Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of the home-based cancer patient management project of public health centers throughout the country. The results of the investigation is employed to identify obstacles to the execution of the program and, finally, to develop an efficient management program of home-based cancer patients. Methods: Data on the home-based cancer patient management project were collected and analyzed through visiting interviews or telephone interviews with 225 public health centers throughout the country for six months from July to December, 2006. Results: Obstacles to the present execution of the home-based cancer patient management project were identified. Some of them are : (1) patients' low trust in cancer patient management by local health centers, (2) absence of programs customized to local communities, (3) lack of personnel and vehicles for home-based cancer patient management, (4) lack of education program for personnel in charge of home-based cancer patient management, (5) problems in public health doctors, weak connection to private medical institutions, (6) absence of medical institutions and hospice facilities for cancer patients, and (7) non-standardized volunteer workers, so on. Considering all these problems, some effective management methods are proposed. The basic concept is to keep the autonomy and variety of the local helath centers. And based on this concept, three models of (1) public health center controlled model, (2) medical institutions and hospice facilities-entrusted model and (3) medical institutions and hospice facilities-cooperative model are developed. Conclusion: By adopting an adequate model among proposed three models, the public health centers are expected to achieve an efficient utilization of material resources and manpower. In addition, by inventing their own programs that are proper for the local societies, they can improve the home-based cancer patient management.
This study was performed to investigate the information of food preference of workers for meal served by industry foodservice. The subjects were composed of 212 office workers and 220 laborers. The results were obtained as follows : 50.7% of the subjects were 30∼39 years old ; 72.0% of them had high school education ; the type of favored food was Korean style cooked rice ; food taste was the most important point in food selection. Preference form main foods : Cooked rice was preferred the most by the subjects. Both office workers and laborers liked Kalkooksoo and vegetable bread and cooked rice covered with beef was preferred by office workers and cooked rice covered with raw fish pieces was preferred by laborers. Also they disliked Hash rice, Curry rice and rice-cake soup in the pattern. Preference for side-dish : The Acceptances for side-dishes were high in soybean paste soup(office workers : 37.5%, laborers : 31.5%), hot chowder of corvina(26.1%, 25.7%), kimchi stew(30.5%, 28.8%), beef broiled in soy(32.5%, 30.5%), baked fish(32.5%, 31.9%), pachon(20.7%, 25.9%), a meat inside a razor clam(25.1$, 29.2%) and Chinese cabbage kimchi(44.5%, 46.3%), in that order by both of them. But in office workers, seasoned bean sprouts and steamed beef-rib were shown to have high preference and in laborers seasoned spinach and steamed pork-rib were high. Preference of snacks : The preferences for snacks were high in milk(office workers : 50.3%, laborers : 48.5%), Songpean(28.9%, 30.1%), coffee(30.8%, 32.5%), Sikhye(18.8%, 17.5%), in that order by two groups.
Objectives : Firefighters frequently experience traumatic events, high-tension situations and shift work. Therefore, the prevalence of insomnia of firefighters is higher than one of general population. Not only does the quality of sleep affect the satisfaction of personal life, but it also influences their performance for the public's safety. We investigated which factors affect the quality of sleep of firefighters. Methods : After personally delivering 120 questionnaires to 3 fire stations, the survey was conducted when the consents were signed. It inquired about alcohol use, smoking, shift work, sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and experience of traumatic events. We then divided the firefighting officers in two groups according to the quality of sleep and compared the variables examined to conduct the logistic regression analyses according to the results. Results : The poor sleeper group reported a higher level of current alcohol consumption, depression, anxiety and experience of traumatic events. Logistic regression analyses showed that the current alcohol intake (Crude odds ratio=3.707, 95% confidence interval=1.288-10.672, p=0.015 ; Adjusted odds ratio=3.288, 95% confidence interval=1.011-10.694, p=0.048) has a significant effect on sleep quality. Conclusions : Current alcohol consumption, depression, anxiety and experience of traumatic events were respectively associated with sleep quality of firefighters. When all significant factors considered, the current alcohol use was the only statistically significant. To improve the quality of sleep for firefighters, it will be necessary to evaluate alcohol intake, educate the poor sleep quality caused by alcohol, and provide specific interventions to reduce consumption.

