  • Graphene and polyaniline with thermoelectric properties are one of the potential substitutes for inorganic materials for flexible thermoelectric applications. In this study, we studied the photo-induced thermoelectric effect of graphene-polyaniline composites. The graphene-polyaniline composites were synthesized by introducing an amine functional group to graphene oxide for covalently connecting graphene and polyaniline, reducing the graphene oxide, and then polymerizing the graphene oxide with aniline. Graphene-polyaniline composites were prepared by changing the aniline contents in order to expect an optimal photothermoelectric effect, and their structural properties were confirmed through FT-IR and Raman analysis. The photocurrent and photovoltage characteristics were analyzed by irradiating light asymmetrically without an external bias and the current and voltage with various aniline contents. While the photocurrent trends to the electrical conductivity of the graphene-polyaniline composites, the photovoltage was related to the temperature change of the graphene-polyaniline composite, which was converted into thermal energy by light.

  • Remediation technology becomes an issue in environmental engineering. The vibro-recovery technique is one of popular means to remove pollutants from contaminated soils and groundwater. Using Ultrasonic excitation in soil-fluid medium, it was found that removal efficiency in a mechanical effects was significant. In this paper, therefore, laboratory experiments were conducted on clayey sand soil columns using a probe-type ultrasonic processor. Ultrasonic treatment with simultaneous pumping enhances dislodgement of clay particles, and ultrasonic excitation reduced the proportions of finer particles and thus result in increased hydraulic conductivity significantly. Also, the results provided the changes in grain size distribution curve of the soil due to ultrasonic excitation. The results indicated that the maximum size of particles mobilized by Ultrasonic is about 0.004mm and particles in the size range from 0.04mm to 1.0mm were subjected to fracturing. The economic feasibility of Ultrasonic implementation is considered in power requirement of the generator and maintenance of the horn. At a specified amplitude of vibrations, the power requirement of the generator depends on overburden pressure of the horn, temperature and viscosity of fluid in the soil medium. For comparisons, the requirement of a one inch and two inch diameter horn sonicators are compared with the power required for pumping water from different depths.

  • This study was investigated the occurrence of sclerotinia rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum at the major perilla cultivating area, Gangdong-dong, Gangseo-gu, Busan in 1998. The incidence of this disease ranged from 8.1 to 28.3% at Gangdong-dong area during the growing seasons. Symptoms of the disease initially appeared damping-off of infected stems and soft-rot on the leaves of perilla. Under the relatively high humidity, abundant white mycelia of the pathogen formed on the lesion developed into black sclerotia later and the infected leaves were finally fell down. Sixteen isolates, Sl-S16, isolated from diseased lesions showing typical symptoms, and pathogenicity was tested using mycerlial disks. Among them, S2 isolate showing the most strong pathogenicity was selected and identified as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics. For biological control, an antagonistic bacteria, N4 isolate which effectively inhibited not only mycelial growth of S2 isolate but also suppress sclerotinia rot on the pot assay, was selected and identified as Bacillus megaterium according to Bergey's manual and API system., Wettable powder type, N4 formulation using B. megaterium N4 isolate was developed and estimated its control effect on perilla crops in a plastic house. As a results, N4 formulation which applied before 3 days inoculation of pathogen was effectually controlled Sclerotinia rot as the control value of 98.0%, was more effective than chemical fungicide, benomyl showing the control value of 78.0%. This is the first report of wettable powder formulation as a biocontrol agent using B. megaterium N4 against Sclerotinia rot caused by S. sclerotiorum on perilla.

  • Background: The autophagy is the major route for lysosomal degradation of misfolded protein aggregates and oxidative cell components. We hypothesized that rapamycin (autophagy enhancer) would prolong the survival of motor neuron and suppress the disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods: A total of 24 transgenic mice harboring the human G93A mutated SOD1 gene were used. The clinical status involving rotarod test and survival, and biochemical study of ALS mice model were evaluated. Results: The onset of symptoms was significantly delayed in the rapamycin administration group compared with the control group. However, after the clinical symptom developed, the rapamycin exacerbated the disease progression and shortened the survival of ALS mice model, and apoptosis signals were up-regulated compared with control group. Conclusions: Even though further detailed studies on the relevancy between autophagy and ALS will be needed, our results revealed that the rapamycin administration was not effective for being novel promising therapeutic strategy in ALS transgenic mice and exacerbated the apoptosis.

