  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the mouthguard awareness and educational needs for coping methods of oral and maxillofacial trauma in physical education department students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 250 male students in gyeonggido and Jeonbuk province from June, to August, 2015. survey was conducted from June to August, 2015. The students were those who played taekwondo, football, and kendo. Except incomplete answers, 229 data were analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the students, awareness and use of mouthguards, and educational needs for coping methods for oral and maxillofacial injuries. The Cronbach alpha of mouthguard awareness was 0.838, and that of educational needs for coping methods for oral and maxillofacial injuries was 0.843 in the study. Results: Those who wore mouthguards tended to have higher score of awareness and the demand of coping methods for oral and maxillofacial injuries was higher than those who did not. Those who had higher awareness of mouthguards and oral health maintained their good oral health. Conclusions: The mouthguard is very important to protect from the oral and maxillofacial injuries in sports play, it is important to emphasize the mouthguard wearing in the physical education department students.

  • Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF, CCN2) is one of the multi-functional secreted proteins which belong to CCN family of cysteine-rich growth factors. CTGF is known to have pivotal roles in embryonic endochondral ossification but its role in relevance to periodontitis is never been determined. To identify new molecular mediators associated with periodontitis-induced bone resorption, we have analyzed publicly available GEO database and found the markedly augmented CTGF mRNA expression in periodontitis gingival tissues. The existence of CTGF significantly enhanced mature osteoclasts survival which accompanied by reduction in TUNEL-positive nuclei and PARP cleavage. These results may provide another line of evidence the CTGF mediated prolonged osteoclast survival and subsequent increased bone resorption in the periodontitis patients.

  • Natural products are vastly utilized as a source of chemotherapeutic agents for human cancers. Kochia scopraia is traditionally used for the cure of urological and dermatological diseases. Recently, methanol extract of Kochia scoparia (MEKS) has been shown to have anti-cancer activity to various human cancers. However, there is no report demonstrating the anti-cancer activity of MEKS in human mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) cells. In this study, the authors studied the effects of MEKS on the cell proliferation and underlying mechanism in YD15 human MEC cells. MEKS decreased YD15 cell proliferation proven by trypan blue exclusion assay and induced apoptosis, evidenced by cell cycle analysis and western blotting. Autophagy induction by MEKS was verified by western blotting. In addition, MEKS regulated the expression of phosphorylated Akt, phosphorylated p38 and Nrf2 protein. This results can imply that MEKS might be a potential candidate for the treatment of human MEC cells.

  • Overall study was carried out for the patients visiting Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery through Emergency Room in Chonnam University Hospital, from Jan. 1, 1992 to Dec. 31, 1996. Result obtained were as follows ; Male predilection was shown, the male to female ratio being 2.5 to 1. The frequently developing age group were the first 3rd and 4th decade and under the age of 9 was followed. The number of patients for emergency was peak in September and October to 11%. About the causes for emergency, traffic accident was the most, and fall down injury and assault were followed. About the injury lists, facial laceration was preceded and the next facial bone fracture and the tooth injury followed. In the facial bone fracture, fracture in the mandible only was the most, and zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture, and mandible-maxilla complex fracture were followed. when the case of the mandible fracture, symphysis, condyle, angle were marked in succession. 57% was predomunatly ranged in the timea of 18 : 00 to 03 : 00 for the emergency. From injury onset to visiting emergency room, the range of 8 hours to 12 hours was predominant. Above results suggest that urgent patients of oral and maxillofacial area were relatively so high that division of oral and maxillofacial surgery should be established immediately.

  • This study aimed to analyze the correlation between working from home and sleep disorders among domestic workers using data from the 5th Working Environment Survey in 2017. Out of the total 30,108 wage workers, 818 employees work from home and 4,090 work in an office. A random sample of 1:5 pairs, considering gender and occupational group, was selected from these employees as the study subjects. The analysis included personal characteristics, occupational characteristics, work-from-home arrangements, and sleep disorders. Age, education, employment status, years in the workforce, weekly working hours, work-life balance, self-perceived health, depression, and anxiety were all adjusted as potential confounding variables. Conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between working from home (independent variable) and sleep disorder (dependent variable). This analysis aimed to analyze the correlation between working from home and sleep disorder. The analysis revealed that working from home was associated with sleep onset latency disorder OR=3.23 (95% CI=2.67~3.91), sleep maintenance disorder OR=3.67 (95% CI=3.02~4.45), and non-restorative sleep OR=3.01 (95% CI=2.46~3.67), which showed a statistically significant relationship with all three types of sleep disorders. Factors influencing the correlation between working from home and sleep disorders included work-life balance, social isolation, and anxiety.
