  • This study experimentally investigated the effects of high and low densities of vegetation patches on the flow characteristics in a stream-scale outdoor experimental channel with rooted willows. Stream-scale experiments on vegetated flows were carried out for an emergent condition of vegetation. Vegetation patches were arranged by alternate bar formation and the flows in vegetated and non-vegetated sections were compared. Three-dimensional flow structure was measured by ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) and the vertical distributions of longitudinal velocity were mainly analyzed from the measurements at various points. Flow velocities show different patterns depending on the density of vegetation patches. The difference in flow velocity between in the vegetated and non-vegetated sections appear to large in the dense patches and the flow becomes complicated at the downstream edge of the patch. Despite the upstream flow disturbed by the first patch, the flows over the second patch show the similar pattern.

  • This study assessed the performance of a compact heat exchanger with staggered tube banks for recuperation of high temperature exhaust thermal energy for SOFC fuel cell system. The compact heat exchanger in this study is two pass system which consists of $315{\times}202.5{\times}48.5mm^3$ and 132 tubes of $6.0mm{\Phi}$ for each heat exchanger. From experiments of the 2 pass heat exchanger system, air temperature was increased from $60{\sim}85^{\circ}C$ to $402{\sim}482^{\circ}C$ while gas temperature was decreased from $600^{\circ}C$ to $305{\sim}402^{\circ}C$ according to mass flow rates of 3.9~7.8 g/s. The experimental heat transfer rates of the heat exchanger were compared with CFD numerical solutions with the conventional ${\xi}-NTU$ method. From the comparisons, the following conclusions were obtained. For the heat exchanger system, the relative errors of heat transfer rate by CFD solution were from 7.1 to 27%, and those by ${\xi}-NTU$ method were from 0.6% to 21% compared with experimental data. From the comparisons, it can be said that both of CFD and ${\xi}-NTU$ method almost simulated to experimental data except specific conditions. Pressure drops through air tubes and gas passages were calculated with both of the CFD computation and head loss equations. The differences between them were from 14 to 22%.

  • The errors between track segments or at the cross-over points of shipborne gravity were successfully reduced by applying a cross-over error adjustment technique using satellite gravity. The integration of shipborne and satellite altimeter-implied free-air gravity anomalies after the cross-over error adjustment resulted in a high resolution gravity map which contains both short and long wavelength components. The successful adjustment of the cross-over errors in the shipborne gravity using the satellite gravity suggests that the shipborne gravity can be combined with the satellite anomalies characterized by a stable and long wavelength component. The resulting free-air anomaly map is evenly harmonized with both short and long wavelength anomalies. Thus the corrected anomaly map can be better used for the geological interpretation. Free-air anomalies with more than 140 mGal in total variations generally correspond to the seafloor topographic changes in their regional patterns. A series of gravity highs are aligned from the Korea Plateau to the Oki Island, which are interpreted to be caused by seamounts or volcanic topographies. The gravity minima along the western and southern shelf edge are associated not only with the local basement morphology and thick sediment fill at the continental margin, but also possibly with the crustal edge effect known for passive continental margins. Series of NE-trending linear anomalies are possibly caused by a swarm of volcanic intrusions followed the initial opening of the Ulleung Basin. The linear high anomalies in the Ulleung Plateau are terminated by the straightly NNW-trending anomalies with a sharp gradient in its western boundary which indicates a fault-line scarp. The opposite side adjoined with the fault-line scarp shows no correlation with the fault-line scarp in geometry indicating that the block might be horizontally slided from the north. A gravity high in contrast to the deepening in seafloor toward the northeastern central Ulleung Basin is probably responsible for the thin crust and shallow seated mantle. • Data analysis of groundwater monitoring wells and geostatistical methods are used to identify the local characteristics of sea water intrusion and the range of sea water intrusion at the southeastern coastal area of Busan, Korea. Rainfall and groundwater level of two monitoring wells show a linear correlation because of the direct groundwater recharge by the precipitation. However, rainfall and electric conductivity have the inverse relationship because of the increase of groundwater. Electric conductivity rapidly increased at 24m depth and exceeded 20,000$\mu\textrm{s}$/cm near 26m depth in the monitoring wells. The variations of groundwater level and electric conductivity show that the interface between sea water and fresh water tends to move upward when groundwater level goes down. In the cross correlation analysis, groundwater level versus rainfall represents the largest cross correlation coefficient in 0 time lag but the cross correlation coefficient of electric conductivity versus rainfall is the largest when the time lag is 9 days. This suggests that the fluctuations of groundwater level respond to rainfall in a short time, but the interface between sea water and fresh water respond very slow to rainfall. Horizontal extents of sea water intrusion are estimated to 14 m from the east of Line 1, and 25 m from the southeast end of Line 2 in the inversion of dipole-dipole profiling data of two survey lines. The data of VES by the Schulumberger array in May and July show lognormal distributions. In the kriged apparent resistivity and earth resistivity distributions, the resistivities of July are increased comparing to those of May. This reflects that the concentration of sea water in aquifer is reduced due to the increased groundwater recharge from the rainfall in June and July. In analyzing the vertical and horizontal apparent resistivities and earth resistivity distributions, the geostatistical methods are very useful to identify the variations of earth resistivity distributions at the coastal area.

