  • The dynamic behavior of a steel bridge crossed by the Korean High Speed Train(KHST) has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The bridge is a 2-girder simply supported steel bridge which has 40m of span length. A set of experimental tests were performed during operation of KHST, and 13 accelerometers and 6 LVDTs were utilized for measurement of dynamic responses. Numerical analyses considering bridge-structure interaction were performed for validation of experimental results. Since structural type and dynamic characteristics of the bridge differ from those of the representative concrete box bridge, dynamic behavior of the concerning steel bridge shows differences, but dynamic performances are all satisfying specification requirements.

  • In general, deflection limit criteria of bridge design specifications would have been considered based on the static serviceability and structural stability. Dynamic serviceability induced from bridge vibration, as a comfort limit, actually has not been included in the criteria. Thus, it is necessary for dynamic serviceability to be considered in bridge vibration problems and for comfort limit on vibration to be needed for evaluating dynamic serviceability of bridges. In this paper, comfort limits of bridge structures considering the time duration exposed by vibration were examined with frequency and time dependent comfort limits, and they were evaluated by using the vibration signals measured from the existing bridges. Therefore, it is resulted that the time-dependent comfort limit considering the duration of vibration is an efficient estimate for evaluating dynamic serviceability of bridges.

  • This paper represents the results carried out to determine the dynamic response characteristics of Korea High Speed Rail(KHSR) bridges. The responses of the KHSR bridges subjected to the moving train loading are obtained through the simplified method for the 2-dimensional train/track/bridge interaction analysis in which the eccentricity of axle loads and the effect of the torsional forces acting on the bridge are included for the more accurate train/track/bridge interaction analysis. The results of the analyses are compared with the field test data to verify the performance of the 2-dimensional train/track/bridge interaction analysis method.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the algorithm for dynamic interaction analysis of submerged floating tunnel and vehicles. The dynamic behavior characteristic of submerged floating tunnel is certainly different with general structures, because the submerged floating tunnel is floating in the middle of water, and subjected to constant buoyance. Therefore the analyses in various aspects should be carried out to secure structural stability and practicality of structures. To conduct the dynamic interaction analysis, the structure is modeled by commercial FEM program ABAQUS to investigate modal characteristic. Also the added mass concept is applied to represent the inertial force by a fluid, and then dynamic interaction analyses are conducted with superposition method when the KTX is moving along the submerged floating tunnel. And the time histories are presented for vertical and lateral displacement at the center of the tunnel.

  • In this study, based on shaking table test results on a seismically isolated bridge model, an inelastic numerical model is refined by using Bouc-Wen model representing the hysteretic behavior of isolators. Seismic responses of isolated bridges are numerically investigated varying with relative stiffness ratio(RSR), which is a ratio of the effective stiffness of isolator to the lateral stiffness of bridge pier, From the results, it is found that an adequate range of relative stiffness ratio could be defined for seismic design of isolated bridges without considering the flexibility of piers.

  • This study presents the vibration excitation system to extract the aerodynamic stability derivatives which is generally called as flutter derivatives in civil engineering. The system consists of the excitation part to give a forced harmonic motion to the model and the sensing part to measure the aerodynamic forces as well as inertia forces acting on a bridge model. A data processing algorithm for extracting the flutter derivatives from the measured forces is also presented. From the wind tunnel tests, verification of present system was done by comparing the measured and analytical results for rectangular shaped model. The effects of excitation frequencies and amplitudes on flutter derivatives are discussed. Five kinds of actual bridge model were presented from the wind tunnel.

  • This paper addresses the results of experimental and analytical study on the effects of dynamic interaction between vehicle and bridge on modal properties of bridge. Based on ambient vibration test and vehicle impact test on a bridge, it is found that the natural frequencies of bridge are varied by vehicle passing. Analytical studies for the effects of vehicle position, speed, damping, mass ratio and frequency ratio on bridge-vehicle interaction are carried out using complex eigenvalue analysis and numerical integration in time domain. The results show that vehicle properties except speed cause significant change of natural frequency as well as damping of bridge.

  • During the passage of the train, the railway bridge undergoes vibration and noise. The noise of railway bridge can be occurred from various sources. The wheel-rail contact, noise from machinery parts, structural-borne noise, pantagraph noise and aerodynamic noise of the train work in combination. Running train is one of the most important factors for railway bridge vibration. The repeated forces with equidistant axles cause the magnification of dynamic responses which relates with maintenance of the track structure and structure-borne noises. The noise problem is one of the most important issues in services of light rail transit system which usually passes through towns. In the present study, The vibration and noise of the LRT bridge will be investigated with utilizing dynamics responses from moving train as input data for noise analysis.

  • In this study, ambient vibration tests are carried out to replace the current bridge integrity assessment using controlled vehicle test, which requires the traffic control and may induce public complains. Ambient vibration tests and output-only modal identification can be very effective approach to evaluate the bridge integrity because the ambient vibration tests can be performed very easily without trafnc control. The bridges in test road of Jungbu Inland Highway were tested and the results are discussed here.
