Toxicity of Copper, Cadmium and Chromium on Survival, Growth and Oxygen Consumption of the Mysid, Neomysis awatschensis (곤쟁이 Neomysis awatschensis와 생존, 성장 및 산소소비에 미치는 구리, 카드뮴, 크롬의 독성)

  • In order to estimate toxicity of copper, radmium and chromium on survival, growth and oxygen consumption of the estuarine mysid, Neomysis awatschensis, adult and juvenile, the experiments were conducted by renewal bioassay method at $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;and\;20{\pm}1\%_{\circ}$ salinity. The $96hr-LC_{50}$ of the mysid exposed to cadmium, copper and chromium was 20.2, 11.3 and $670.4\;{\mu}g/\ell$ in adut and 3.4, 1.9 and $49.4\;{\mu}g/\ell$ in juvenile, respectively, and were ranked in order of toxicity : copper >cadmium >chromium. Survival rates of the mysid exposed to the sublethal concentrations of heavy metals for 40 days were significantly affected by cadmium $\geq1.0\;{\mu}g/\ell$ and copper $\geq0.6\;{\mu}g/\ell$ concentrations. The growth rate of the mysid exposed to $cadmium\geq2.0\;{\mu}g\ell$ and copper $\geq1.2\;{\mu}g/\ell$ concentrations were significantly reduced than that exposed to normal condition, but there was no affect on intermoult period. Oxygen consumption rate of the mysid exposed to heavy metals was significantly reduced with increasing heavy metals concentrations. The results of the present study led us to conclude that concentrations levels cadmium$\geq1.0\;{\mu}g\ell$ and copper $\geq0.6\;{\mu}g\ell$ of the estuarine could markedly affect the distribution and population of the mysid by reduced survival, growth and oxygen consumption rate.

  • 본 실험은 백세주 주정박이 벼의 생육과 토양 비옥도 개선에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 백세주 주정박은 압착된 주박을 재 발효시켜 단식증류기로 증류하여 알코올을 회수 후 발생된다. 실험 처리구는 무시용, 요소, 주정박 처리구로 하였고, 벼 질소비료 표준시비량 11kg N/10a를 기준으로 하여 전량 기비로 사용하였다. 백세주 주정박의 유효성분과 유해성분을 분석하였고, 토양에 주정박을 시용 전 후의 이화학적 분석을 하였다. 벼 실험 품종은 오대벼(Oryza sativa L.)이고, 벼의 생육과 수량 및 미질을 분석하였다. 백세주 주정박의 pH는 3.60, 유기물함량 90.12%, 염농도 0.72ds/cm, 수분함량 88%, 질소 0.21%, 인산 0.24%, 칼리 0.09%로 나타났다. 유해성분(중금속)분석결과 비소 0.03ppm, 크롬 0.09ppm, 구리0.91ppm, 납 0.05ppm, 니켈 0.05ppm, 아연 1.30ppm, 망간 3.28ppm, 철 34.86ppm로 나타났다. 토양이화학적 분석결과 주정박 시용처리구의 유기물함량과 질소 및 인산은 각각 23.0g/kg. 0.11%, 89mg/kg로 무시용과 요소처리구에 비해 유의한 차이를 보였다. 벼 이식 후 140일째 생육분석결과 초장 82.60cm, 옆폭 1.40cm, 옆장 37.70cm, 지상부건물중 59.21g로 다른 2개 처리구에 비해 유의한 차이를 보였다. 벼의 수량은 주정박 시용 처리구가 449.0kg/10a로 무시용 89.66kg/10a와 요소 401.66kg/10a에 비해 유의적인 차이를 보였다. 백세주 주정박 시용을 통해 토양 개량 효과를 기대할 수 있고, 공시 토양의 토양 개량 효과가 벼의 생육에 긍정적인 영향을 끼치는 것으로 나타남에 따라 백세주 주정박의 토양개량제로서의 활용 가능성을 확인하였다.

Effects of Storage Conditions on Qualities of Buttercup Squash (Kabocha) (밤호박의 저장 온도와 습도가 품질에 미치는 효과)

  • To establish the optimum conditions for storing buttercup squash, we examined the effectiveness of several storage methods and the quality of the squash under various storage conditions, including temperature (12 and $20^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity (20, 40, 60, and 80%). The spoiling rate of the squash was affected more by the storage temperature than the relative humidity, and the squash stored at $20^{\circ}C$ started to be deteriorated after 20 days of storage. At $20^{\circ}C$, soluble solid content gradually increased until 20 days of storage, and then it tended to decrease. The L-value had a tendency to increase with days of storage, and the a- and b-value also increased after 40 days. In addition, the color changes were great when the squash was stored at high temperature and high relative humidity. The total pectin content increased until 20 days at $20^{\circ}C$, and then it decreased, but less change was observed in the squash stored at $12^{\circ}C$. Overall, the results showed that storage at $20^{\circ}C$ after field curing resulted in excessive weight loss, color loss and poor eating quality, as well as a high level of decay (approximately 70%) after 40 days. However, the squash stored at $12^{\circ}C$ and 60% RH (relative humidity) showed less degreening and had a reduced level of decay, below 10%.

