  • Cross-interferometic synthetic aperture radar (CInSAR) technique from ERS-2 and Envisat images is capable of generating submeter-accuracy digital elevation model (DEM). However, it is very difficult to produce high-quality CInSAR-derived DEM due to the difference in the azimuth and range pixel size between ERS-2 and Envisat images as well as the small height ambiguity of CInSAR interferogram. In this study, we have proposed an efficient method to overcome the problems, produced a high-quality DEM over northern Alaska, and compared the CInSAR-derived DEM with the national elevation dataset (NED) DEM from U.S. Geological Survey. In the proposed method, azimuth common band filtering is applied in the radar raw data processing to mitigate the mis-registation due to the difference in the azimuth and range pixel size, and differential SAR interferogram (DInSAR) is used for reducing the unwrapping error occurred by the high fringe rate of CInSAR interferogram. Using the CInSAR DEM, we have identified and corrected man-made artifacts in the NED DEM. The wave number analysis further confirms that the CInSAR DEM has valid Signal in the high frequency of more than 0.08 radians/m (about 40m) while the NED DEM does not. Our results indicate that the CInSAR DEM is superior to the NED DEM in terms of both height precision and ground resolution.

  • In accommodating the asymmetric traffic for future wireless multimedia services, the dynamic time division duplexing (D-TDD) scheme is considered as one of the key solutions. With the D-TDD mode, however, the inter-BS and inter-MS interference is inevitable during the cross time slot (CTS) period, and this interference seriously degrades the system performance. To mitigate such interference, we propose a region and time partitioning D-TDD architecture for OFDM systems. Each time slot in the CTS period is split into several minislots, and then each cell is divided into as many regions as the number of minislots per time slot. We then assign the minislots only to the users in its predefined corresponding region. On top of such architecture which inherently separates the interfering entities farther from each other, we design a robust time slot allocation scheme so that the inter-cell interference can be minimized. By the computer simulation, it has been verified that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional time slot allocation methods in both the outage probability and the bandwidth efficiency.

  • For TOPS InSAR processing, high-precision image co-registration is required. We propose an image co-registration method suitable for the TOPS mode by comparing the performance of cross correlation method, the geometric co-registration and the enhanced spectral diversity (ESD) matching algorithm based on the spectral diversity (SD) on the Sentinel-1 TOPS mode image. Using 23 pairs of interferometric pairs generated from 25 Sentinel-1 TOPS images, we applied the cross correlation (CC), geometric correction with only orbit information (GC1), geometric correction combined with iterative cross-correlation (GC2, GC3, GC4), and ESD iteration (ESD_GC, ESD_1, ESD_2). The mean of co-registration errors in azimuth direction by cross correlation and geometric matching are 0.0041 pixels and 0.0016 pixels, respectively. Although the ESD method shows the most accurate result with the error of less than 0.0005 pixels, the error of geometric co-registration is reduced to 0.001 pixels by repetition through additional cross correlation matching between the reference and resampled slave image. The ESD method is not applicable when the coherence of the burst overlap areas is low. Therefore, the geometric co-registration method through iterative processing is a suitable alternative for time series analysis using multiple SAR data or generating interferogram with long time intervals.

  • A power line modem(PLM) which transfers data safely through power lines in houses or small offices is considered. When a power line is used for communications, transmitted signals could be affected by the channel characteristics such as frequency-selective fading, interference, and time-varying attenuation. In order to overcome these impairments, a direct sequence(DS) technique which is well known as an effective instrument against a variety of interferences and hostile channel properties is employed. Using a DS technique, however, requires more circuits such as PN code generator circuits, code modification circuits, and complicated synchronization circuits, and it also results in substantial acquisition delay. In this paper, some of these circuits are implemented via software programmed in the system controller, and the complicated synchronization circuits are replaced by simple circuits utilizing a 60 Hz power signal for synchronization. The synchronization ciruits used in this paper virtually eliminate the substantial acquisition delay, and is also designed to free influence of 60 Hz zero crossing jitters which reside in a power signal. As a result, a PLM using a DS technique is realized in the form of wall-socket plug, and the PLM hardware would be very much simplified.

  • A new digital pre-distortion (DPD) technique for closely spaced dual-band signals is proposed. In the system under consideration, dual-band signals are amplified by a single broadband power amplifier (PA) at a transmitter. The PA output is distorted by cross-modulation between the two bands as well as their own inter-modulation distortion. Especially, if the two bands are placed in close proximity to each other, their spectral regrowths due to in-band intermodulation overlap with each other, which degrades DPD performance. To solve this problem, we propose a new DPD technique where the dual-band PA characteristics are estimated first, and then the DPD parameters are obtained from the estimated PA characteristics. By finding the DPD parameters through two steps, pre-distortion can perform well for the closely-spaced dual band signals. The proposed technique is verified through computer simulation. Simulation result shows that the proposed method performs better than the conventional method for closely-spaced dual band signals.

  • This study utilized an analysis method for detecting six microorganisms, such as Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Campylobacter rectus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythus, Treponema denticola, and Prevotella intermedia, triggering periodontal disease, using multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The analysis including internal control was made by dividing the six species into two groups using four fluorescence dyes, and it was verified that there was no interference or cross-reaction between the target species and different kinds of oral microbial species. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted on each microorganism in various samples, such as saliva and the plaque, using the multiplex real-time PCR and comparative analysis between periodontitis patients and healthy people, revealing obvious differences between them.

  • In Wireless Sensor Network, transmission errors are frequently occurred due to the node failure, battery discharge, and interference by objects. Although Directed Diffusion has been considered as a prominent Data-centric routing algorithm, it revealed some weaknesses at this kind of unexpected network errors. In order to address the problem, we proposed a radio-aware routing algorithm for improving reliability of Directed Diffusion in Wireless Sensor Networks. The proposed algorithm is aware of the network status based on the radio information of MAC and PHY layers using a cross-layer approach. The link quality and the node failure information from the acquired network status were used to decide an alternative path to provide a reliable data transmission in error-prone sensor networks. The proposed algorithm showed its effectiveness of the data delivery rate and data ratio with several simulations consisting of various error rates and the number of nodes.

  • On September 3rd 2017, strong artificial seismic signals from North Korea were detected in KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) seismic network. The location of the epicenter was estimated to be Punggye-ri nuclear test site and it was the most powerful to date. The event was not studied well due to accessibility and geodetic measurements. Therefore, we used remote sensing data to analyze surface changes around Mt. Mantap area. First of all, we tried to detect surface deformation using InSAR method with Advanced Land Observation Satellite-2 (ALOS-2). Even though ALOS-2 data used L-band long wavelength, it was not working well for this particular case because of decorrelation on interferogram. The main reason would be large deformation near the Mt. Mantap area. To overcome this limitation of decorrelation, we applied offset tracking method to measure deformation. However, this method is affected by window kernel size. So we applied various window sizes from 32 to 224 in 16 steps. We could retrieve 2D surface deformation of about 3 m in maximum in the west side of Mt. Mantap. Second, we used Pleiadas-A/B high resolution satellite optical images which were acquired before and after the 6th nuclear test. We detected widespread surface damage around the top of Mt. Mantap such as landslide and suspected collapse area. This phenomenon may be caused by a very strong underground nuclear explosion test. High-resolution satellite images could be used to analyze non-accessible area.
