  • Due to the constantly varying sea-state with which any wave energy conversion device must contend in order to extract energy efficiently , the ability to control the device's position relative to the incident waves is critical in achieving the creation of a truly functional and economical wave energy device. In this paper, the authors will propose methodology based on the theory of a variable structure system to utilize a three dimensional source distribution as a model to estimate anticipated surge, sway and yaw of a wave energy conversion device relative to varying angles and characteristics of incident waves and there from derive a feedback to a sliding mode controller which would reposition the device so as to maximize its ability to extract energy from waves in constantly varying ocean conditions.

  • Most previous studies for finding optimal design parameters of a tuned mass damper(TMD) have been focused on the harmonic excited single-degree-of freedom system. In this study, optimal values of damping ratio and tuning frequency ratio of a TMD applied to control a seismically excited structure are investigated through numerical analyses. Considering that the structural responses due to earthquake loads are strongly dependent on the soil condition, the site effects on the optimal parameters of the TMD are studied and compared to those presented by previous studies. Numerical analyses results indicate that better control performance can be obtained by using the parameters proposed by this study in the seismic application of the TMD.

  • This paper focuses on a recently proposed asymmetric base-isolation coupling control system (ABiCS) for the vibration control of adjacent twin buildings. The ABiCS consists of inter-story diagonal dampers, a connecting damper between the two buildings, and a seismic isolation device at the base floor of one building. To investigate the control characteristics of ABiCS, a parametric study was performed by numerically simulating the 20-story twin buildings. In the parametric study, the control capacities of the inter-story diagonal dampers, connecting damper, and seismic isolation device were considered as varying parameters. The parametric study results indicate that the connecting damper between the two buildings reduces the responses of both buildings only at optimal or near-optimal capacity. In addition, adjusting the stiffness of the base isolation is found to be the most effective method for improving seismic performance and achieving cost-effectiveness. Accordingly, we presented a scenario-based performance improvement approach in which reducing the stiffness of the base isolation device could be an effective technique to improve the seismic performance of both buildings. However, note that checking the maximum allowable displacement of the base isolation device is essential.

  • The response spectrum was studied using the observed pound motion from the Odaesan Earthquake (2007/01/20), and then the results were compared to the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60) applied to the domestic nuclear power plants. For the response spectrum analysis, 21 horizontal and 8 vertical observed Pound motions were used for normalization and statistical analysis. The results showed that the MPOSD (Mean Plus One Sigma Standard Deviation) response spectra above 10 Hz revealed higher values than the design response spectra and those below 10 Hz revealed much lower values fur both horizontal and vertical response spectra. These results suggest that the response spectra (Reg. Guide 1.60), used as seismic design code for nuclear facilities in Korea, especially above about 10 Hz, should be reexamined fur apllication to the nuclear power plants structures operated in the Korean Peninsula.

  • In this paper, magneto-rheological(MR) damper is studied for vibration control of large infra structures under earthquake. Generally, active control devices need a large control force and a high power supply system to reduce the vibration effectively. Large and miss tuned control force may induce the dangerous situation such that the generated large control force acts to amplify the structural vibration. Recently, to overcome the weaknesses of the active control, the semi-active control method is suggested by many researchers. Semi-active control uses the passive control device of which the characteristics can be modified. Control force of the semi-active device is not generated from the actuator with power supply. It is generated as a dynamic reaction force of the device same as in the passive control case, so the control system is inherently stable and robust. Unlike the case of passive control, control force of semi-active control is adjusted depending on the measured response of the structure, so the vibration can be reduced more effectively against various unknown environmental loads. Magneto-rheological(MR) damper is one of the semi-active devices. Dynamic characteristics of the MR material can be changed by applying the magnetic fields. So the control of MR damper needs only small power. Response time of MR to the input voltage is very short, so the high performance control is possible. MR damper has a high force capacity so it is adequate to the vibration control of large infra structure. Because MR damper has a nonlinear property, normal control method used in active control may not be effective. Clipped optimal control, modified bang-bang control etc. have been suggested to MR damper by many researchers. In this study, sliding mode fuzzy control(SMFC) is applied to MR damper. Genetic algorithm is used for the controller tuning. To verify the applicability of MR damper and suggested algorithm, numerical simulation on the aseismic control is carried out. Simulation model is three-story building structure, which was used in the paper of Dyke, et al. The control performance is compared with clipped optimal control. The present results indicate that the SMFC algorithm can reduce the earthquake-induced vibration very effectively.

  • Civil structures are becoming more flexible and lightly damped. When subjected to dynamic loads such as wind, earthquake and wave, vibration may be easily induced and lasted for lond duration. To suppress the wind-induced and earthquake-induced vibration of high-rise buildings, study on the development of a tuned mass damper has been carried out. Based on optimal design on passive tuned mass damper which is considered for a building subject to random excitations, a biaxial tuned mass damper was designed and developed. It is confirmed that the vibration levels of the test structure are reduced using the developed tuned mass damper.

  • This study investigates vertical vibration control method for railway structure by using vertical vibration control device. The device consists of high stiffness polyurethane spring and friction damper recognized by National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research of USA for durability. To confirm the capacity of vertical vibration control, at first, behavior equation is established by considering correlation among the components. Then, hysteresis curve is drawed from behavior equation. By considering both dynamic behaviors and material nonlinearities, more reasonable behavior of the device can be simulated. After that, the Validity of the vibration control trend is proved by FEM(Finite Element Method).

  • This article proposes a new technique of the dynamic model using multi-body dynamic analysis tool for a flexible main spindle rotor system with a novel phase adjusting control technique for the purpose of an active control of rotor vibration. The dynamic model is used as a plant model. Also in order to make control system, a component parameters and phase controller is composed and simulated by SIMULINK. The vibration is reduced to 50%. Therefore the ADAMS dynamic model for the flexible main spindle rotor and the phase adjusting control techniques may be effective for the suppressing the vibration and helpful for the future active control for rotor vibration.

  • Chip mounter which is used to pick chips from the pre-specified position and place them on the target location of PCB is an essential device in semiconductor and LCD industries. Quick and high precision positioning is the key technology needed to increase productivity of chip mounters. As increasing acceleration and deceleration of placing motion, structural vibration induced from inertial reactive force and flexibility of mounter structure becomes a serious problem degrading positioning accuracy. Motivated from these, this paper proposed a new control design algorithm which combines a mounter structure acceleration feedforward compensation and an extended sliding mode control for fine positioning and suppression of structural vibration, simultaneously. The feasibility of the proposed control design was verified along with some simulation results.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the robust input shaping for control of the residual vibration of flexible structures has been investigated. Two approaches has been used for the robustness of input shaping: the first method is to increase the number of impulses, and the other includes an EI shaper using vector diagram. The input case designed by the application of the above methods has been applied to a control problem involving residual vibration of a rotating hub with two flexible appendages. It has been found by a series of experiments that the input shaper designed in this paper works well for the residual vibration control of the flexible structure.
