A Double Resolution Pixel Array for the Optical Angle Sensor (2배 해상도를 가지는 픽셀 어레이 광학 각도 센서)

  • This paper presents a compact double resolution scheme for the optical angle sensor based on 1-dimensional CMOS photodiode pixel array. All the pixels are divided into the even pixel and the odd pixel groups. The winner take all circuit is provided for each group. The proposed interpolation scheme increases the resolution by 2 from the winner addresses and winner values. The interpolation scheme can be implemented without any additional pixels or winner take all circuits and require only a comparator and a XOR gate. The proposed pixel array chip that has 336 photodiode pixels with $5.6{\mu}m$ pitch was fabricated with $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process and was assembled with a $50{\mu}m$ slit to form an angle sensor. The measured resolution is $0.1{\circ}$ with the proposed interpolation. The chip consumes 35mW and provides 8k samples per second.

  • In this paper, a study is conducted on the design of an optical system of a time-of-flight (TOF) laser distance sensor that can measure long distances by minimizing beam divergence. When measuring a long distance, the amount of light on the object's surface decreases as the distance increases, due to the diffusion angle of the laser beam, and thus the beam at the sensor also decreases, causing measurement errors. In general, a cylindrical lens is used to reduce the divergence beam angle. However, an optical system using a cylindrical lens has the problem of degraded performance due to the difficulty with assembly tolerance, as well as the problem of the increased size of the optical system, and thus the use of aspherical lenses has been increasing recently. Therefore, in this study, the optical efficiencies and assembly tolerances of optical systems using respectively a cylindrical lens and an aspherical lens are compared and analyzed.

  • The temporal super resolution is a method for increasing the frame rate. Electro-optical sensors are used in various surveillance and reconnaissance weapons systems, and the spatial resolution and temporal resolution of the required electro-optical sensors vary according to the performance requirement of each weapon system. Because most image sensors capture images at 30~60 frames/second, it is necessary to increase the frame rate when the target moves and changes rapidly. This paper proposes a method to increase the frame rate using color channel extrapolation. Using a DMD, one frame of a general camera was adjusted to have different consecutive exposure times for each channel, and the captured image was converted to a single channel image with an increased frame rate. Using the optical flow method, a virtual channel image was generated for each channel, and a single channel image with an increased frame rate was converted to a color channel image. The performance of the proposed temporal super resolution method was confirmed by the simulation.

  • When voltage is applied on the metal layer of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, electric field excitation causes charge accumulation on the metal surface. This alters not only the optical properties of the metal but also the SPR angle. In this study we investigate this effectby performing experiments using solutions of various pH values, and we obtain the relation between total surface charge and SPR angle. The curves for the various pH conditions become coincident. We compare our results to those from an earlier space charge layer (SCL) model, and suggest a modified SCL model which explains our result well. This result will be useful in applications of SPR sensors, and in studying the optical properties of thin metal layers.

  • A modified catadioptric omnidirectional optical system (MCOOS) using an RGB/NIR CMOS sensor is optically designed for a capsule endoscope with the front field of view (FOV) in visible light (RGB) and side FOV in visible and near-infrared (NIR) light. The front image is captured by the front imaging lens system of the MCOOS, which consists of an additional three lenses arranged behind the secondary mirror of the catadioptric omnidirectional optical system (COOS) and the imaging lens system of the COOS. The side image is properly formed by the COOS. The Nyquist frequencies of the sensor in the RGB and NIR spectra are 90 lp/mm and 180 lp/mm, respectively. The overall length of 12 mm, F-number of 3.5, and two half-angles of front and side half FOV of 70° and 50°-120° of the MCOOS are determined by the design specifications. As a result, a spatial frequency of 154 lp/mm at a modulation transfer function (MTF) of 0.3, a depth of focus (DOF) of -0.051-+0.052 mm, and a cumulative probability of tolerance (CPT) of 99% are obtained from the COOS. Also, the spatial frequency at MTF of 170 lp/mm, DOF of -0.035-0.051 mm, and CPT of 99.9% are attained from the front-imaging lens system of the optimized MCOOS.

  • We have developed a biosensor reading system using a white light source and a color-sensor. To reduce the environmental effect, we used the ratio of specific color intensity to the entire white light intensity. Also we could improve the responsibility of the system by controlling the amplification of the color sensor output.

  • A fiber-optic interferometric sensor array capable of passive remote sensing is demonstrated with two sensors at the array head. The signal from a specific sensor could be separated in time domain. The measured sensitivity at signal frequencies of a few kHz and cross talk level between two sensors were about $40{\mu}rad\sqrt{Hz}$and below - 50 dB, respectively.tively.