  • The mixture of fluxapyroxad plus pyraclostrobin or the 9 time-spray schedule with various fungicides was evaluated for their efficacy in controlling pear scab in field trials. It showed sufficient condition to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides for the control of pear scab since disease incidence of the untreated control plot was 58.4% or 100% on leaves or fruits, respectively. Pear scab on leaves was occurred by 6.3% at treated plot with the mixture of fluxapyroxad plus pyraclostrobin, resulting in the 89.2% of control value. Incidence of the fruit disease was 16.7% at treated plot with the mixture of fluxapyroxad plus pyraclostrobin, showing 83.3% of control value. When the 9 time-spray schedule was tested, pear scab was occurred by 5% or 13.3% on leaves or fruits, respectively. Their control values were the 91.4% on leaves or 86.7% on fruits. Although the 9 time-spray schedule showed slightly lower disease incidence than the mixture of fluxapyroxad plus pyraclostrobin, but there is no statistically significant difference. These results suggest that the mixture of fluxapyroxad plus pyraclostrobin can control effectively the pear scab.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate photothermal effect of laser, which eliminates and reduces bacteria causing periodontal disease, on treatment of periodontal disease. This study included subjects with moderate periodontitis who visited the Department of Oral Medicine, College of dentistry, Yonsei University. The subjects were divided into experimental group, where Argon laser treatment was used, and control group, where conventional subgingival curettage was used. Gingival fluids from each subject were collected prior and after 1 week of the treatment, and changes in number of bacterial colonies cultured from aerobic as well as anaerobic bacteria responsible for the periodontal disease, and changes in clinical indices related to the periodontal disease, such as plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, were analysed. As a result, the number of bacterial colonies of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria reduced after 1 week of the treatment in both groups, especially the bacterial colonies of anaerobic bacteria which showed statistically significant reduction(p<0.1). However, there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. Clinical indices including plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index were reduced after 1 week of the treatment in both groups. In the experimental group, gingival index(p<0.1) and sulcus bleeding index(p<0.01) showed significant reduction, and, in the control group, sulcus bleeding index(p<0.01) showed significant reduction. However, there were no significant differences in each indices between the two groups. The above results suggest that Argon laser could be used as a substitute of conventional subgingival curettage, or in combination with subgingival curettage which would increase the effect of the treatment. Although the possibility of clinical application of Argon laser was observed in this study, more randomized-controlled research, including acquirement of sufficient samples as well as long-termed follow up, would be necessary before clinically effective application of Argon laser.

  • Purpose: Our goals were to evaluate the effect of high dose radioiodine treatment for thyroid cancer by taking in laxatives. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients(M:F=13:7, age $46.3{\pm}8.1\;yrs$) who underwent high dose radioiodine treatment were seperated into Group 1 taking $^{131}I$ 5,500 MBq and Group 2 with the use of laxatives after taking $^{131}I$ 5,500 MBq. The whole body was scanned 16 hours and 40 hours after taking radioactive iodines by using gamma camera, the ROIs were drawn on the gastro-intestinal tract and thigh for calculation of reduction ratio. At particular time during hospitalization, the radioactivity remaining in the body was measured in 1 meter from patient by using survey meter (RadEye-G10, Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA). Schematic presentation of an Origin 8.5.1 software was used for spatial dose rate. Statistical comparison between groups were done using independent samples t-test. P value less than 0.05 was regarded as statistically significant. Results: The reduction ratio in gastro-intestinal 16 hours and 40 hours after taking laxatives is $42.1{\pm}6.3%$ in Group 1 and $72.1{\pm}6.4%$ in Group 2. The spatial dose rate measured when discharging from hospital was $23.8{\pm}6.7{\mu}Sv/h$ in Group 1 and $8.2{\pm}2.4{\mu}Sv/h$ in Group 2. The radioactivity remaining in the body is much decreased at the patient with laxatives(P<0.05). Conclusion: The use in combination with laxatives is helpful for decreasing radioactivity remaining in the body. The radioactive contamination could be decreased at marginal individuals from patients.