Effect of Electrode Process Variables in case of Decomposition of $NO_x$ by SPCP (연면방전에 의한 질소산화물의 분해시 전극 공정변수에 대한 영향)

  • For hazardous air pollutants(HAP) such as NO and $NO_2$ decomposition efficiency, power consumption, and applied voltage were investigated by SPCP(surface induced discharge plasma chemical processing) reactor to obtain optimum process variables and maximum decomposition efficiencies. Decomposition efficiency of HAP with various electric frequencies(5~50 kHz), flow rates(100~1,000 mL/min) initial concentrations(100~1,000 ppm), electrode materials(W, Cu, Al), electrode thickness(1, 2, 3 mm) and number of electrode windings(7, 9, 11) were measured. Experimental results showed that for the frequency of 10 kHz, the highest decomposition efficiency of 94.3% for NO and 84.7% for $NO_2$ were observed at the poser consumptions of 19.8 and 29W respectively and that decomposition efficiency decreased with increasing frequency above 20 kHz. Decomposition efficiency was increased with increasing residence times and with decreasing initial concentration of pollutants. Decomposition efficiency was increased with increasing thickness of discharge electrode and the highest decomposition efficiency was obtained for the electrode diameter of 3mm in this experiment. As the electrode material, decomposition efficiency was in order : tungsten(W), copper(Cu), aluminum(Al).

Hair Mineral Analysis of People Suffering from Hair Loss According to Their Age and Gender (연령 및 성별에 따른 탈모 모발의 미네랄 함량 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze 19 kinds of mineral contents in hair targeting 311 people in Seoul who suffer from hair loss. The results are as follows: 1. The average contents of all kinds of minerals were within the standards. 2. Sodium, potassium, and selenium were more detected in men than in women; calcium, magnesium, copper, and manganese were more detected in women than in men; toxic elements, mercury, antimony, and arsenic were more detected in men than in women, which was statistically significant. 3. As the age increased, potassium (p<.05), iron (p<.01), manganese (p<.05), chromium (p<.01), and mercury (P<0.01) increased gradually, which was statistically significant. In particular, the content of mercury exceeded its standard in those over fifty. 4. Selenium (p<.01), lead (p<.05), aluminum (p<.05), and arsenic (p<.01) were more detected in natural hair than in permanent or colored hair. Calcium (p<.001), magnesium (p<.001), and manganese (p<.01) were more detected in permanent or colored hair than in natural hair. They were all statistically significant.

Effects of Pretreatments of PET Substrate on the Adhesion of Copper Films Prepared by a Room Temperature ECR-MOCVD Method (PET 기질의 전처리효과가 상온 ECR 화학증착법에 의해 증착된 구리박막의 계면접착력에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of various pretreatments on the adhesion of copper-coated polymer films were investigated. Copper-coated polymer films were prepared by an electron cyclotron resonance-metal organic chemical vapor deposition (ECR-MOCVD) coupled with a DC bias system at room temperature. PET(polyethylene terephthalate) film was employed as a substrate material and it was pretreated by industrially feasible methods such as chromic acid, sand-blasting, oxygen plasma and ion-implantation treatment. Surface characterization of the copper-coated polymer film was carried out by AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy) and FESEM(Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy). Surface energy was calculated by based on the value of the contact angle measured. The adhesion of copper/PET films was determined by a pull-off test according to ASTM D-5179. It was found that suitable pretreatment of the PET substrate was required for obtaining good adhesion property between copper films and the substrate. In this study the highest adhesion was observed in sand-blasting, and then followed by those of acid and oxygen plasma treatment. However, the effect of surface energy was insignificant in our experimental range. This is probably due to compensating the difference in surface energy from various pretreatments by exposing substrate to ECR plasma for 5 min or longer at the early stage of the copper deposition. Therefore, it can be concluded that surface roughness of the polymer substrate plays an important role to determine the adhesion of copper-coated polymer for the deposition of copper by ECR-MOCVD.

Effect of PCB on the Oocyte Maturation and Proges- terone Production of Frog, Rana dybowskii in Vitro

  • In order to know the effects of PCB(Arochlor 1248) on the oocyte maturation and proges-terone(P$_4$) production by FPH(Frog pituitary homogenate: 0.01 p.e/$m\ell$) of frog in vitro, the oocytes were cultured for 20 hours in presence of the PCB at various concentrations and exam-ined their maturation(germinal vesicle breakdown: GVBD) rates and P$_4$ levels secreted by the oocyte in the culture medium. The results show that PCB concentration of 10 ppb suppressed the maturation of the oocytes and secretion of P$_4$. To examine the reversibility of the inhibitory effects, the oocytes were exposed to the PCB only for 3 hours, and then transferred to plain medium and cultured further for 17 hours. The oocytes were recovered from the toxic effect of the PCB when they were exposed to 2.5 ppb, but not to 5 ppb of the PCB. These results indi-cate that PCB suppress the maturation of oocytes and secretion of p, at low concentration, sug-gesting that the frog oocyte culture system can be used as a useful tool to evaluate the toxicity of the pollutants in the environment.

