  • The purpose of this study is to review the trend in comparative education research related to curriculum published in the Korean Journal of Comparative Education, and to critically analyze its characteristics from the postcolonial perspectives. In this study, I analyzed 61 articles published in this journal from 1995 to 2016. The result showed that comparative studies related to curriculum were conducted mainly by benchmarking policies or contents related to curriculum and textbooks of Western countries including North America and Europe as well as Japan which colonized Korea. In addition, although Korea has been changing into multicultural society, studies on Asian countries such as China and Vietnam which are the nationalities of many foreigners living in Korea were rare. Based on the results, this study suggested that the expansion of comparative education research subjects, overcoming of coloniality in comparative education, and ontological reflection of comparative education researchers are necessary.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the structure and contents of the articles in the Journal of Korean Home Economics Education Association to review the research trends during the last decade since 2009. In total, 354 articles from 10 volumes, 40 journal books, were analyzed. This amount to 42.3% of total articles in the JKHEEA for the past 30 years. The results showed that the number of articles in the journal continuously decreased by approximately 5 articles each year. More than half of articles were co-authored as a joint-research between professors and teachers or graduate students. The numbers of pages, tables, figures, and references vary greatly among of the articles published in the JKHEEA. The reviewers and authors would need to check if the pages, tables/figures, or references are indispensable, especially in case there are extremely large number of them. Even though survey research with students as participants is still the most common types of research among recent articles, its percentage is decreasing and diverse research methods such as the analysis of textbook or curriculum literature are being used. Also, research integrating the pedagogy and educational content, and in turn developing and evaluating educational programs is increasing, which indicates that the journal identity has become better-defined. It is advisable that authors select the key words that are more relevant to the title, purpose, and research questions. It is expected that the journal revises the publication regulations so that the issues discussed in this study may be reflected.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the multi-faceted understanding and issues of science subject matter competencies from the trends of competency-based curriculum discourse, and to examine the relationship between general core competencies and science subject matter competencies. First, we examined the theoretical background of competency-based curriculum focusing on behaviorism, humanism, and its comprehensive synthesis. After that, we reviewed OECD's competency-related projects (DeSeCo; OECD Education 2030), US Next-Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Korea's 2015 Revised National Curriculum from the viewpoint of competency-based curriculum. After that, we summarized and systematically analyzed a list of competencies, 105 general core competencies and 45 science subject matter competencies proposed by 15 important documents from home and abroad. The results of this study are as follows: First, the issues of the proper number, appropriate dimension, and how individual competencies should be unique and independent were pointed, in terms of defining and categorizing competencies. Second, it was suggested that the competency items are presented in various dimensions such as personal-micro dimension, community meso-dimension, and social-macro dimension. Meso-dimension was placed on both general core competencies and subject matter competencies. Third, in the relationship between general core competencies and subject matter competencies, the former emphasizes macro-dimension, and the latter emphasizes micro-dimension, revealing an existing gap, and where the two can meet each other is the meso-dimension. These discussions are thought to provide insight into the understanding of competencies in the national curriculum, including the 2015 Revised National Curriculum.

  • This study analyzed the research papers published in three (2 domestic and 1 foreign) journals, in order to understand the recent trend of chemistry education research. We selected Journal of the Korean Chemical Society (JKCS) and Journal of the Korean Association for Science Education (JKASE) as the domestic journals, and Journal of Chemical Education (JCE) as a foreign journal. The papers published from 2000 to 2009 were analyzed. As the result, the chemistry education research theme focused on 'teaching method and education technology', 'learner's characteristics', and 'chemical concept and experiment' in the order of frequency. The research on 'curriculum and textbooks' was performed often in JKCS reflecting Korean social environment. The most researched chemistry education goal was the 'conceptual understanding/change' followed by 'achievement/grade' in JCE and 'experiment/inquiry skill' in JKCS, and 'attitude/interest/motivation' in JKASE. The research subjects were focused to 'middle or high school students' in JKCS, in contrast to the 'university students' in JCE. More concern to the higher education is required in the domestic research. The most frequently used research method was 'survey/ examination' followed by 'experimental research' in JCE and JKASE and 'data/material analysis' in JKCS. We discussed the implication on future chemistry education research.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine current state of curriculum research and research methods used in the research in Korea. Results from the review of peer-reviewed research articles suggest that the ways in which the research studies on curriculum in Korea sorted out issues seemed to heavily concentrate on the written and intended curriculum by means of a document analysis. The topics of curriculum studies were biased in the studies of intended curriculum, and a significant number of curriculum studies were related to elementary levels. Regarding the research methods, the findings showed that many studies on mathematics curriculum have focused on national curriculum, textbooks, and curriculum materials, document analysis are the most frequently used methods in the studies of mathematics curriculum. We finally suggest pursuing various research topics and issues on curriculum, balancing weigh on the written and enacted curriculum, and deeper analysis and investigation of textbooks.

  • The study aims to reflect the elementary school geometry education based on the Realistic Mathematics Education in the Netherlands in the light of the results from recent researches in geometry education and the direction of geometry standards for school mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in order to induce implications for improving korean geometry curriculum and textbook series. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper reflects the history of elementary school geometry education in the Netherlands, sketches the elementary school geometry education based on the Realistic Mathematics Education in the Netherlands by reflecting general goals of the mathematics education, the core goals for geometry strand of the Netherlands, and geometry and spatial orientation strand of Dutch Pluspunt textbook series for the elementary school more concretely. Under these reflections on the documents, it is analyzed what is the characteristics of geometry strand in the Netherlands as follows: emphasis on realistic spatial phenomenon, intuitive and informal approach, progressive approach from intuitive activity to spatial reasoning, intertwinement of mathematics strands and other disciplines, emphasis on interaction of the students, cyclical repetition of experiencing phase, explaining phases, and connecting phase. Finally, discussing points for improving our elementary school geometry curriculum and textbook series development are described as follows: introducing spatial orientation and emphasizing spatial visualization and spatial reasoning with respect to the instruction contents, considering balancing between approach stressing on grasping space and approach stressing on logical structure of geometry, intuitive approach, and integrating mathematics strands and other disciplines with respect to the instruction method.