The objective was to know if chinese cabbage growers in Gangwon alpine farmland control agricultural pests including weeds effectively and use pesticide properly. Examiners visited 185 farmers at Taebaek, Pyongchang, and Jeongseon and surveyed 33 questions on pest control methods pesticide use. Chinese cabbage farmers have noxious plant diseases such as clubroot, bacterial soft rot, downy mildew, anthracnose, and mosaic disease, and also noxious insects such as diamondback moth, aphid, beet armyworm, common cabbage worm, and Japanese native slug. In addition, farmers have noxious weeds such as common chickweed, marsh pepper, hairy crabgrass, common purslane, and horseweed. To control diseases and insects, 51.3% of farmers used many chemical agents, while 20.7% of farmers used chemical agents with too much emphasis on paraquat and glyphosate to control weeds: 87.2% of the answered farmers have a preference of the both non-selective herbicides. Farmers in the survey area selected pesticides on the basis of their own experience and sales managers' recommendation (84.2%) which results in the use of inappropriate pesticides such diniconazole. Many farmers have experienced phytotoxicities (46.7%) and pesticide poisoning (51.2%). We conclude that a systematic educational program for the proper selection and use of pesticides should be conducted for chinese cabbage growers in Gangwon alpine farmland.

The objective was to know if seed potato farmers in Kangwon alpine area control weeds effectively and use herbicides properly to control weeds. Seed potato farmers in Pyongcbang, Hoengsong, and Kangnung have noxious weeds, such as marsh pepper, lambsquarters, barnyard grass, mugwort, asiatic dayflower, hairy carbgrass, ladysthumb, common chickweed, field horsetail, and common purslain, in their farmyard. These are controlled by a combination of physical and chemical weed control methods. However, several weeds such as marsh pepper, field horsetail and, mugwort are poorly controlled by 2-fold amount of several herbicides, including paraquat, pendimethalin, and metribuzin (58% of the answered). Herbicides are not selected and used in a proper manner by seed potato farmers: most of farmers selected herbicides by their experience (51% of the answered) and dealers recommendation (34% of the answered), while only a few farmers of the answered took advantage of the Farmers Handbook for Herbicide Application. In addition, the selected herbicides, including non-registered ones such as paraquat and fluazifop-butyl, are applying three to five years in a succession. With these improper selection and usage of herbicides, sixty-seven percent of the answered farmers have experienced crop damage and seventy-five percent have poisoning. We conclude that a systemic educational program for the proper selection and use of herbicides is needed for seed potato farmers in Kangwon alpine area.
The present study aims to monitor pesticide residues in cut flowers collected from the farms and markets. Cut flowers used in this study included rose, lily and chrysanthemum collected from June to September, 2008. Samples were collected once from farms in Hwasung, Goyang (Gyeonggi-do), Inje (Gangwon-do) and thrice from wholesale market in Namdaemunm, Yangjae and Gangnam (Seoul). Total of 24 pesticides (12 fungicides, 11 pesticides and 1 acaricide) were detected from samples collected from farm and total of 64 pesticides (25 fungicides, 36 pesticides, 1 acaricide and 2 fungicides) were detected from samples collected from wholesale market. The highest detection frequency of pesticide from farm was for carbaryl (15%) and for boscalid, fluacrypyrin, fluquinconazole, methomyl, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrohin (10%), with overall detection of $0.1-36.99\;mg\;kg^{-1}$. While the highest detection frequency of pesticides from wholesale market was for carbaryl, fluquinoconazole and kresoxim-methyl (18.52%), methomyl (16.6%), and methiocarb and thiacloprid (12.96%) with overall detection amount of $0.1-56.2\;mg\;kg^{-1}$. Higher amount of pesticides were detected in leaves than in flowers. Among the pesticides detected, detection frequency of unregistered pesticides for rose, chrysanthemum and lily was 55%, 60% and 63% collected from farms and 47%, 60% and 89% collected from markets, respectively. These pesticides require registration and further monitoring in floricultural crops.

The objective of this study was to evaluate associations of dietary sodium (Na) intake with salt-related dietary behaviors of 218 university students (95 men; 123 women) living in Gyeonggi area. Dish frequency questionnaire (DFQ) was used to identify salt-related dietary behaviors and to determine Na intakes. In men, systolic & diastolic blood pressures, Na intakes and DFQ-15 scores were significantly higher than in women. High-salt intake group (HS), classified by DFQ-15, had higher scores of high-salt dietary attitude and more Na intakes than low-salt intake group (LS). HS took protein foods and had balanced diets less frequently than LS (p<0.05). HS had fried dishes & fatty meats, and added salt to dishes more frequently (p<0.05). HS and LS had differences in preference of soy-boiled and Chinese or Japanese foods, in intake frequency of bean-paste soup, in use of soy sauce with fried food or raw fish, and in salt addition to dishes at the table (p<0.05). HS, classified by Na intakes, had high-salt dietary attitudes such as preference of seasoned rice & soy-boiled foods and habitual addition of soy sauce or salt to dishes at the table. The subjects using food labels when purchasing had better salt-related attitudes & behaviors, and lower DFQ-15 scores & Na intakes than the non-users (p<0.01). Self-assessed HS (SHS) had worse salt-related attitudes and behaviors (p<0.05). Male self-assessed LS (SLS) had higher Na intakes, which indicated that self-assessment of salt preference did not actually reflect Na intake. In summary, male university students belonged to a high-risk group of salt intakes, and HS preferred soy-boiled foods or fatty dishes, frequently added salt to dishes and rarely had balanced diets. These results suggest that nutrition education programs for university students should include fundamental dietetics and a balanced diet, in addition to a low-Na diet.
