  • This present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll contents of Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Prunus leveilleana, Magnolia sieboldii, growing under four different light intensity regimes (full sun, and 64~73%, 35~42%, 9~16% of full sun). As result, Betula platyphylla var. japonica showed outstanding photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in full sun and showed low shade tolerance. Prunus leveilleana showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in 64~73% or 35~42% of full sun and showed common shade tolerance. However, Magnolia sieboldii showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in 35~42% of full sun, while the lowest in full sun. Magnolia sieboldii showed the highest shade tolerance compared to the other species. As the shading level increased, the total chlorophyll contents of all species increased with significant difference.

  • To elucidate the physiological characteristics of 2 japonica type and 2 tongil type of rice cultivars, photosynthesis, respiration and diurnal changes of photosynthesis rate had been investigated 6 times at each growing stage. The ratios of photosynthetic part of tongil types were higher than those of japonica types at tillering stage. The highest photosynthetic activity was measured on August 1, before heading in each growing stage, and efficiency of photosynthesis showed its the highest on July 25. Diurnal photosynthetic curve at heading stage reached the peak at 11-12 AM, but after 2 weeks from heading stage, the peak apperred at 1-2 PM. Conversion of respiration into photosynthesis for $CO_2$ fixation started 30~60 minutes later than the standard sunrise time and reconversion for carborhdrate accmulation began 50~60 minutes earlier than the standard sunset time. Photosynthesis showed positive correlation with chlorophyll content and root activity. Harvest index of tongil type cultivars were significantly higher than those of japonica type cultivars.

  • This study was performed to investigate photosynthetic responses of 4 foliage plants in relation to light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, and media, and to select efficient plants for the indoor environment control based on the results. Four foliage plants used in this study included Syngonium podophyllum, Schefflera arboricola cv. Hong Kong, Dieffenbachia amoena, and Dracaena deremensis cv. Warneckii Compacta. The plants cultivated in two different growth media, peatmoss and hydroball, and subjected to various light intensities (0, 30, 50, 80, 100, 200, 400, and $600\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD) and $CO_2$ levels (0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 700, 1000, and $1500\;{\mu}mol{CO_2}{\cdot}mol^{-1}$). As a result of the photosynthetic rate of foliage plants according to change of light intensity and $CO_2$ levels, Schefflera arboricola and Dieffenbachia amoena showed high apparent quantum yield, which stands for the photosynthetic rate under low light intensity, and both plants also recorded higher photosynthetic rate under high $CO_2$ concentration compared to the other two indoor plants. Dracaena deremensis showed the lowest photosynthetic rate under the low light intensity or high $CO_2$ concentration. There were inconsistent results in photosynthetic rate of foliage plants grown in peatmoss or hydroball. Higher photosynthetic rate was observed in Schefflera arboricola with peatmoss rather than hydroball as light and $CO_2$ concentration increased. However, hydroball had a positive effect on Dieffenbachia amoena in terms of photosynthetic rate. In case of Syngonium podophyllum, peatmoss induced higher photosynthetic rate according to increased light intensity, but there was no effect of media on the rate under various $CO_2$ treatements. In contrast, media did not affect to photosynthetic efficiency of Dracaena deremensis subjected to various light intensities and the rate of Dracaena deremensis with peatmoss was a little high when $CO_2$ concentration increased. In conclusion, potential plants for the indoor air pulification and environmental control were Schefflera arboricola and Dieffenbachia amoena because they showed high photosynthetic rate under typical indoor conditions, low light intensity and high $CO_2$ concentration.

  • In this research, the $CO_2$ absorption performance of mortar was investigated. The level of $CO_2$ absorption in mortar with various binders including cement and nonsintered cement was examined. As a result for the mortar with photosynthetic bacteria, the compressive strength was similar to the one without the bacteria at early age but decreased at the age of 28 days. However, for the $CO_2$ absorption, with photosynthetic, the performance of the mortar with OPC, and nonsintered cement deceased to 21%(234 ppm) and 19.7%(243 ppm) respectively after 12 hours age.

