  • The purpose of this study is to increase access to information on old maps and to discuss efficient ways to utilize old maps, such as providing services and information using old maps. To this end, the information search system of domestic institutions that provide old map information was investigated, and methods of searching for old map data and accessing information were searched on the website. In addition, the current status of the collection of old maps in domestic libraries and museums was analyzed by referring to the homepage, book, research book, and publication of each institution. As a result of the analysis, about 2,200 old maps were housed in 76 institutions, including national, public, and university libraries and museums nationwide. Each institution in the collection of old maps was carrying out publication business, such as publication of English manuscripts, exhibitions and books, publication of research document edits such as lists and summaries. However, reading and using of original documents are limited due to the rare nature of old maps and the data characteristics of the only one. In order to effectively utilize old maps, first, it is necessary to improve access to old map information services and expand academic information services. Second, it is proposed to use old maps as data for archival construction that reflects the identity of the region. Third, it is necessary to cultivate professional manpower who selects and provides information based on knowledge of old map data and humanities literacy.

  • This study summarized the results of the conservation treatment and investigation on the production method of the golden crown (Treasure No. 339) excavated from Tomb No. 129 (also known as Seobongchong Tomb) in Noseo-dong, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. The golden crown from Seobongchong Tomb was discovered during the excavations conducted by the Museum of the Government-General of Korea in 1926 during the Japanese colonial era. It is currently in the collection of the National Museum of Korea. A total of six Silla golden crowns have survived in Korea, among which the crown from Seobongchong Tomb is the only example with a dome-shaped hemispherical decoration attached with a bird ornament while otherwise showing the typical features of Silla crowns. The crown had been repaired following its excavation using metallic materials and adhesives, but due to the partial deformation and damage brought about by the repair materials, it required further conservation treatment. This article describes in detail the overall process of the conservation treatment and the restoration of the original form of the golden crown from Seobongchong Tomb, particularly the method of reinforcing the joints to secure the stability of the crown. It presents the characteristics of the crown's production as revealed in the investigation during the conservation treatment, and further analyzes the relationship of this crown from Seobongchong Tomb with other Silla crowns through a comparison of their production techniques. The investigation revealed that the crown was primarily decorated with golden sequins at the time of its production. At a later point some of the sequins in the upright ornament were replaced with comma-shaped jade beads and additional comma-shaped jade beads were added to the headband. In order to determine if such modifications to the decoration had occurred with other Silla crowns, the decoration of the six extant Silla golden crowns were investigated. The crown from Cheonmachong Tomb features traces of this same modification to the decoration and possesses other similarities with the crown from Seobongchong Tomb.

  • Except the time when the relics of the museum are exhibited or loaned to the public, they are stored in a storage. Therefore, the environmental condition of a storage is a important factor. But in Korea, the appearance of the building and exhibition design are emphasized more than any other factors in planing museums, so the preservation technology has not yet reached the appropriate level and leaded to some environmental problem in the museum storage. The purpose of this study is to suggest guideline for an apt storage system by reconsidering practical notes in planning storage and give a efficient long-term plans examinable category. So this study based on the research had been stated from the recognition that the relics should be planned and placed differently in sorts, and developed this by researching the theory related to the matter throughout documents and to cope with the low efficiency in its essential role compared to the massive investment and through on-the-spot surveys emphasizing on the storage of the domestic museums in progress since 1995. Hereafter it compares the actual condition and problems of the domestic museum planning with the ones abroad, and analyzes the characteristic and difference between the two, and then establish an organized storage system.

  • A museum's collections is fundamental factors to construct important activity of museum performing a role as cultural facility for learning, education and research. Therefore, conservation of collections through appropriate environments is previously established in step of planing a museum. Hereby, the purpose of this study is to set up the classification of collections and suggest a useful guidance of the storage division in a domestic museum. The results of this study are as follows. First, the main factors of deterioration are temperature and relative humidity in a museum storage, so classification of collections should be set up according to the objective standards of these factors. Second, the classification of collections can be performed as follow: the group for nonorganic materials subdivide metal, chinaware, earthenware, and jade stone, the group for organic materials subdivide leather hair paper fabric, bone horn shell mound and wood herbage and the group for composed materials. Third, for storage division of a domestic museum, basically has to consider that it is reasonable to plan $4{\sim}5$ storages in metal, jade stone, chinaware earthenware, and organic materials of $1{\sim}2$ units in case of a serial of history like archaeological, antique museum. And in case of folk relics of modern and contemporary arts are collected, it is reasonable to plan over 5 storages add composed materials to foregoing classification.

  • This paper compares presentation methods which are characteristic among museums of natural history in Korea. The different medium for exhibitions are divided into Specimen, Model or Panel Type Displays, Video Presentations, Sound, and Tactile Exhibits, and further classified as Fixed (A Type), Observable (B Type), or Performance Art (C Type) Displays. The museums we studied were the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History, Ewha Womans University Museum of Natural History, Seoul National Science Museum, Gyeryongsan Natural History Museum, the National Science Museum, Mokpo Natural History Museum, and the JejuDo Folklore and Natural History Museum. A study of these museums' approaches to display composition, and exhibition methods according to their exhibit types and contents, revealed the following results: The museums of natural history rely more on Fixed type displays to show information, with appropriate uses of the Observable and the Performance Art type exhibitions. Better utilization of appropriate medium is desired for display contents of Astronomy Space Earth, Minerals Rocks Geology, Animals, Plants, Insects, Prehistoric Organisms Environment, and Anthropology.
