The objective of かis study is to investigate the feasibility of piezoelectric transducers as a damage detection system for civil infrastructures. There have been considerable amount of efforts by the modal analysis community to localize damage and evaluate its severity without looking at a reliable way to excite the structure. The detection of damages by modal analysis and similar vibration techniques depends upon the knowledge and estimation of various modal parameters. In addition to the associated difficulties, such low-frequency dynamic response based techniques fail to detect incipient damages. Smart piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) transducers which act as both actuators and sensors in a self-analyzing manner are emerging to be effective in non-parametric health monitoring of structural systems. In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study for the detection of damages using smart PZT transducers on the steel plate. The method of extracting the impedance characteristics of the PZT transducer, which is electro-mechanically coupled to the host structure, is adopted for damage detection. Two damages are simulated and assessed by the bonded PZT transducers for characterization. The experimental results verified the efficacy of the proposed approach and provided a demonstration of good robustness at the realistic steel structures, emphasizing the great potential for developing an automated in situ structural health monitoring system for application to large civil infrastructures without the need to blow the modal parameters.

Comparing with general optical fiber sensors performing localized measurement, distributed optical fiber sensors can measure along an optical fiber, and they have large measuring range. The surface-mounting method with epoxy adhesive is general in attaching optical fiber sensors to structures, This is also appliable to the structural integrity monitoring with Brillouin-scattering distributed optical fiber sensors. In this paper, Brillouin-scattering distributed optical fiber sensors, which are attached to the surface of a structure with epoxy adhesive, was verified with the finite element method. From the analysis results of strain transfer through the structure, optical fiber coating, cladding and core, the strain transfer rates were calculated. And the influence of the epoxy free-end was also studied.

In this research, the isolator and the inner gimbal inside of typical EO/IR equipment were replaced with a spring stabilizer. This Spring stabilizer system revealed an internal platform capable of external vibration damping and 6-DOF driving. This system was designed based on machined springs and spring modules of the spring stabilizer, structure, and other fixture. Through modal vibration analysis, suitable material for the spring was determined. Structural stability of the spring stabilization device was determined through random vibration analysis.

The acoustic emission(AE) technique is a well established method to carry out structural health monitoring(SHM) of large structures. However, the real-time monitoring of the crack growth in the roller coaster support structures is not easy since the vehicle operation produces very large noise as well as crack growth. In this investigation, we present the waveform parameter filtering method to classify acoustic sources in real-time. This method filtrates only the AE hits by the target acoustic source as passing hits in a specific parameter band. According to various acoustic sources, the waveform parameters were measured and analyzed to verify the present filtering method. Also, the AE system employing the waveform parameter filter was manufactured and applied to the roller coaster support structure in an actual amusement park.

The acoustic emission(AE) behavior of reinforced concrete slab under flexural loading was investigated to assess the integrity. This study was aimed at identifying the characteristics of AE response associated with damage development. By applying cyclic loading in various load steps, it was able to differentiate each AE source such as distributed micro crack initiation, friction, flexural crack and localized diagonal tension crack. The secondary peak and the change of AE hit rate gave valuable criteria fur assessment. From the analysis of the felicity ratio, furthermore, it was shown that this values can be used for evaluating the degree of concrete damage. Based on the experimental results, this approach for practical AE application may provide a promising method for estimating the level of damage and distress in concrete structures.

In this study, two kinds of smart accelerometers are investigated for the application of smart sensors to the structural health monitoring of infrastructures. Smart optical Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) type and Micro-Electo-Mechanical System (MEMS) type accelerometers are selected for this study and the high sensitive ICP type accelerometer is used for the reference sensor. Small size shaking table tests were performed with 3-story shear building model using random input ground motions. The output only modal identification was carried out using stochastic subspace identification and the performances of sensors are compared in modal domain indirectly. The modal sensitivity method was applied to update the story stiffness of numerical model and the updated results were verified using the additional experiments for the same structure with additional mass.
This paper introduces an artificial neuron which is a nano composite continuous sensor. The continuous nano sensor is fabricated as a thin and narrow polymer film sensor that is made of carbon nanotubes composites with a PMMA or a silicone matrix. The sensor can be embedded onto a structure like a neuron in a human body and it can detect deteriorations of the structure. The electrochemical impedance and dynamic strain response of the neuron change due to deterioration of the structure where the sensor is located. A network of the long nano sensor can form a structural neural system to provide large area coverage and an assurance of the operational health of a structure without the need for actuators and complex wave propagation analyses that are used with other methods. The artificial neuron is expected to effectively detect damage in large complex structures including composite helicopter blades and composite aircraft and vehicles.
An impact localization for a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite plate was performed using the multiplexed fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensors and the error-outlier based impact localization algorithm. We found that the optimal impact localization with the maximum error of 31.82 mm and the averaged error of 6.31 mm are obtained when the error threshold (ET) and constant level (CL) are 0.3 nm and 110, respectively. Moreover, the detailed process of impact localization under certain optimal parameters and the relevant results were thoroughly investigated. We conclude that the multiplexed FBG sensors and the error-outlier based impact localization algorithm are suitable for an impact localization on composite structures, and expect that they can be utilized for various structural health monitoring (SHM) in the future.

Nuclear power plants(NPP) are constructed and operated to ensure safety against natural disasters and man-made disasters in all processes including site selection, site survey, design, construction, and operation. This paper will introduce a series of efforts conducted in Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. Ltd., to assure the safety of nuclear power plant against earthquakes and other natural hazards. In particular, the present status of the earthquake, fault, and slope safety monitoring system for nuclear power plants is introduced. A earthquake observatory network for the NPP sites has been built up for nuclear safety and providing adequate seismic design standards for NPP sites by monitoring seismicity in and around NPPs since 1999. The Eupcheon Fault Monitoring System, composed of a strainmeter, seismometer, creepmeter, Global Positioning System, and groundwater meter, was installed to assess the safety of the Wolsung Nuclear Power Plant against earthquakes by monitoring the short- and long-term behavioral characteristics of the Eupcheon fault. Through the analysis of measured data, it was verified that the Eupcheon fault is a relatively stable fault that is not affected by earthquakes occurring around the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. In addition, it was confirmed that the fault monitoring system could be very useful for seismic safety analysis and earthquake prediction study on the fault. K-SLOPE System for systematic slope monitoring was successfully developed for monitoring of the slope at nuclear power plants. Several kinds of monitoring devices including an inclinometer, tiltmeter, tension-wire, and precipitation gauge were installed on the NPP slope. A macro deformation analysis using terrestrial LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) was performed for overall slope deformation evaluation.

A metal-coated FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor has a memory effect, which can recall the maximum strains experienced by the structure. In this study, a nickel-coated FBG sensor was fabricated through electroless (i.e., chemical plating) and electroplating. A thickness of approximately $43{\mu}m$ of a nickel layer was achieved. Then, we conducted cyclic loading tests for the fabricated nickel-coated FBG sensors to verify their capability to produce residual strains. The results revealed that the residual strain induced by the nickel coating linearly increased with an increase in the maximum strain experienced by the sensor. Therefore, we verified that a nickel-coated FBG sensor has a memory effect. The fabrication methods and the results of the cycle loading test will provide basic information and guidelines in the design of a nickel-coated FBG sensor when it is applied in the development of structural health monitoring techniques.