  • To investigate effects of water stress on apparent photosynthetic, transpiration rates, leaf orientation, yield and its related traits, four soybean varieties were planted on the Wagner pots in a plastic house covered with polyethylene film. As the light intensity and leaf temperature in a day increased, the movement of central leaflet in the second leaf of main stem occurred earlier than that of the lateral leaflet. The apparent photosynthetic rate of the central leaflet was higher than that of the lateral leaflet, but light intercept and leaf temperature of lateral leaflet were higher than those of the central leaflet. The apparent photosynthetic rate had highly positive correlation with the photon flux density, stomatal conductance and temperature, respectively. The photon flux density, stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthetic rates in the control were significantly higher than those in the water stress plot. The yield and its related traits in the water stress plot became decreased significantly in comparison with the control.

  • Photosynthetic ability and net assimilation rate were compared between two-year-old seedlings of Pinus rigida and of Pinus rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda $F_1$ to examine whether growth potential could be predicted at young stages. Six families per each species used in this study were grown at the nursery of the Institute of Forest Genetics in Suweon. Photosynthesis and net assimilation rate showed seasonal and genetic variations among the families. Photosynthetic ability of most of the families except for three families of Pinus rigida decreased with increasing ages, while net assimilation rate of all the families decreased with increasing ages. The rank of photosynthetic ability and net assimilation rate among the families varied during the experimental period. Thus, growth potential was better predicted from total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate rather titan from photosynthetic ability and net assimilation rate at a certain period. Total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate were correlated with total dry weight. Correlation coefficients were 0.6394 and 0.7998, respectively. Thus, growth potential of the two species could be predicted by the measurement of total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate. Family K.G. No. $13{\times}7-107$ from Pinus rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda $F_1$ and family K.G. No. 1 from Pinus rigida were the best in total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate within species.

  • Two different sensitivity classes of black cherry (Prunus serotina) under the natural growing environmental conditions were assessed adjacent to Air Monitoring Station located at Horton research center in Giles County, Virginia, USA. Ambient ozone concentrations, leaf gas exchange, and visible foliar injury were measured on-site during the growing seasons of 2000, 2001, and 2002. Ambient ozone exposures were sufficient to induce typical foliar visible injury corresponding with the reduction in photosynthetic activities only in sensitive black cherry. There were positive correlations between increasing cumulative ozone concentration and percent reduction in maximum net photosynthetic rates ($Pn_{MAX}$) under saturating light conditions and in quantum yield for carbon reduction (${\Phi}CO_2$) of sensitive black cherry compared to tolerant black cherry. There was a negative correlation between chlorophyll content and percent leaf injury in sensitive black cherry. Furthermore, $Pn_{MAX}$ was inversely related to percent leaf injury.

  • Interactions between microalgae and heterotrophic bacteria are common in natural environments. This study investigated the effect of heterotrophic bacteria on the activity of the photosynthetic eukaryotic alga Chlorella sp. MF1907 when cocultured. A total of 31 heterotrophic bacterial isolates belonging to different genera were cocultured with MF1907. Interactions of the alga with Agromyces, Rhodococcus, Sphingomonas, Hyphomicrobium, Rhizobium, and Pseudomonas were positive, while those with Burkholderia, Paraburkholderia, Micrococcus, Arthrobacter, Mycobacterium, Streptomyces, Pedobacter, Mucilaginibacter, Fictibacillus, Tumebacillus, Sphingopyxis, and Erythrobacter were negative (p < 0.05). A turnover experiment demonstrating a switch from heterotrophic to autotrophic activity of MF1907 was performed using 16 isolates exhibiting apparent effects (positive, negative, or neutral). Compared with the results of the coculture experiment, eight isolates exhibited the same outcomes, while the others did not. Consistently, Pseudomonas and Agromyces showed a remarkable positive effect on MF1907 activity, and Burkholderia, Streptomyces, and Erythrobacter had a marked negative effect. Our results suggest that it may be possible to use the isolates for controlling populations of microalgae in natural and engineered environments.
