Effect of Tuber Size, Bud and Tuber Removal, Tuber Cutting on Growth of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi (괴경(塊莖)의 크기 및 절제(切除)가 올방개의 생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was examined for the effect of tuber size, bud and tuber removal, and tuber cutting on growth of Eleockaris kuroguwai Ohwi. Elongation of plumule and radicle, and the weights of tuber, rhizome and shoot were increased as tuber size is large. The weights of shoot and tuber reduced by bud planting without tuber at 15 days after budding, however number of tubers were increased compared with normal tuber. When cross-cutting tubers were seeded, the weights of shoot, rhizome and tuber were produced as 84%, 85%, 71%, respectively compared with normal tuber, and the number of tubers was not influenced. The weights of tuber, rhizome and shoot were lowed as the bud removal, and there were a great number of tubers at bud removal of 15 days after budding. Tuber of E. k, contained as nonfibrous 78.9gr, phosphorous 77mg, iron 16.8mg, niacin 1.3mg per 100gr edble portion. The positive correlations were observed between shoot weight and tuber weight, and number of tubers.

  • To study the effects of temperature, day length, and various plant growth regulator treatments on the tuber formation of Irish cobbler, this experiment was carried out with 2 combinations of day-length and temperature and 11 kinds of growth regulator, including GA, and their combinations. For the tuber formation, low temperature-short day condition played decisive role, and exceeded the effects of growth regulators. 4 times foliar application of 10 ppm GA resulted marked elongation of stolon but did not inhibit the tuber formation even under high temperature longday condition.

  • Difference in sensitivity of Eleocharis kuroguwai tubers to bensulfuron- methyl{methyl 2-[[[[[(4, 6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl) amino] carbonyl] amino] sulfonyl] methyl] benzoate} at different burial depths were determined with respect to tuber emergence, sprouting of lateral buds, carbohydrate consumption of the tuber, and growth and new tuber production of the regrown plants. Days required to regrowth from the growth cessation due to bensulfuron-methyl were shorter in shallow-buried tubers than in deep-buried tubers. With application of bensulfuron-methyl shallow-buried tubers consumed less carbohydrate in the tuber than deep-buried tubers as compared with in deep-buried tubers during the period of growth cessation and greater regrowth also occurred in the former. Fast and great regrowth in shallow-buried tubers resulted in great production of dry matter and new tubers. However, the differences obtained were not due to bensulfuron-methyl, but due mainly to ecological emergence and growth characteristics of tubers buried at different depths.

  • For the establishment of early selection of heat-tolerant clones through in vitro tuberization of true potato seeds, different temperature treatments for in vitro tuberization were investigated. The ratios of tuberization at 2$0^{\circ}C$ on var. Superior and DTO-33 treated with 5 mg/L of BAP and 500 mg/L of CCC, were 85% and 92%, respectively. At 3$0^{\circ}C$, the ratio of tuberization on DTO-33 was 37%, which revealed strongly heat-tolerant clone. In culture system of in vitro tuberization, the number of tubers per flask at 2$0^{\circ}C$ on non-subculture incubation was more than that on subculture incubation. The condition of non-subculture and short-day treatment for 4 weeks was good for production as 10.6 tubers per flask, which was very similar to that of long-day treatment. On the other hand, tuber diameter on long-day treatment was greater as 11.2 mm than on short-day treatment. Therefore, in vitro tuberization from true potato seeds could be induced under the condition of long-day treatment at darkness.

  • The freezing resistance of Eleocharis kuroguqai was evaluated in artifical and natural freezing conditions in relation to tuber size, depth of tuber burial and soil moisture conditions. Osmotic potential of immature and mature tuber of E. kuroguqai before hardening was -12.1 and -23.5 bar, respectively, but decreased to -61. 0 and -67.1 bar after 120-day hardening period. Percent survival of E. kuroguqai tubers during the winter period was 13% and 67% in dry and moist moisture conditions at burial of 5cm depth, but all tubers were survived in the three moisture conditions employed when buried at 25cm depth. Greater decrease of osmotic potential was observed in tubers buried at 5cm depth than tubers buried at 25cm depth, resulting in greater freezing resistance in the former. Large tuber was more susceptable to freezing temperatures than small tuber.

