We examined 5120 individuals aged 40 to 64 years who participated in the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with adjustments for demographic variables and health status. This analysis revealed significant associations between needs for scaling and the following: current smoking, no visits to dental clinics, current drinking, non-oral checkups, and non-use of oral care products. As a result of a subgroup analysis, significant factors differed according to gender. As a result of this study, needs for scaling were associated with identified health behaviors and findings about health behaviors that are effective for maintaining and promoting periodontal health in middle-aged people were confirmed.

Chi-squared test was conducted to compare the subjects' general features with the health lifestyle of the patients who needed periodontal treatments. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to confirm the variables that could affect the necessity of periodontal treatments. As a result of verifying the necessity of periodontal treatments according to the general features and health lifestyle, the necessity decreased with the higher income level and education level, and in the cases of nonsmokers, frequent toothbrushing, and using oral hygiene products. When the subjects who did not had oral examinations, their necessity for periodontal treatments significantly increased (p<0.01). The variables that affected the necessity of periodontal treatments included residence, gender, education level, obesity, and oral examinations (p<0.01). Therefore, health lifestyle was thought an important variable that had affected the oral health status. Professional dental hygienists must provide people with action programs of health lifestyle to promote the national oral health status.

  • This study aims to analyze the relationship with oral health status through oral examinations, microorganism tests, and surveys of college students and present basic data necessary for the development of oral health education programs to prevent. Results of students who did not receive brushing education showed high motile activities of microorganism, and there was a significant relationship in which students with a large amount of microorganism subjectively felt more tooth pain. Symptoms of halitosis were greater in the DT, there were differences in the type of bacteria and the amount of bacteria in the MT, and oral health was worse if oral aids were not used in the DMFT index. Therefore, it was confirmed that oral health behavior, subjective oral health awareness, and the amount of microorganism had a significant relationship with oral health status. It will be necessary to develop and share and spread customized oral health education media for each life cycle.