The study was conducted to develop an effective forest resources use models for an alternate use of abandoned quarry by an attitude survey. According to the result of survey, a pessimistic view due to dust, noise pollution, and forest damage was 5% higher than an affirmative view by economic benefits from the development of quarry. The 42% of the respondents preferred the alternate use of abandoned quarry and the 25% of the respondents wanted an art and cultural space. The optimum size of alternate use was 5-10 ha (43%) with the requirement of nearby residents (32%). According to the SWOT analysis for abandoned quarry, the strength factors were an effective use of land, the content development of modern industrial inheritance + cultural and art fusion, attraction for nearby city and visitors, a harmony of beauty landscape and clean environment, and a sustainable increase of domestic and foreign visitors with the 5-day-work week. The opportunity factors were the improvement of traffic networks through KTX and local highway, the creation of the new growth engines with the establishment of artistic creation belts, the providing of unique cultural and art space through grafting of tour and education, the creation of local income through stone processed goods, and the vitalization of local development through eco-city. The weakness factors were a psychological remoteness and backwardness, and the weakness of staying tour infra. The threat factors were a poor financial support for sustainable development in nearby quarry and a modify of legal and institutional system for the alternated use of abandoned quarry. The developed restoration models for the alternate use in abandoned quarry are classified to a sculpture park, a waterfall and lake park, a rock-climbing, a sports park + forest park, a native botanical garden, a culture and art park, a complex park, a water storage site, a water storage site to extinguish forest fire, a geriatric hospital, an agricultural facility, and a school site types etc. The results suggest that the alternate use in the abandoned soil and stone quarry is needed to establish facility use models with consideration of user's preference.

Previous studies of the caffeine consumption pattern were limited primarily to beverages containing caffeine. Therefore, this study examined the caffeine consumption patterns and levels in beverages and foods containing caffeine among high school students (n=310) in the Yongin region. The participants included 171 boys (55.2%) and 139 girls (44.8%). The daily mean caffeine intake of the respondents was 41.27 mg (0.651 mg/kg) and 36.47 mg (0.696 mg/kg) in boys and girls, respectively. Among the caffeinated food groups, coffee had the highest caffeine intake group in both boys (18.95 mg) and girls (26.28 mg). Girls consumed large amounts of caffeine in the form of Americano-style coffee (20.04 mg), whereas boys consumed more canned coffee (6.77 mg) than girls (2.43 mg, P<0.01). Carbonated soft drinks were the second most prevalent source of caffeine intake in both groups, even though boys (14.29 mg) consumed larger amounts of caffeine than girls (5.85 mg, P<0.001). Multiple regression analysis investigating the major contributing food group to daily total caffeine intake also showed that the highest standardized coefficient was in coffee regardless of gender (boys 0.492, P<0.001 and girls 0.944, P<0.001), followed by carbonated soft drinks and energy drinks. Approximately 95% of high school students consumed normal levels of caffeine, whereas 3.5% of boys and 5.8% of girls consumed excessive amounts based on the standard limit of Korea Food and Drug Administration (<2.5 mg/kg/d) for adolescents. The daily mean caffeine intake of the excess group was 5.38 mg/kg and 6.96 mg/kg in boys and girls, respectively. Consequently, safe daily caffeine intake needs to be determined throughout continuous national management guidelines and nutritional education.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the patients' satisfaction with the quality of hospital food service in Busan area. For the purpose, questionnaires were distributed to 271 hospitalized patients in 4 hospitals (three hospitals for self-operated foodservice, one for contracted foodservice) within 130 beds. The average scores were -0.99/5.00 for quality satisfaction of meal characteristics, -0.68/5.00 for service characteristics, and -0.37/5.00 for nutrition characteristics. The items of low scores in quality satisfaction were treatment of complaints, nutrition of meals, provision of nutritional information, the seasoning of the meals, selective menu, and sanitation of the meals. At the expectation and perception grid, high expectation and high perception items were cleanliness of employees' clothes, cleanliness of dish, employees' courtesy, exactness of meal time, and sanitation of the meals. High expectation and low perception items were treatment of complaints and nutrition. The patients with little appetite showed significantly (p<0.01) lower average scores in meal, service, and nutrition characteristics than those with much appetite. The self-operated foodservice operation had significantly (p<0.01) higher average scores in meal, service, and nutrition characteristics than those of the contracted foodservice operation. The patients hoped to improve the taste of cooked rice and side dish, quantity of the side dish, variety of menu, and sanitation of the meals.