  • In order to know the effect of planting date and cutting management on Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus truberosus L.) as a new forage or energy crop, JA tubes were planted from April 7 to June 27 with 20 day interval. Growth and yield could stay high as normal planting if tuber planting had been done until late May. The delayed planting after June caused deterioration of seed tuber, produced poor emergence and retarded growth. Previous harvested field did not need additional planting every spring because there were enough leftover tubers usually small size, less than 3gr., to provide a dense seedling establishment. This plot had too dense in population to adjust its spacing by thinning some of seedlings. One or two times cutting for forage or silage production reduced tuber yield very significantly. Therefore, it was not a good management to harvest for both forage and tuber production. Topping at 20cm from growing point in early July prevented from lodging and assured tuber yield.

  • Some biological characteristics with respect to tuber formation of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi were investigated. Tuber formation was initiated at the descending time of daily maximum and minimum temperatures, accelerated under the minimum temperature lower than $20^{\circ}C$, and terminated at about $10^{\circ}C$. Tubers produced at the early season were located at deeper soil layers. Large tubers were found at deeper soil depths and required the longer period for sprouting as compared with small tubers. Percent emergence decreased as the emergence depth increased, while percent old-tuber produced during previous years was greater at the deeper depths.

  • The most troublesome perennials in the paddy fields in Korea, such as Cyperus serotinus, Potamogeton Franchetii, Sagittaria pygmaea and Eleocharis Kuroguwai, were studied about shape, aspects of ,germination, depth of development(under flooded and upland conditions), reproduction process and production amount. And these characters were compared with in these perennials.

The Metabolism of (2-$^{14}C$) Mevalonic Acid on Photoperiodic Induction in Grafted Solanum Andigena

  • The metabolism of sterol precurosor in leaves of Salanum andigena grafted between photoinduced and noninduced plant was investigated with the use of (2-$^{14}$ C) mevalonic acid. By the technique of the preparative gas-liquid chromatography, radioactive compounds of squalene, 4,4’-dimethylsterols and 4-demethylsterol were isolated and determined quantitatively. When labeled mevalonic acid n as applied to leaves radioactivity was extensively incorporated into non-saponifiable materials of lipid fraction and aqueous fraction (ethanol-water fraction). Radioactivity of 14C derived from (2-$^{14}$ C) mevalonic acid was transmissible from photoinduced plant to non-induced plant across the graft union, as tuberization hormone was, and incorporated into the sterols of the non-induced plant. Inhibitors of sterol biosynthesis, SK & F 7997 and nicotinic acid, are effective suppressors of tuber growing, if applied to leaves during photoinduction period. The experimental results suggest that certain substance containing isoprene unit, or sterol-like compound may participate in tuber growing.

  • The experiment on sprouting and emergence properties of Eleocharis kuroguwai was conducted at laboratory and greenhouse conditions in 1993. Most of tubers had the apical dominance of buds at sprouting and had the competitive relationship for mesocotyl elongation. When pyrazosulfuron was applied on soil surface, all of apical buds were killed, but the first and second lateral buds survived to 50% and 90%, respectively, and the third lateral buds were almost at presprouted state. The tubers at 10-15cm deep soil emerged 1 week late and 35% low in emergence rate compared with the tubers at 2-5cm deep. As the plants emerged from the deep soil, the mesocotyl and the roots were distributed at deep soil more or less. Among the tubers buried at 10cm and 15cm deep soil, 25% and 30% respectively were not emergerd due to the suspension of mesocotyl elongation. Although the roots and shoots were removed from the tubers at the stage of 20cm high, all of mother tubers emerged again even 2 weeks late.
