The Relationship between Power and Place of the Jeonju Shrine in the Period of Japanese Imperialism (일제강점기(日帝强占期) 조선신사(朝鮮神社)의 장소(場所)와 권력(權力): 전주신사(全州神社)를 사례(事例)로)

  • This study of Shintoism is to inquire the relationships between social-political ideology and place of Shinto shrine(神社). In Korea, the Shinto shrine was a place of the center of Japanese colonial policy that symbolized the goal of Japanese Imperialism. This was one of the strategies of "Japan and Korea Are One". Before the China and Japan War in 1937, the number of shrines amounted to 51 sites, 12 of them were closely related to open ports, and the others were located at inland major cities. They also were associated with railroad transportation systems that tied coast and inland major cities. This spatial distribution of shrines was so called "Shrine Network" that was essential in tracing Japanese invasion into Korea. It was an imperial place where Japanese residence and colonial landscape were combined together to show the strength of Japanese Imperialism. Most of shrines were located at a hill with a view on the slope of a mountain and honored Goddess Amaterasu and the Meiji Emperor. I presume from these facts that Shinto Shrine was a supervisionary organization for strategic purpose. The Jeonju Shrine was located on a small hill, Dagasan(65m) where commanded a splendid view of Jeonju city and honored Goddess Amaterasu and the Meiji Emperor. It was a place which was adjacent to Japanese residence and colonial landscape. The Dagasan was changed as a symbolic site for Japanese Imperialism. But, after liberation in 1945, the social-political symbol of the hill was changed. By the strong will of civil, there was a monument to the loyal dead and the national poet, Yi Byeng-gi placed for national identity at the site of the demolished Jeonju Shrine. Dagasan as a place of national identity, shows the symbolic decolonization and the changing ideology. After all, this shows that political ideology is represented in a place with landscape.

The Political Ecology of Salmon: Production and Conservation of 'Nature' in Ecotourism (연어의 정치생태학: 생태관광에서 나타나는 '자연'의 생산과 보존)

  • This study investigates the processes of the "Production of Nature" and the preservation and exploitation of nature in the local festival. The recent discussions in tourism geography address the neoliberalization of nature with its political-ecological interpretation. Yangyang-gun has been one of the main regions that have made efforts to make salmon back to the streams. Also, the Yangyang Salmon Festival was organized to celebrate and symbolize the successful restoration of nature. In fact, however, the festival focuses on the commercialization of salmon. Moreover, it is hard to consider Namdaecheon as the successfully restored ecosystem for salmon. As the returning number of salmon has not significantly increased and the festival itself has not been successful to attract many tourists, the local people show declining interest on the conservation of salmon. Contrast to the catchphrase of the festival to emphasize the conservation of nature and restoration of ecosystem, there are still many hurdles that jeopardize returning of salmon. This controversy leads diverse actors into conflict over the conservation of salmon and Namdaecheon. The players in the dispute encompass local people, local and national governments and international organization. Nature appropriated for ecotourism is selectively defined, used and emphasized by the interests of agencies at multiple scales. The findings of this study show that the concept of "Produced Nature" is more useful than intrinsic or original perspective on nature as long as we try to understand the commercialization of nature that is appropriated for the repertoire of local festival.

  • After the two big wars (Imjin Woeran and Byungia Horan), the Lee Dynasty confronted rapid transitional periods in almost all aspects of the society. Corruption of the governmental system by the wars and disordered social structures also caused confusion in the social position system. In addition, development of the commercial economic system and monetary economy brought up a new rich middle-class, "Joong in Gyegeup". In ideological aspects, Confucianism indulged in and stick to isms and ics, and the Confucian morality slackened, thus a more pragmatic ideology, "Silhak Sasang", developed. And the emergence of the modern literature and art of the 'common people' was followed by the appearance of the common-people class including those having the common-people concept among the noble-class "Yangban Gyegeup". This evoked a new common costume culture and the fashion appeared. The public could no longer find the power and appeal from the preexisting ruling classes due to the changed role and sense of value. Thus, they sought a new symbolic leader group that would to be the new standard of the newly changed society. That was a group of people called as "Kisaeng" liberal and independent. They were performing social activities, enjoying poetry, music and dancing, and classy dressers, having physically attractive bodies. The erotic as well as luxurious mode proposed by them reflected the trend of that time. It concurred well with the concept and taste of the public, so it was accepted with a good response. That is, by following these leaders, the public achieved their identification and tried to share the prestige of the leaders. For this reason, the Kisaeng group attracted the public attention and led the taste of the public, thereby becoming the influential fashion leaders of that age.

