  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift for tall frameworks using composit member subject to lateral loads. To this end, displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of tall frameworks is established and approximation concept that preserves the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Specifically, under the 'constant-shape' assumption, resizing techniqe of composite member is developed. Two types of 50 story frameworks are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

  • The modified arc-length algorithms for the automatic incremental solution of nonlinear finite element equations proposed by Riks are presented, which comprise the cylindrical arc-length method and the normal arc-length method. These methods are developed to trace the nonlinear path of large displacement problems such as a pre and post bucking/collapse response of general structures. These methods are applied to analyse the nonlinear behavior of arch and shell problems in parallel with the standard and modified Newton-Raphson method.

  • Considering the effects of confining pressure, initial shear stress, cyclic stress ratio and number of loading cycles, cyclic triaxial tests are carried out to clarify the soil dynamic properties such as shear modulus and value of material damping of clay under undrained cyclic loading conditions. The results show that no obvious dependency on initial shear stress and effective confining stress are recognized in the shear modulus and damping ratio plotted versus strain. However, the shear modulus decreases and the damping ratio increases with increasing axial strain. When compared with others, it is also revealed that the shear moduli are distributed within the range curves obtained using empirical equations derived by Marcuson et al. (3) and Kokusho et al. (4), and damping ratios are distributed between the curves obtained by Kokusho et al. (4) and Ishihara et al. (9).

  • In the design of plate girder web panels, it is required to evaluate accurately the elastic buckling strength under shear, whether or not the post-buckling strength is accounted for. Currently, elastic shear buckling coefficient of web panels stiffened by transverse intermediate stiffeners are determined by assuming conservatively that web panels are simply supported at the juncture between the flange and web. Although the notion of the real boundary condition at the juncture of the web and the flanges to be somewhere between simple and fixed has been recognized from early days, the boundary condition has been conservatively assumed, mainly due to lack of means to evaluate it in a rational manner. In this paper, a series of numerical analyses and experiments is carried out to provide a simple equation with some parameters especially the flange-web thickness ratio.

  • In this study, more economical than conventional reinforced soil retaining walls, we compared the behavior characteristic about the safety block type numerically for reinforced retaining wall. In this study, reinforced soil retaining wall, first, was integrated a wall putting shear key on the blocks. Second, construction reinforcement focused on the theoretical failure surface was satisfied with the stability of a retaining wall reinforced by a shear plane. when analyzing, element of using reinforcement was carried out a numerical analysis for the cable element and the strip element, and they were analyzed under the conditions according to the stiffener length, distance, with or without shear key. Analysis for the integration of the front wall was reinforced soil retaining walls by installing a larger displacement shear key confinement effect, if reinforced construction and reinforcement with 1 interval and 2 interval, the failure surface was bigger displacement constraints. Generating a deformation amount was smaller than the generation amount of deformation accrued during construction of AASHTO so that it was stable.

  • Underground structures such as a tunnel have been considered as safer than structures on the ground during earthquake. However, severe damages of underground structures occurred at subway tunnel during 1995 Kobe Earthquake and such damages are gradually increased. In this study, a dynamic behavior of a cut and cover tunnel surrounded by weathered soils is investigated using Mohr-Coulomb Model. Parametric study was carried out for boundary conditions, tensile strength, and earthquake magnitudes. The results of numerical analyses in terms of ground deformations and stresses acting on the lining were quite dependent on the side boundary condition (free or fix conditions) and tensile strength of surrounding soils. The ground was deformed upward at the end of earthquake when the side boundary condition was fixed, whereas residual deformations were not predicted when it was free. When the tensile strength of a soil was set to the same as its cohesion, residual deformation was less than 1cm, regardless of side boundary conditions or input accelerations. In addition to that, stress conditions at the maximum deformation and end of earthquake were within an allowable range and considered as safe. Proper boundary conditions and material properties such as tensile strength are quite important because they may significantly impact on the results of dynamic analyses.

  • Progressive collapse is a chain reaction of failures propagating throughout a portion of a structure that is disproportionate to the original local failure. When column members are subjected to unexpected load (compression load), they will buckle if the applied load is greater than the critical load that induces buckling. The post-buckling strength of the columns will decrease rapidly, but if there is enough residual strength, the members will absorb the potential energy generated by the impact load to prevent progressive collapse. Thus, it is necessary to identify the relationship of the load-deformation of a column member in the progressive collapse of a structure up to final collapse. In this study, we carried out nonlinear FEM analysis and based on deflection theory, we investigated the load-deformation relationship of H-section steel columns when both ends were fixed.

  • Bottom plates of empty hold are subjected to not only water pressure but also bi-axial inplane loads, specially in the alternate full loading full loading condition of bulk carrier. This kind of plate behaviours is very difficult to be explained and to be estimated using common buckling design guide in the initial design stage of hull structure, therefore, some more concrete studies for this plate structure was performed based on the currently developed buckling estimation formula. In this buckling formula, torsional stiffness effects of edge stiffener are included additionally and effects of elastic buckling strength of plate panel are treated as characteristic value problem. Also considering boundary stiffener effects and inplane and lateral loading, evaluation of bottom plate scantling using this formula, calculated results using various classification regulation of buckling strength and results of first report approach are compared each other and useful guides using developed formula for bottom plate scantling design are discussed.

  • The bridge piers under service suffered a brittle failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. The earthquake induced lateral force results in tension which causes bond-slip failure at the lap-spliced region in circular bridge piers. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP laminated circular tube. The retrofitted piers using FRP laminated circular tube showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the analytical results on the seismic strengthening effect of circular bridge piers with poor lap-splice details and strengthened with FRP laminated circular tube. FRP's confinement effect is predicted by the classical elasticity solution for the laminated circular tube manufactured with several layers. The FRP laminated circular tube induces the flexural failure instead of a bond-slip failure of the circular reinforced concrete piers under seismic induced lateral forces. To investigate the correctness and effectiveness of analytical solution derived in this study, the analytical results were compared with the experimental data and it was confirmed that the results were correlated well each other, The effects on the confinement of FRP laminated circular tube, such as the number of layers, the fiber orientations, and the mechanical properties, were investigated. From the parametric study, it was found that the number of layers, the fiber orientations, and the major Young's modulus (E11) of the FRP laminated circular tube were the dominant parameters affecting the confinement of reinforced concrete circular bridge piers.