  • Magnetism of molecular nanomagnet, which attracted a lot of academic attention after the discovery of the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetism, is reviewed. Molecular nanomagnet is metal-organic material in which magnetic ions are regularly located in the organic skeleton. Also, the interaction between the molecules is very small and those molecules form macroscopic molecular crystal in which molecules are residing at the element points in the crystal. Molecular nanomagnets show a lot of interesting features, especially, equivalence of macroscopic magnetic properties and molecular magnetic properties. In this paper, research results on molecular nanomagnet with microscopic tool like NMR are reviewed mainly. The new method to observe the quantum tunneling of magnetization discovered in Mnl2-ac with NMR is shown and the research results on the microscopic aspects of the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization using the new method are shown. Also, the physical aspect of the level crossing effect which has been reported originally with NMR in molecular nanomagnet is reviewed with experiment results. The research results on the molecular nanomagnets will reveal the important information about the limit of the miniaturization of magnetic memory units and give us the basic scientific knowledge which is needed for the application for the quantum computation. Moreover, academically, many quantum mechanical theories which have not been checked the validity can be checked with experiments.

  • The analysis of optimal infiltration path is one of the representative fields in which the GIS technology can be useful for the military purpose. Usually the analysis of the optimal path is done with network data. However, for military purpose, it often needs to be done with raster data. Because raster data needs far more computation than network data, it is difficult to apply the methods usually used in network data, such as Dijkstra algorithm. The genetic algorithm, which has shown great outcomes in optimization problems, was applied. It was used to minimize the detection probability of infiltration route. 2D binary array genes and its crossover and mutation were suggested to solve this problem with raster data. 30 tests were performed for each population size, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000. With each generation, more adoptable routes survived and made their children routes. Results indicate that as the generations increased, average detection probability decreased and the routes converged to the optimal path. Also, as the population size increases, more optimal routes were found. The suggested genetic algorithm successfully finds the optimal infiltration route, and it shows better performance with larger population.

