 천문학 분야의 다양한 주제들을 이용하여 교육프로그램을 개발하면 일반인들에게 천문학의 내용을 알리는데 좋은 기회가 될 수 있을 것이다. 국립과천과학관에서는 방학 프로그램에 이어 조금 더 심화된 교육프로그램을 기획하여 운영할 준비를 하고 있다. 현재 국립과천과학관에서 준비 중인 천문교육프로그램을 소개하고 여러 사람들의 의견을 들어보고자 한다.

This study was started to find a way to activate the regional tour program of the Gwacheon National Science Museum, which covers a relatively wide area among public service organizations with the theme of science. In addition to the permanent exhibition program, the Gwacheon National Science Museum has been conducting tour programs in Gyeonggi and Gangwon Province since 2018 for residents in underprivileged regions who are unable to visit the Science Museum for geographic and environmental reasons, but it lacks awareness and effectiveness compared to other areas such as culture, welfare for the elderly, and education. As a result of the study, the first was an opportunity for a very special experience. The second was the joy of the few, A total of 3 upper units and 5 lower units were derived. This has positive effects such as increasing interest in science and expanding opportunities for experience. but it can be seen that it is urgent to supplement such as systematic promotion and improvement of the quality level of contents through professional artists.
