  • For the perforated cylindrical shell submerged in fluid, it is almost impossible to develop a finite element model due to the necessity of the fine meshing of the shell and the fluid at the same time. This necessitates the use of solid shell with equivalent material properties. Unfortunately the effective elastic constants are not found in any references even though the ASME code is suggesting those for perforated plate. Therefore in this study the equivalent material properties of perforated shell are suggested by performing several finite element analyses with respect to the ligament efficiencies.

  • In this paper, fluid-structure of interaction behavior of a fluid-filled cylindrical polymer container impacted by a high speed spherical projectile was studied using ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method. The hydrodynamic ram phenomenon occurred by the impact projectile penetrating through the container was investigated by examining time histories of projectile velocity and fluid pressure and density. The analysis results were agreed reasonably well compared to those by experiments.

  • In the present study, a CFD program is developed for the Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis. The non-staggered, non-orthogonal, and unstructured grid system was also used to handle the complicated geometries in the program. In order to validate the capabilities of the developed CFD program, various models are investigated by using unstructured and nonorthogonal meshes. The predicted results are a good agreement with analytic solution, experimental data and commercial software. And also PISO algorithm is applied for transient flow analysis. The cyclic boundary condition and baffle cell are developed in order to improve the effectiveness of the calculation for complex geometry.

  • We conduct numerical simulations of the interaction of a deformable structure with two-phase compressible flow. The finite volume method (FVM) is used to simulate fluid phenomena including a shock wave, a gas bubble, and the deformation of free surface. The deformation of a floating structure is computed with the finite element method (FEM). The compressible two-phase volume of fluid (VOF) method is used for the generation and development of a cavitation bubble, and the immersed boundary method (IBM) is used to impose the effect of the structure on the fluid domain. The result of the simulation shows the generation of a shock wave, and the expansion of the bubble. Also, the deformation of the structure due to the hydrodynamic loading by the explosion is identified.

  • An evaluation method for flutter derivatives is proposed, using indicial functions of structural members produced by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Flutter derivatives are obtained by Fourier integration of indicial functions. Instead of direct simulation of oscillating objects, only the calculation of time-dependent lift and moment variations of fixed objects with constant attack angle are necessary. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is developed as a tool for the numerical method. For two rectangular sections having different aspect ratios, the numerical analysis and wind tunnel test are carried out to inspect the adequacy of this study. The results proved to be good, and they could be used for a preliminary design.

  • Radiated noise analysis from a ship structure is a challenging topic owing to difficulties in the accurate calculation of the fluid-structure interaction as well as owing to a massive degree of freedom of the problem. To reduce the severity of the problem, a new fluid-structure interaction formulation is proposed in this paper. The complex frequency-dependent added mass and damping matrices are calculated using the high-order Burton-Miller boundary integral equation formulation to obtain accurate values over all frequency bands. The calculated fluid-structure interaction effects are added to the structural matrices calculated by commercial finite element software, MSC/NASTRAN. Then, the impedance and underwater radiation noise due to an excitation of structure are calculated. The present formulation is applied to a ship to calculate the underwater radiated noise.

  • Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) was applied to control the vibration of an offshore structure due to ocean waves. The errors caused by the linearization of the fluid-structure interaction effect and the phenomena when using the linearized equation of motion in TMD design were analyzed. To determine the performance of TMD in controlling vibration, both regular waves with varying periods and irregular waves with different significant wave heights were used. When the offshore structure received regular waves with a period similar to the first natural period of structure. TMD performed well in terms of response reduction. Such was not the case for the other periods. however, In the case of irregular waves, TMD triggered the reduction of structural response for waves with relatively small significant wave height. For irregular waves with relatively big significant wave height, however, TMD did not show any control effect. Therefore, TMD is useful in reducing offshore structural vibration due to ambient waves, thereby helping secure fatigue life.

  • Preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined finite element formulation have been devised and tested for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a elastic body with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 finite element combined formulation. It has been shown that two preconditioners among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence for a bench-mark problem. Based on the verification of the preconditioners for the two-dimensional combined formulation, four preconditioners are proposed for the problem of an elastic body interacting with a flow.