  • With the improvement of medical state, patients' expectations for the most advanced medical equipment are increasing. Particularly, Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) is used as one of the core image diagnosis methods in all clinical area. However, it has been reported that many of patients who go through the examination suffer from anxiety to the severe noise level during the examination. In this study, both the noise reduction evaluation of headsets with sound-blocking materials added to existing sound-absorbing materials and the existence of sound blocking materials as artifacts on the examination image are tested. An MRI test noise is recorded as a speaker by cross-ordination the sound material (sponge) and the sound material (acrylic plate, copper plate, and 3D copper plate) inside the headset made from 3D pring. A quantitative assessment of headsets showed that the average headset value was 81.8 dB. The average dB value of the most soundproof material combination(Copper, acrylic plate, sponge, sponge) headsets on headsets with added charactering material was measured at 70.4 dB, and MRI showed that the copper was diamagnetic substance and excluded. The second most soundproof headset(Sponge, acrylic plate, 3D copper plate, sponge) was measured at 70.6 dB and MRI showed no artifacts. The same simulation of the material printed with a 3D copper PLA containing approximately 40 % copper powder resulted in no artifacts, therefore, the material output as a 3D printing was better suited for use. For MRI related research, the mutual development of 3D printing is highly anticipated.

  • In a genetic algorithm, computer simulations are performed based on the natural evolution process of life, such as selection, crossover, and mutation. The genetic algorithm searches the approximate optimal solution by the parallel arrangement of Schema, which has a short definition length, low order, and high adaptability. This study examined the possibility of improving the efficiency of the optimal solution by considering the characteristics of the building block hypothesis, which are one of the key operating principles of a genetic algorithm. This study evaluated the efficiency of the optimization results according to the gene sequence for the implementation in solving problems. The optimal design problem of the water pipe was selected, and the genetic arrangement order reflected the engineering specificity by dividing into the existing, the network topology-based, and the flowrate-based arrangement. The optimization results with a flowrate-based arrangement were, on average, approximately 2-3% better than the other batches. This means that to increase the efficiency of the actual engineering optimization problem, a methodology that utilizes clear prior knowledge (such as hydraulic properties) to prevent such excellent solution characteristics from disappearing is essential. The proposed method will be considered as a tool to improve the efficiency of large-scale water supply network optimization in the future.

  • In order to replace existing slit type steel plate on the wooden structure joint, the FRP-reinforced laminated plates were produced. Four types of FRP-reinforced laminated plates were produced according to the type of reinforcement and adhesive, and before applying to the joint, the adhesion performance test according to KSF 3021 and KSF 2160 and the Compact Tension (CT) type fracture toughness test specified in ASTM D5045-99 were carried out. As a result of adhesion performance test, all GFRP textile, GFRP sheet, and GFRP Textile-Sheet type FRP-reinforced laminated plates satisfied the requirement of soaking delamination percentage with smaller than 5% based on KS standard. However, aramid type specimen satisfied the standard as the soaking delamination percentage of 4.8% but it did not satisfied the standard as the water proof soaking delamination percentage of 70%. As a result of fracture toughness test, the volume ratio of reinforcement to timber became 23% so that the strength of FRP-reinforced laminated plates increased by two to four times in comparison to the control specimen. It was confirmed that the GFRP Textile-Sheet type specimen was most resistant to the fracture most since the ratio of stress intensity factor compared with that of the control increased to 61% owing to the parallel arrangement of glass fiber to the load. As a result of tensile shear strength test using FRP-reinforced laminated plates and nonmetal dowels, it is about 12% lower than metal connectors.

  • In this paper, a microstrip linear tapered slot antenna is designed. A tapered slot antenna(TSA) has many advantages such as low profile, low weight, easy fabrication, and compatibility with monolithic microwave integrated circuits(MMIC). In addition, it has demonstrated multi octave bandwidth, moderately high gain, and symmetrical E- and H-plane beam patterns. A feed network is implemented with transition between a microstrip and a slot line for the microstrip linear tapered slot antenna. The transition is consist of two sides. One side has a microstrip line, the other side has a slot line. The dimensions of the microstrip and slot line are ${\lambda}_m/4$ and ${\lambda}_s/4$ at the center of the cross section of the microstrip and slot line. In order to get broad bandwidth antenna characteristics, the tapered length is chosen as $4{\lambda}_o$ and termination width is chosen as $1.75{\lambda}_o$. Experimental results show that the microstrip tapered slot antenna has symmetrical E- and H-plane beam patterns with around 5GHz of bandwidth at center frequency of 5.0GHz.
