  • Physiological disorders in pear fruit are mainly caused by problems during the growing season, such as lack of calcium in the soil, poor drainage, low porosity, vigorous pruning, and excessive fruiting. In this study, soil physicochemical properties and leaf characteristics were analyzed in pear orchards in four regions of Korea where chlorosis symptoms occurred to determine the causes of chlorosis. The color of chlorotic leaves was diagnosed using the naked eye or SPAD and Hunter values. The soil of the chlorotic orchard had a significantly higher soil pH than that of the regular orchard. Although adequate soil depth was not significantly associated with chlorosis, combined with over-fertilization of the soil with lime, it could potentially impair plant iron uptake. Chlorotic leaves had significantly lower iron and calcium contents and significantly higher magnesium contents than those of regular leaves. Therefore, the intensive occurrence of chlorosis during secondary shoot development around June and July when it is hot and humid may be due to impaired iron and calcium absorption, leading to physiological disorders. To solve this problem, avoiding the over-application of lime and applying foliar fertilizers containing chelated iron is recommended.

  • This study was conducted to reduce the using amount of chemical fungicides for the control of red-pepper Phytophthora blight. Effect of combination application of two microbial fungicides and two chemical fungicides for the control of red-pepper Phytophthora blight was examined in vitro, in greenhouse and under field conditions. Each microbial fungicides and chemical fungicides was two-fold diluted and mixed-soil drenched. In the greenhouse pot assay, the mixed application of B. pumilus QST2808 and a mixture of dimethomorph + ethaboxam (De) among four mixed applications of two microbial fungicides (B. pumilus QST2808, P. polymyxa AC-1) and two chemical fungicides showed the highest control effect against Phytophthora blight. Also, control effect of mixed application of B. pumilus QST2808 and De was similar to that of single application of De (dimethomorph + ethaboxam) or Mo (mancozeb + oxadixyl). In the field test, when the microbial fungicides (B. pumilus QST2808, P. polymyxa AC-1) and the chemical fungicide(De) for the control of Phytophthora blight of red pepper were mixed-soil drenched four times at 7~10 day-intervals, the control values were in the range of 78.8% to 82.0%. On the other hand when each of the two chemical fungicides (De, Mo) were soil drenched four times at 7~10 day-intervals, the control value were 65.7% to 85.8%. Consequently, the mixed application of the microbial fungicides and chemical fungicides could be recommended as a control method for reducing the using amount of chemical fungicides.

  • The study aims to identify the pathogenicity of Phytophthora. capsici isolates in major pepper-producing areas in Korea and the inherit genetic pattern of phytophthora blight resistance by inocula. With five kinds of testing materials including 'Kataguma (Sakata Korea)' peppers, a disease-susceptible material, '#308', a phytophthora blight resistance material, 'CM334', and their $F_1$ and $F_2$, respective isolates of P. capsici obtained from Icheon, Eumseong, Buan, Imsil and Yeongyang regions together with six kinds of peppers' inoculum including PA-159 (KACC No.40482) received from Korean Agricultural Culture Collection were used for inoculation. The disease-susceptible material '#308', the resistant material 'CM334' and the non-segregating generation of $F_1$ represented 4.94-5.00, 1.00-1.07, and 1.01-1.08 phytophthora blight incidence respectively in the group comparison by isolate. This result means that the phytophthora blight resistance was clearly distinguished among testing materials in the group comparison by P. capsici isolate. Moreover, $F_2$ segregating generation showed 1.79-2.31 phytophthora blight incidence which turned out to be identical in the group comparison by the six isolates of P. capsici isolate and with similarity between both the resistant and susceptible materials. Thus, the result proved that using the six isolates of P. capsici tested as inocula was suitable to investigate the phytophthora blight resistance. When it comes to group comparison of $F_2$ segregation generation, however, isolates were divided with PA-159 isolate being the center: a group consisting of isolates from Icheon, Buan, and Imsil and a group consisting of Yeongyang and Eumseong isolates with higher pathogenicity. The expected segregation ratio of the phytophthora blight resistance in $F_2$ generation by isolate was analyzed. PA-159 isolate showed 3:1 or 9:3:3:1, indicating that one to two genes were involved. On the other hand, results also proved that there is an interaction of genes since both Eumseong and Yeongyang isolates showed a segregation ratio of 11:5 while the Icheon isolate represented 12:3:1.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the proper supplied conditions of sodium selenate supplied by fertigation to improve functionality of major western vegetables; beet, broccoli, cabbage lettuce, celery, and parsley in highland. In this work, the growth and content of minerals, ascorbic acid, nitrate, and selenium were measured in western vegetables that treated sodium selenate by different concentration, treatment time and treatment frequency. While there was not different in early growth of some western vegetables among different concentration of sodium selenate; 1,2, 5 and $20\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, at 20 days after treatment, the fresh weight was reduced 33% at cabbage lettuce,47% at broccoli, and 74% at parsley compared control in $5\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment. But the fresh weight of beet and celery reduced just 20% and 15% compared control in even $20\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The ascorbic acid of cabbage lettuce, celery, and beet increased as sodium selenate concentration increased, so that of cabbage lettuce showed 1.2 times compared control in $20\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ treatment and also that of beet and celery increased 10%. But the ascorbic acid of broccoli and parsley was not influenced by treated sodium selenate. As the concentration of sodium selenate increased, the nitrate contents decreased regardless of crops compared control. This reduced effect of nitrate was highest in cabbage lettuce, followed by beet and celery. The mineral contents, such as K, Ca, and Mg, decreased in all crops, as the concentration of sodium selenate increased. The potassium content showed an obvious negative correlationship with the concentrations of sodium selenate regardless of crops, but the magnesium and calcium content did not show significant difference between treatments. The selenium content increased in proportion as increasing sodium selenate concentrations. The broccoli, celery and parsley treated $20\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sodium selenate showed 24.4 times, 76.4 times, and 560 times higher than control, respectively. When the sodium selenate supplied to some western vegetables in different growth stage, the selenium content increased 1.3 times and 1.4 times higher in early stage than in late stage in cabbage lettuce and broccoli, respectively. However in parsley and celery, the selenium content showed the highest in middle stage. The selenium content increased in proportion as increasing the sodium selenate treatment frequency, but in above 10 times treatment, the increased effect alleviated in parsley, celery, and cabbage lettuce. On the contrary, the selenium content of broccoli increased constantly as treatment frequency increased.

