  • The objective of this work is to develop a new design method to find optimal coils, especially the optimal coil configuration of an optical pickup actuator. In designing actuator coils, the developed Lorenz force in the coils along the desired direction should be made as large as possible while forces and torques in other directions should be made as small as possible. The design methodology we are developing is a systematic approach that can generate optimal coil configurations for given permanent magnet configurations. To consider the best coil configuration among all feasible coil configurations, we formulate the design problem as a topology optimization of a coil. The present formulation for coil design is noble in the sense that the existing topology optimization is mainly concerned with the design of yokes and permanent magnets and that the optimization of actuator coils is so far limited within shape or size optimization. Though the present design methodology applies to any problem, the specific design example considered is the design of fine-pattern tracking and focusing coils.

  • This paper proposes a method to determine the initial shape and size of the suspension beam of an optical pickup actuator subjected to specified dynamic characteristics. For the analysis, a simplified model consisting of a concentrated mass, rotational springs and beams is developed. Based on this model, the key dimensionless design parameters are introduced, which govern low-frequency vibration characteristics i. e., the resonant frequencies in the tracking and focusing directions. A systematic procedure for sizing and shaping the actuator suspension beams is described and applied to a sample case. The effectiveness of the present technique is verified through the comparison of the present and the finite element results.

  • Optical disk system aiming at fast data transfer rate and high-density recording requires the improvement in performance of the pickup head. Especially, the pickup actuator needs better linearity and stability. So, a lever actuator for optical disk is proposed. In this paper, the role of lever and its structure are discussed and the flexure hinge is introduced to enhance the precise movement. Using the Newoton's method, the motion of equation for the lever actuator is obtained. The results are compared with the analysis results by the FEM (Finite Element Method) for the vibration and the magnetic field. Consequently, the lever actuator has the 2"d system characteristics in 3-axis moving directions and superior stability for the external vibration.tion.

  • In optical disk drives, one of commonly used pickup actuator is a Sliding and rotary type of pickup actuator which is cheaper than other pickup actuators and has simple assembly. However, it reported that non-linearity due to friction between a shaft and a sleeve had to be considerably analyzed in design and servo system in employing this type of pickup actuator. In this paper, this friction is modeled as a Coulomb's friction and the effect of friction is examined in the simulation. A digital servo system is applied to pickup actuator with friction in order to have good focusing servo. To enhance focusing servo performance using digital servo merit, frist PD-controller is applied to have fast response performance, second lead-lag compensator is applied to have stable focusing performance.

  • In this paper, a new modeling of a fine actuator for an optical pick-up has been proposed and multiobjective optimization of the actuator has been performed. The fine actuator is constituted of the bobbin which is supported by wire suspension, the coils which wind around the bobbin, and the magnets which cause the magnetic flux. If current flows in the coils, magnetic force is so produced as to be balanced with spring force of wire, so the bobbin is pisitioned. In this model the transfer function from input voltage to output displacementof bobbin has been obtained so that we can describe this integrated system with electromagnetic and mechanical parts. Wire suspension is regarded as a continuous Euler beam, damper as distributed viscous damping, and bobbin as a rigid body which can move up- and down- ward motion only. According to the model, the high frequency dynamic characteristics of the fine actuator can be known and the effect of damping can be investigated while the conventional second order model cannot. In multiobjective optimization, two objective functions have been chosen to maximize the fundamental frequency and the sensitivity with respect to the input voltage of the actuator so that Pareto's optimal solutions have been obtained using .epsilon.-constraint method. These objective functions will satisfy the trends which will enhance the access speed and reduce the tracking error in the optical pick-up technology of next generation. In the result of optimization, we obtain the designs of the optical pick-up fine actuator which has high speed, high sensitivity and low resonant peak. Furthermore, we offer the relation between two object functions so that the designer can make easy choice.

The general servo method of conventional ODD system was based and modified for new holographic memory. The pre-grooved disc pattern and special dichroic coating were also included for new design in this research and the final separated optics are expected to be applied to the future general holographic memory as well as the one dimensional SLM holographic memory.

  • In this work, the method of acquiring the pupil function of optical system is proposed. The wavefront aberration and the intensity distribution of pupil can be analysed with the pupil function. This system can be adopted to the manufacturing line of optical pickup directly and also has good performance to analysing various property of optical instrument. It is one kind of inverse problem to get pupil functions by 3D beam data. The extended Nijboer-Zernike(ENZ) approach recently proposed by Netherlands research group is adopted to accompany to solve these inverse problem. The ENZ approach is one of a aberration retrieval method for which numerous approaches are available. But this approach is new in the sense that it use the highly efficient representation of pupil functions by means of their Zernike coefficients. These coefficients are estimated by using matching procedure in the focal region the theoretical 3D intensity distribution and measured 3D intensity distribution. The algorithm that can be applied more general circumstance such as high-numerical aperture instrument is developed by modifying original ENZ approach. By these scheme, MS windows based GUI program is developed and the good performance is verified with generated 3D beam data.

  • A new suspension model of an optical pick-up actuator is developed. This model is very stable and easily manufactured owing to its specially designed geometry. In designing the suspension, the first two natural frequencies are kept lying in a certain range and sub-resonance frequencies are made as high as possible. The vibration and sensitivity analysis needed for optimal design is based on a simplified beam model of the bobbin-suspension structure. The investigation of the strain energy distribution in each vibration mode appears to be very useful.
