The aim of this study was to investigate the level of depression among female hospital nurses and the influence of rotating shift work and quality of sleep on depression. A total of 295 nurses in Seoul were recruited and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The number of depressed nurses was 71.2%(CES-D total score ≥ 16) and factors influenced on nurses' depression were quality of sleep, rotating shift work, and work experience in nursing(1-2.9 years, more than 10 years). Based on the result of this study, nurse managers and hospital organization should use appropriate interventions to improve quality of sleep and negative effects of rotating shift work for nurses.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of shift work on psychological, physical and social adjustment in nurses. Methods: Two hundred ninety-nine female nurses(179 shift worker, 120 non-shift worker) filled out a questionnaire, which consisted of fifty-six items including demographic characteristics. Subjective ratings of psychological, physical, social and sleeprelated distresses were assessed with a visual analogue scale(100mm). Results: Shift work exerted significantly negative impacts on all psychological, physical, social and sleep-related variables of the shift work nurses. The subjective perception about psychological and physical health of shift work nurses was significantly negative as compared to that of non-shift work nurses. Shift work nurses complained of more shift work related social dysfunction and limited social activity. Shift work nurses were also suffering from significant sleep difficulties as compared to non-shift work nurses. Conclusions: This study suggests that shift work can exert a negative impact on psychological and physical health of nurses as it can cause disturbances of the normal circadian rhythms of the psychophysiological functions, beginning with the sleep-wake cycle. Shift work can also cause difficulties in maintaining the usual relationships both at family and social levels. These results may suggest that we need appropriate coping strategies to overcome adverse effects of shift work.

This study aimed to understand shift-working married female nurses' the experience of work-family balance and the special situational context of shift work. Interviews were conducted with 10 married female nurses working shifts to explore their in-depth inner lives, and the collected data were analyzed by Giorgi's phenomenological method. As a result of the analysis, a total of 120 semantic units, 16 sub-components, and 5 components of 'recognition of the reality of work-family balance due to shift work', 'difficulty of work-family balance', 'motor of work-family balance', 'satisfaction factor in job performance', and 'challenges to be solved' were found. This study was significant in that it provides empirical evidence for the development of sophisticated strategies to reconcile work-family life for working-shift married female nurses, through an in-depth exploration of their experiences in work-life balance.

This study was a descriptive study to identify the effect of health promoting behavior on fatigue and depression and to investigate these levels among nurses. Data were collected from September 19th 2012 to September 25th 2012 by questionnaires from 243 hospital nurses of 3 hospitals in Kyungsang-Bukdo. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, ANCOVA, and Stepwise multiple regression. The result showed that in health promoting behavior, shift nurses had higher scores than it of non-shift nurses. The health promotion behavior predictors of fatigue were spiritual growth and stress management and the predictors of depression were physical activity and interpersonal relationship. This results suggest that development of professional health promoting program which is strengthened these parts of spiritual growth, stress management, physical activity and interpersonal relationship, is needed.
The purpose of study is to measure nurses' empathy levels and to examine the effects of their empathy levels on their life and job satisfaction. The questionnaire was administrated to 150 nurses working in hospitals in Busan. The questionnaire consists of three factors : empathy level, life satisfaction, and job satisfaction. Nurses are classed into two : shift work nurse and non-shift work nurse by their work type. 144 out of 150 questionnaires were used for the analysis with IBM SPSS Statistics 21. The shift work nurses with higher empathy levels showed higher job satisfaction. The non-shift work nurses with higher empathy level revealed higher life satisfaction. Interestingly, while empathy level had positive effects on shift work nurses' job satisfaction(${\beta}=.282$, p=.006), it also had impact on non-shift work nurses' life satisfaction positively(${\beta}=.252$, p=.048). As results show, nurses' life and job satisfaction were positively related to their empathy levels. Given the fact that lack of nurses' empathy often lead to conflicts with patients, in order to improve nurses' job performance, we need a new perspective of understanding the important role of empathy in nurses' job satisfaction and life satisfaction.
The purpose of this study is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the experiences of shift nurses who are pregnant while on duty. The specific research question is, 'What is the meaning of pregnancy experienced by a shift nurse?' For this study, six nurses with experience working at a general hospital while pregnant participated. Data was collected through individual in-depth interviews and analyzed by van Manen's phenomenological methodology. The result of the study uncovered 8 themes and 4 essential themes. The essential themes were 'Difficulty feeling free to conceive'; 'Becoming more conscious of coworkers'; 'Concern about the health of the fetus'; and 'Requirement for effective measures.' The results of this study are significant in providing a convergent understanding of the pregnancy experiences of shift nurses.
The purpose of this study is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of shift nurses' mealtime experience on duty. This study was explored by hermeneutic phenomenological analytic method suggested by van Manen. The participants were shift nurses at two general hospitals in Korea. Six participants were interviewed until information reached saturation point. Data was collected through individual in-depth interviews. The results of study were emerged 7 themes. Each theme was :'Forgetting hunger.', 'Fatigue takes precedence over hunger.', 'Feeling sorry and becoming conscious of other colleagues.', 'Inhale the meal in a short time.', 'Conflicting between responsibility for the patient body and my body', 'They want look for freedom and right through their mealtime.', 'Hope that mealtime is a precious time.' The results of this study are significant in providing a convergence understanding of the working environment of the shift nurses.

This study was conducted to analyze the relationship between sleep quality, stress response, physical activity and sleep hygiene in shift work nurses and identify factors influencing sleep quality. The participants were 168 shift nurses from university hospitals and general hospitals located in C city, Gyeongnam. Data were collected from March 25 to 31, 2016. The study instrument use to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Stress Response Inventory, Korean version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form and Sleep Hygiene Scale. Date were analyzed by frequency, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression using SPSS/win18.0. The sleep quality index was 7.35 (range 0-21), stress response was 2.20 (range 1-5), physical activity was 3986MET-min/week, and sleep hygiene was 2.73 (range 1-6 points). There were significant differences in sleep quality according to shift work experience, health status and circadian rhythm type. Factors influencing sleep quality included shift work experience, sleep hygiene, stress response and physical activity, which together explained 40% of the total variance of sleep quality. Therefore, it is recommended that sleep hygiene education be implemented as a strategy to reduce stress response, and that shift work nurses engage in a moderate level of physical activity to improve their sleep quality.

This study was conducted to identify the relationship between sleep quality, stress, depression, and eating attitudes of shift work nurses, and to determine the influencing factors of eating attitudes. Participants were 152 shift work nurses working at a university hospital and data collection was performed from July 1 to July 20, 2021. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. In this study, the prevalence of abnormal eating attitudes at clinical and sub-clinical levels was 7.9% and 19.1%, respectively. There was a positive correlation between eating attitudes and depression, and the influencing factors of eating attitudes were alcohol drinking(1 time/month) and depression. Therefore, it is necessary to find strategies to prevent depression in order to improve the eating attitude of nurses working in shifts, and repeated research on the relevance of alcohol drinking and eating attitudes is needed.