A Study on Monumental Expression of Korean War Memorials in Korea (6.25전쟁 기념공간에 나타난 기념적 표현)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the monumental expression of Korean War Memorials(KWM) in Korea(KWMK). Through site survey and internet searching, the researcher selected 17 KWMK and analyzed four analysis categories: contents, spatial form, landscape elements, sculptures and architectural elements. The results are as follows: 1. The analysis revealed that main contents of KWMK were to cherish victims of the Korean War, honor military merit, and explain Korean War. 2. Most KWMK built battlefield had the form of symmetry and spatial axis arranged monuments and sculptures for solemnity and heroism. Though the sites were terraced by traditional spatial order, spatial sequence wasn't seen except Yang-gu KWMK and Chumomyeongbi in United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea. 3. Stone monument-like towers, tablets, podium, monoliths, cenotaphs, and exhibit halls to explain Korean War and combat history were used as main elements of KWMK and also, war weapons were often displayed the flags of countries taking part in Korean War were raised with Taegeukgi and the United Nations flag. 4. Most sculptures were used as important media to represent the Korean War and assumed realistically the form of heroic combat. But a few architectural memorial built in recent were designed in contemporary style to have spatial sequence and represent Korean War symbolically and narratively. 5. In memorial culture, KWMK were strongly influenced by ideology and patriotism, impacted by conventional value, and designed by some sculptors and designers in a certain circle. Further study will be required to analyze the characteristics of KWMK in the point of design style and diachronic.

Effects of vocational roles on the perceived prejudice of people with psychiatric disabilities (직업적 역할은 정신장애인이 지각한 편견을 감소시키는가?)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out some factors affecting the social prejudice perceived by people with psychiatric disability(PPD) and to present some useful explanations for those effects based on theories from symbolic interactionism. The hypotheses were as follow. First, the higher the symptoms, the higher will be the perceived social prejudice of PPD. Second, if PPD have vocational roles, the perceived prejudice will be lower. Third, if PPD want more services or supports for vocational rehabilitation, the perceived prejudice will be higher. Fourth, the higher the perceived prejudice of family members, the higher will be the perceived prejudice of PPD. The results show that the major hypotheses were supported. Based on the results some theoretical and clinical implications are discussed. First, this study made a little contribution to the study of perceived social prejudice of PPD providing some useful theoretical basis and empirical evidences. Secondly, due to the limitation of the data and cross-sectional research the results of this study need to be duplicated under more rigorous experimental or quasi-experimental study. Concerning the clinical intervention, it should be stressed to provide valued social roles to help PPD protect themselves from social prejudices. Secondly, rehabilitation professionals need to help PPD cope with increasing perceived prejudice while pursuing valued social roles such as employee. Third, rehabilitation professionals should assess the perceived prejudice of family members and to help them resist social prejudices through education, self-help groups, and other advocating strategies. Lastly, professionals should be carful not to blame family members for the adverse effects of their perceived prejudice on PPD.

  • This thesis has an intention to reorganize the topic of Ontology that has not unnoticed, investigating the symbolic signs of Zhuxi. The symbols in Ontology visualize in an anthropomorphic form or a form of animals that we can usually find in the nature. The visible symbols have characteristics of the dynamic rather than the stillness. The symbols of human and a horse have developed as different interpretations depending on the relative importance. The movement of stream symbolize the Movement of Daoti that manifests thorough all things in the Dao and have a structure of 'Ti-Xiang-Yong'. The Substance of Metaphysics embodies an action thorough 'Metaphysics' or 'with Metaphysics'. Accordingly, 'a stream' symbolizes 'the Movement of Daoti' in that it manifests the form of Daoti makes body. A kite and a fish symbolize the form of a kite flies up into the sky and the shape of a fish plays in the pond. These not only represent an outlook on the world, but also symbolize the stage of the Movement of Daoti. 'Human', 'a stream', 'a kite' and 'a fish' include activeness, domination, dynamics, manifestation, visibility, naturalness.