Catalytic Nitrate Reduction in Water over Mesoporous Silica Supported Pd-Cu Catalysts (중형 기공성 실리카 담체에 담지된 Pd-Cu 촉매를 활용한 수중 질산성 질소 저감 반응)

  • In this study, we investigated the activity of Pd and Cu co-incorporated on mesoporous silica support such as MCM-41 and SBA-15 for catalytic nitrate reduction in water. In pure hydrogen flow, nitrate concentration was gradually decreased with the reaction time, but nitrogen selectivity was too low due to very high pH of reaction medium after the reaction. In order to acquire high nitrogen selectivity, we utilized carbon dioxide as a pH buffer, which resulted in higher nitrogen selectivity (about 40%). For the above reaction conditions, Pd-Cu/MCM-41 showed better performance than Pd-Cu/SBA-15. The physicochemical properties of both catalysts were investigated to figure out the relationship between the characteristics of the catalysts and the catalytic activity on the catalytic nitrate reduction by $N_2$ adsoprtion-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), $H_2$-temperature programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques.

Growth mechanism and controlled synthesis of single-crystal monolayer graphene on Germanium(110)

  • 그래핀(Graphene)은 탄소 원자가 6각 구조로 이루진 2차원 알려진 물질 중 가장 얇은(0.34 nm) 두께의 물질이며 그 밴드구로조 인해 우수한 전자 이동도($200000cmV^{-1}s^{-1}$)를 가지고 있며, 이외에도 기계적, 화학적으로 뛰어난 특성을 가진다. 대면적화 된 그래핀을 성장시키기 위한 방법으로는 화학적 기상 증착법(Chemical Vapor Deposition)이 있다. 하지만 실제 여러 전이금속에서 합성되는 그래핀은 다결정으로, 서로 다른 면 방향을 가진 계면에서 전자의 산란이 일어나며, 고유의 우수한 특성이 저하되게 된다. 따라서 전자소재로 사용되기 위해서는 단결정의 대면적화 된 그래핀에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다. 앞서의 두 문제점 중, 단결정의 그래핀 합성에 크게 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 크게 합성 온도, 촉매 기판의 탄소 용해도, 촉매 표면에서의 탄소 원자의 확산성이 있다. 본 연구에서는 구리, 니켈, 실리콘에 비해 탄소 용해도가 낮으며, 탄소 원자의 높은 확산성으로 인해 단결정의 단층 그래핀을 합성에 적합하다고 보고된 저마늄(Germanium) 기판을 사용하여 그래핀을 합성하였다. 단결정의 그래핀을 성장시키기 위해 메탄(Methane; $CH_4$)가스의 주입량과 수소 가스의 주입량을 제어하여 성장 속도를 조절 하였으며, 성장하는 그래핀의 면방향을 제어하고자 하였다. 표면의 산화층(Oxidized layer)을 제거하기 위하여 불산(Hydrofluoric acid)를 사용하였다. 불산 처리 후 표면의 변화는 원자간력현미경(Atomic force microscopipe)을 통하여 분석하였다. 합성된 그래핀의 특성을 저 에너지 전자현미경(Low energy electron microscopy), 광전자 현미경(Photo emission electron microscopy), 라만 분광법(Raman spectroscopy), 원자간력현미경(Atomic force microscopy)와 투과전자현미경 (transmission electron microscopy)을 이용하여 기판 표면의 구조와 결정성을 분석하였다.

A Study on the Contents of Inorganic Compounds in Soft Drinks (청량음료류 중 무기금속의 함량에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to determine the content of inorganic metals in soft drinks distributed locally in markets.6 trace metals (Fe, Ca, Zn, Na, Mg, and K) were detected in 16 kinds of drinks,80 samples. The average concentration of inorganic metals in vegetable drinks was relatively higher than that of mixed drinks or carbonated drinks. The concentration of calcium, which is advisable inorganic metals for the growth of skeleton and the prevention of osteoporosis, hypertension, was very high and needed to be careful for the consumer who is suffer with lithiasis. Although carbonated drinks are very popular with the children and adolescence owing to the unbalance of the intake of Ca and P, habitual drinking could cause obstruction in skeletal growth and metabolism of Fe, Cu, and Zn. So, it is suggested that more practical study is needed fur the intake of inorganic metals.
