Grain size measurement based on marked watershed algorithm (유역분할 알고리즘을 이용한 결정립 크기 측정)

  • Grain size of material is important factor in evaluating mechanical properties. Methods for grain size determination are described in ASTM grain size standards. However, conventional method require pretreatment of the surface to clarify grain boundaries. In this study, the grain size from the surface image obtained from scanning electron microscope was measured using the watershed algorithm, which is a region-based method among image segmentation techniques. The shapes of the crystals are similar to each other, but the size and growth height are different. In addition, crystal grains are adjacent to each other, so it is very similar to the shape image of the topography. Therefore, grain boundaries can be efficiently detected using the Watershed algorithm.

Growth Response of Strawberry Seedlings to Application of Solid Chlorella (고형 클로렐라 시비에 대한 딸기유묘의 생육 반응)

  • A liquid-type chlorella (LC) produced by self-cultivation is used for strawberry cultivation by farmers in Korea. This study aimed to investigate seedling growth in two strawberry cultivars 'Soraya' and 'Haruhi' after applying solid-type chlorella (SC) in the greenhouse for 30 d. The treatments were as follows: Control, LC (0.2% of 1.0 × 107 cells/mL), ¼ SC (12.5 g/m2), ½ SC (25 g/m2), and SC (50 g/m2). Compared to the control, in the ½ SC treatment, dry weight of the seedlings increased at 30 days after treatment (DAT). Phosphorus content in the leaves of 'Soraya' seedlings of the SC treatment increased compared to that of the control. At 10 and 30 DAT, photosynthetic pigments including chlorophylls and carotenoids in the seedlings of both cultivars increased with the ½ SC treatment. These results indicate that the application of SC improved the growth of strawberry seedlings and could replace LC.

  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip is a common malignant tumor originating from oral cancer. However, unlike other areas, the lips hold significant functional and aesthetic importance as a part of the face. As a result, a tailored approach based on the tumor's size, type, and location is essential. The Karapandzic flap is especially suitable for reconstructing lesions located on the lip, particularly when the size of the cancer is large and other surgical treatments like free flaps are not feasible. It allows for extensive resection beyond the size of the lower lip. In this case, considering the patient's overall condition, successful reconstruction of the lower lip was achieved using the Karapandzic flap.

Evaluation of the Characteristics of High-Flux Reverse Osmosis Membranes with Various Additives (다양한 첨가제에 따른 고투과성 역삼투막의 특성평가)

  • In this study, in order to improve the performance of the reverse osmosis membrane with high water flux and high salt rejection, a study was conducted on the evaluation of characteristics according to the curing temperature and time during various additives and interfacial polymerization. The morphology of the membrane with no additives and the membrane with additives both showed a "rigid-and-valley" structure, confirming that the polyamide layer was successfully polymerized on the surface of the porous support layer. In addition, the additive of 2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (EHD) had improved hydrophilicity and water flux, which was confirmed by measuring the contact angle. Finally, a highly permeable TFC membrane with NaCl and MgSO4 salt rejection of 97.78% and 98.7% and a high water flux of 3.31 L/(m2⋅h⋅bar) was prepared.

  • Corrosion of steel plate is common phenomenon which results in the gradual destruction caused by a wide variety of environments. Corrosion monitoring is the tracking of the degradation progress for a long period of time. Corrosion on steel plate appears as a discoloration and any irregularities on the surface. In this study, we developed a quantitative evaluation method of the rust formed on steel plate by using k-means clustering from the corroded area in a given image. The k-means clustering for automated corrosion detection was based on the GrabCut segmentation and Gaussian mixture model(GMM). Image color of the corroded surface at cut-edge area was analyzed quantitatively based on HSV(Hue, Saturation, Value) color space.

Processing and Quality Characteristics of Rapidly Fermented, High Purity Anchovy Engraulis japonicus Sauce with Salt Fermented Anchovy Material (멸치(Engraulis japonicus) 염장발효덧을 이용한 속성발효 고순도 멸치액젓의 제조 및 품질)

  • To develop a value-added anchovy Engraulis japonicus sauce, we examined processing conditions and quality characteristics of rapidly fermented, high purity anchovy sauce (RPAS) by adding 30% (w/w) intermediate salt-fermented anchovy material. RPAS had higher total nitrogen and amino nitrogen contents, and lower salinity than traditional anchovy sauce (TAS). The total amino acid contents of RPAS and TAS were 17,626.8 and 12,808.2 mg/100 g, respectively, and the major amino acids were alanine, glutamic acid, lysine, cystine, valine, and leucine. The histamine contents of RPAS and TAS were 12.6 and 25.2 mg/100 g, respectively, and the protease activity levels were 0.851 and 0.595 unit/mg, respectively. These results demonstrate that RPAS was more flavorful, and could shorten the salt-fermentation period by more than half compared to TAS, and can serve as a high-end fish sauce.