A Study on the Flower Design Based on Storytelling : Focus on the Funeral Flower Design (스토리텔링을 적용한 화훼디자인에 관한 연구 -장례 화훼디자인을 중심으로-)

  • In this paper, the funeral was defined as a culture of death and, on the most important ideological basis, the biological death was not recognized as the end of the world, but as a starting point for another life. Various funeral cultures were investigated and the funeral floral design was analyzed through the case. Based on this, it was concluded that Korea's funeral floral design was an impediment to the development of funeral floral design, similar to the use of limited materials. Storytelling, a communicative concept through the exchange of emotions and opinions, rather than unilaterally conveying a message as an answer, is one of the most effective marketing strategies in the emotional consumption era. Based on this, the target person was selected to analyze life and draw suggestions from his life. Accordingly, the production of the work was attempted by applying storytelling to the funeral floral design. The painting design applied to storytelling expressed the symbol and meaning of the painting design material, and the color and form of the floral design in various forms and colors of pastel line, which are based on peach color that symbolizes the deceased, in a departure from the traditional funeral painting design with the solemn atmosphere of the geometric design centered on the white chrysanthemum material.

  • Iron-making industries of the country, regardless of age has been the focus. This makes the iron production technology and production techniques that result in increased economic activity and because of the central charge. Therefore, the social development of ancient iron-making technology is based on phase-sensitive. Modern steel making up the monopoly of the country's target under the strict control of production, distribution was. It is essential to produce iron weapons was a threat is because you can keep the throne in the hands of the forces that can cause side effects when I went was to block. This study created a rail Cholbi(iron monument) and the regional distribution pattern of the production, construction background, looked on. Cholbi(iron monument) for the production and recording "the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty" often appear in history books and many academic interests, but was off target. Compared to a stone monument that was not generally as well as the Japanese colonial period and over the course of modernization destroyed, damaged a lot of cases the cause may be found in front.   • In this study, "Young Architects Program" pavilion architecture, where many formal, material, structural challenges were examined, was selected for an analysis of the regional expression of various culture in five countries in different continents. For comparative analysis, five criteria of evaluation, symbolic, tectonic, contextual, tactile, environmental, were set through an analysis of previous studies. Through these five criteria, the methods of regional expression of architectural concepts in five different countries were compared to indicate the characteristics of the different culture in same theme and type of pavilion architecture.

Determinants of Journals on the Fields of Technology, Innovation and Management (TIM) in China - An Analysis of Jishu Jingji (중국 기술혁신관리(TIM) 분야의 학술지 속성 결정요인 - 기술경제(技術經濟)지 분석을 중심으로)

  • This is an analysis of three hypotheses in the fields of Technology, Innovation, and Management (TIM) analyzing the journal of Jishu Jingji (Technology Economics) which is published by the Chinese Society of Techno-economics. The Jishu Jingji journal is similar to other Chinese journals in TIM as follows: First, it's short in length. Second, there are a few references and foreign references can be counted with fingers of one hand. Third, the journal's scope is similar to others in TIM such as technolog-firm-industry. The differences are as follows: First, they have more general topics on the firm and the economy than other journals in TIM. Second, technologies covered are those of existing industries and infrastructure rather than emerging technologies and industries. Third, editors rarely submit papers to the journal. Finally, the expertise of the editors is diverse which is similar to the scope of the journal. First proposed hypothesis on journals in TIM is that journals represent country specific characteristics over field specificities, and this view is widely accepted in China. Second hypothesis is that editors are representatives of authors, but this hypothesis is rejected, at least in this journal. Third hypothesis is that the composition of editors reflects the scope of journals, and this hypothesis is generally accepted.
