We investigated the effects of the CSRR-metamaterial on microstrip comb-line array antennas. Microstrip comb-line array antennas was designed with 12 radiators, gain of 16.09dBi and bandwidth of 0.24GHz in the 24GHz ISM band. The designed antenna had radiation beam perpendicular to the antenna plane, co-polarization gain of 16.09dBi and cross-polarization gain of -10.86dBi. the CSRR-metamaterial increased largely the impedance bandwidth of the antenna from 0.24GHz to 3.6GHz. however as co-polarization gain became 10.08dBi and cross-polarization gain became 14.1dBi, co-polarization was mixed with cross-polarization. And the antenna gain lowered by 1.99dB. On the investigation of the dependence on the split-direction of the CSRR rings, it showed nearly the same characteristics for up-splitted ring used case and down-splitted ring used case. However in the case of arranging up-splitted ring and down-splitted ring in alternation, co-polarization gain decreased to -1.29dBi and cross-polarization gain increased to 13.9dBi, which meant the wave was transited to cross-polarization majority wave.

In this paper, in order to suggest an optimal polarization diversity composition method in indoor radio wave propagation environments, the variation of the cross polarization discrimination(XPD) was theoretically analyzed by a computer simulation and compared to the actual measured data. From the results, it can be seen that the cross polarization discrimination of the case, a circularly polarized antenna was used at the transmitting end as well as the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches were used at receiving end (CV-CH), is lower than that of the case, horizontal polarized antenna at the transmitting end as well as the horizontal and vertical polarized antenna branches at the receiving end(HH-HV), and that of the case, vertical polarized antenna at the transmitting end as well as the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches at the receiving end(VV-VH). In this paper, to get more effective CV-CH polarization diversity composition, the amount of cross polarization discrimination values at the signals received by horizontal polarized antenna is compensated and the polarization diversity effect through the cumulative probability distribution is estimated. From the evaluation results, it was found that the polarization diversity effect was better at the compensated case than at the uncompensated case. On the other hand, it can be known that the polarization diversity effect is getting better as the cross polarization discrimination values are getting lower, and also be known that the effect can be improved if a transmitting antenna is composed of the ellipse polarized antenna by adjusting the axial ratio of the circularly polarized antenna and, a receiving antenna is made up of the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches.

The ITU-R model for cross-polarization, which is accurate enough in real rainfall environments, is proposed in this paper. By comparing this with measurement data and the ITU-R model, we have also derived a prediction model for rain cross-polarization applicable upto millimeter wave band.

In this paper, we design and fabricate a dual liner polarization sinuous antenna with improved cross polarization isolation (XPI). The proposed antenna is composed of four arm radiators for generating dual linear polarization and excited by wideband microstrip balun with Klopfenstein taper structure. Also, two-step cylindrical cavity structure is applied to reduce back radiation. Honeycomb-typed absorbing material is inserted into the cavity to reduce performance degradation by reflected wave. To enhance cross polarization isolation in low frequency band, resistors are adapted between outer arm and the rim of cavity. We confirmed that the fabricated antenna can be applied for polarization measurement due to improved XPI in the low band.

In a small cell base station used in densely populated areas, a dual polarized multiple antenna(MIMO) is mainly used to increase the cell capacity. This paper demonstrates a dual-polarization antenna with high cross-polarization discrimination(XPD) that can improve the capacity of a small cell using a dual polarization multiple antenna (MIMO). By using the symmetric structure and differential feeding, high XPD in all directions is achieved. In addition, a very similar radiation pattern is observed between each polarization. Because of high XPD and similar radiation pattern in all directions, proposed antenna is well adopted for small-cell multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) system. Experimental results shows that the proposed antenna has a bandwidth of 180 MHz (2.51~2.7 GHz), a maximum gain of 4.5 dBi (3.5~4.5 dBi), and a half-power beam width of 85 degrees. In addition, average XPD of 26.4 dB in all directions, more than 13.8 dB increase than previous dual-polarization antennas which use single emitter by using different feeding or selectively use polarization through switching.

In this paper, we consider the capacity improvement of systems exploiting dual-polarized antennas for two-user transmission. To this end, we analyze the upper bounds of ergodic capacities for multicast and unicast data services in the systems, and propose the condition for adjusting the complex cross-polarization discriminations (XPDs) to maximize the ergodic capacities. In addition, we present the adjustment condition of the complex XPDs that can achieve spectral efficiencies close to the maximum ergodic capacities with lower system complexity. Lastly simulation results demonstrate that the systems using the proposed conditions can obtain higher spectral efficiencies than the ones employing different adjustment conditions including the exiting adjustment condition.

Experimental and simulation results are presented on the Aperture-Coupled microstrip patch antennal with U-shaped slot. Experiment and simulation results include impedance bandwidth, copolar and crosspolar-pattern characteristics and gain measurements. Simulation results show the advantages of U-slotted patch antenna comparing with the normal patch antenna. More than 35% impedance bandwidth is obtained with reasonably restricted cross-polar radiation pattern. The U-slotted radiation element fed by aperture-coupling method can be more easily extended to array structure, compared with that fed by coaxial cable.

This paper proposes a novel reconfigurable microstrip antenna based on alternating a perturbation structure to achieve circular polarization diversity. The proposed antenna consists of an annular ring microstrip radiator for simultaneously loading stub and slot perturbations which support right- and left-handed circular polarization senses and two PIN diodes for choosing the operating polarization sense. By controlling the states of two PIN diodes between perturbing slot and stub at one diagonal corner of the radiator, reconfigurable circular polarization senses of the proposed antenna are successfully obtained and alternated. The proposed antenna has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated at 2.4 GHz of S-band for satellite communication system. The simulation and measurement results of the proposed antenna show in good agreement with the reflection coefficients, axial-ratios, realized antenna gains, and radiation patterns.

In this paper, single-feed equilateral triangular microstrip antennas(ETMA) for circular polarization(CP) are designed and studied experimentally. It is demonstrated that by embedding a narrow slot or a cross of unequal slot lengths in the triangular patch circularly polarized radiation RHCP(right-hand circularly polarized wave), LHCP(left-hand circularly polarized wave) of microstrip antennas can easily be achieved using by strategically positioned coaxial single probe feed. And the size of a triangular microstrip patch antenna is smaller than that of a conventional rectangular or circular patch at a given frequency. A single-feed ETMA with a horizontal narrow slot is printed on the substrate of 60 mils thick and the other ETMA with a corss slot of unequal slot lengths is printed on the same substrate. The antenna radiation characteristics are calculated by ENSEMBLE(Ver. 5.0) software, and compared with the experimental results. This results show that the antenna size reduction of about $17%{\sim}2l%$ is obtained as compared to the regular-size CP design.

In this paper, we measured and analyzed cross polarization discrimination(XPD), signal correlation coefficient($\rho$) and received signal level decrease, for the application of polarization diversity scheme in the up-link of microcell environments. We experimented in a dense building area, a dense residence area, a market area, a school area and etc at 1.9 GHz. Cross polarization discrimination (XPD) is about 6~11 dB, signal correlation coefficient($\rho$) is below 0.7 and received signal level decrease is smaller than 3 dB. The results of comparing polarization diversity with space diversity show that polarization diversity gain is about 2~5 dB higher in the various area. As a results, polarization diversity scheme is more effective than space diversity scheme in microcell environments.
