This paper is a part of a research program to develop a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under seismic loading. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the relationship between ductility and confinement steel amount and to propose a design equation for reinforced concrete bridge columns. Computer program NARCC was used for parametric study, which was proved to provide good and conservative analytical result especially for deformation capacity and ductility factor compared with test result. A total of 7,200 reinforced concrete columns confined with spirals or perfect circular hoops were selected by combination of variables such as section diameter, aspect ratio, concrete compressive strength, yielding strength of longitudinal and confinement steel, longitudinal steel ratio, axial load ratio, and confinement steel ratio. Based on the parametric study a new design equation for confinement steel amount considering ductility demand was proposed, which can be used in the new seismic design method, i.e. ductility-based seismic design, for RC bridge columns.

In this research, major design factors have been evaluated for the establishment of the rational seismic design code of circular RC(reinforced concrete) bridge pier Previous experimental researches have drawn a conclusion that transverse confinement reinforcements have been excessively used for RC bridge piers in Korea. Thus, the objective of this study is to propose a rational design equation for transverse reinforcements of RC bridge piers in Korea which would be classified as a low or moderate seismic region. Newly proposed equation further considers the effect of the axial force ratio and the longitudinal steel ratio. Minimum transverse confinement steel ratio is also proposed to avoid probable buckling of the longitudinal reinforcing steels subjected to relatively low axial force. It is thought that these new codes seem to alleviate the rebar congestion in the plastic hinge region of RC bridge piers which contribute to the enhancement of constructibility and economization for RC bridge construction.

In this study, Behavior of Eccentrically Loaded Restrained Concrete Slender Columns are investigated the continuation. The paper is : nonlinear constitutive relations of reinforced concrete columns are formulated, the multivariable nonlinear equation formulated in this study is solved by the incremental iterative method, the solution scheme is suitable for computer application, the proposed method bas been compared with the numerical examples and other research results and is shown to be in good agreement Accordingly, the objectives of this investigation are to use the method developed to conduct a parametric study of the different variable (Rotational Restraints,Ratio of End Restraints. End Eccentricity, Ratio of End Eccentricities,Lateral Restraint, Concrete Strength, Ratio of Reinforcement. Yield Point of Reinforcement) influencing the behavior and the ultimate strength for columns. Chosen values for different parameters and their variations are based on values encountered in practice and on results of other analylitical studies.
Many losses of life and extensive damage of social infrastructures have occurred due to moderate and strong earthquakes all over the world. In this research various design parameters have been evaluated to develop a rational seismic design code of rectangular reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers. It was confirmed from this study that the axial force ratio and longitudinal steel ratio were most influencing design parameters on the seismic displacement ductility from experimental results of 54 rectangular RC bridge piers, which were tested at domestic and foregin countries. However, these important parameters are not considered in the confinement steel ratio of Korea Highway Bridge Design Specification(KHBDS). The objective of this study is to propose a rational design provision for the transverse reinforcement of rectangular RC bridge piers. New confinement steel ratio is proposed by reflecting the effect of the axial force and longitudinal steel into the current code of KHBDS. furthermore, minimum transverse confinement steel ratio is also proposed to avoid a probable buckling of longitudinal reinforcing steels of RC bridge piers with a relatively low axial force. New practical code can alleviate the rebar congestion in the plastic hinge region of RC bridge pier, which contributes to construct RC bridge piers in a simple and economic way.

In locations where the cost of concrete is relatively high, or in situations where the weight of concrete members is to be kept to a minimum, it may be economical to use hollow R.C. members. The ductility of circular hollow R.C. columns with one layer of longitudinal and spiral reinforcement placed near the outside face of the section and the steel tube placed on the inside face of the section is investigated. Such hollow sections are confined through the wall thickness since the steel tube is placed. In this study, moment-curvature analyses are conducted with Mander's confined concrete stress-strain relationship. The variables influenced on the ultimate strain is the ratio and yield strength of confining reinforcement and the compression strength for confined concrete. From this ultimate strain - the transverse reinforcement ratio relationship, the transverse reinforcement ratio for circular hollow reinforced columns with confinement is proposed. The proposed transverse reinforcement ratio is confirmed by experimental results.
In general, RC columns are reinforced by spiral or tied steel and a strength of confined concrete is more increased than this of unconfined concrete. And strength and ductility of column are increased by a confinement effect. A confinement effect is affected by concrete strength, spacing, volume and strength of confinement steel. Many researchers suggested various confinement models which reflected these parameters by many experimental results. In this study, a load-strain relationship is evaluated by a confinement model in EC2, and it is compared with Mander model, Saatchioglu-Razvi model and Cusson et al. model. As results, it is appeared that a confinement model in EC2 is able to apply all kinds of concrete strength and a consistency in sectional analysis can be secured using material models in EC2. In parameter studies using material models in EC2, a confinement effect is more affected by a confinement steel than a concrete strength.

This paper estimated the structural behavior of recycled aggregate concrete confined with spiral reinforcement. The main test parameter was designed to be the type of aggregates and the steel ratio of spirals. A total of 18 specimens were cast and tested in this study. All the specimens had a diameter of 150mm and a height of 300mm. The specimens can be divided into two groups, based on the type of coarse aggregate used. The ratio of spiral reinforcement was varied from 0 % to 1.75%. To measure the axial and lateral deformations of the specimens, a total of six linear variation displacement transducers (LVDTs) were installed at each specimen. Furthermore strain gauges were also attached to the steel spirals to obtain the strain of spiral reinforcements. From the experimental results, the structural performance of recycled aggregate concrete specimens confined by steel spirals was similar to that of natural aggregate concrete specimens regardless of the ratio of spiral reinforcement.
The objective of this study is to determine the range of confinement (or the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The range of confinement for transverse reinforcement is related to the location of neutral axis and determined by the magnitude and distribution of compressive strain. The compressive strain depends on the ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, the aspect ratio, configuration, the axial load, and the reinforcement ratios. By affection of flange, the neutral axis appears different depending on positive and negative forces and because of this reason, when web and flange are subjected to compressive stress, the range of confinement for the transverse reinforcement of T-shaped walls would shows different result. Therefore this experimental research focused on the structural characteristics of T-shaped walls and suggested the neutral axis depth through comparing the results of this study with sectional analysis.
