  • Birefringence due to structural irregularities in photonic crystal fiber is numerically analyzed. The statistical correlations between the birefringence and the degree of the irregularities are presented, and their behaviors are explained using a perturbation theory.

  • Operational and thermal characteristics of a thin disk Yb:YAG crystal with a thickness of 0.8 mm were studied using as a pumping source a fiber-coupled 930 nm laser diode. The heat generated in the crystal was dissipated by placing both surfaces in contact with copper plates with central hole, and the dependence of the temperature change in the illuminated spot on hole size was investigated by measuring the spectral change of the lasing peaks. The slope efficiency and optical-to-optical efficiency with respect to the LD pump power were as high as 42.2% and 34.8%, respectively. The temperature at the illuminated spot increased with diode current and with increasing hole size of the copper plate. When the hole size considerably exceeded the crystal thickness, the temperature rise deviated from the linear increase at high pump power.

  • The image quality of imageguide depends on the structure, material, length of microfibers and the phenomena such as cross-talk and leaky ray between adjacent fibers. These Parameters should be considered as important factors in the image transmission qualify of fibers. However it is considered to be very difficult to assess all the parameters in a consistent way Therefore. two image characteristics, image resolution and image brightness are measured and analyzed to determine the image quality of imageguide. But the exact methods to measure two image characteristics of imageguide are not reported. In this study, the image brightness of imageguide for ultrathin endoscope is determined by measuring of the numerical aperture. the packing fraction and the attenuated power ratio of imageguide. Especially it is possible to obtain more exact results from measuring the numerical aperture of whole image guide than those from theoretical calculation of the single microfiber in an image guide. The image brightness of the image guide which has $3.1\mu m$ microfibers is about 37% less than that with $4.1\mu m$ microfibers.

  • We have experimentally studied supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber as a function of pump wavelength and intensity with 100 fs pulsewidth. A supercontinuum over 750 nm spectral width with amplitude variation less than 10 dB has been achieved. It was generated by coupling femtosecond pulses from a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser into a 2 m long photonic crystal fiber. Adjusting the parameters of the pump source, it was also possible to control different spectral features of the supercontinuum radiation.