  • The Ca deficiency is a serious problem in the propagation of domestically bred 'Seolhyang' strawberry through soil cultivation. The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of the Ca containing fertilizers on the decrease of Ca deficiency symptoms and in the growth of mother and daughter plants. To achieve this, chemicals of 1.125 mM $Ca(OH)_2$, 0.375 mM $MgCl_2$, and 1.25 mM KCl were blended to contain the K:Ca:Mg (4:2:1) and the influence was compared to a commercial fertilizer, Azuro-Calma ($NO_3$-N 13%, $K_2O$ 1%, CaO 16%, MgO 6%), when those were applied as solutions with the electrical conductivity (EC) controlled to 0.6 or 1.0dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$. During 120 days after transplant, the Azuro-Calma was more effective than the combined fertilizer in the reduction of mother and daughter plants on which Ca deficiency was appeared. The application of two Ca containing fertilizers resulted in the heavier fresh and dry weights of mother plants. The treatments of 1.0dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$ of two fertilizers were more effective than those of 0.6dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$. The combined fertilizer was also more effective than Azuro-calma on the growth of above ground plant tissue. The results in length, fresh and dry weight of runners occurred from a mother plants showed that the treatment of 1.0dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$ of combined fertilizer was most effective followed by those of 1.0dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$ of Azuro-Calma, 0.6dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$ of combined fertilizer, 0.6dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$ of Azuro-Calma, and control. The fresh weights of daughter plants were heavier in the treatments of Ca application than those in the control treatment, but the differences between 0.6dS ${\cdot}m^{-1}$ and control were not significant. The above results indicate that Azuro-Calma is more effective in decreasing plants showing the Ca deficiency symptoms. However, the combined fertilizer of K:Ca:Mg is more desirable when we are concerned about the decrease of crops showing Ca deficiency as well as increase of the growth in above ground plant tissue.

  • BACKGROUND: Persimmon growers have often tried various regimens of K fertilization to improve fruit quality. This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of K rates on concentration of inorganic elements in different tree organs and on fruit characteristics. METHODS AND RESULTS: Six-year-old non-astringent 'Fuyu' persimmons, grown in 50-L pots, were used. Total K amounts of 0 (no-application), 12, 25, 37, and 66 g were fertigated to a pot with KCl solution at 3-to 4-day intervals from July to September. The 0 K trees received no K fertilizer for the two previous years. Leaves, fruits, and shoots were sampled in November. K concentrations in leaves and shoots increased significantly by increasing K rate; leaf K, 0.49% for the 0 K, increased to 3.09% for the 37 g and 3.11% for the 66 g trees. Fruit K was notably lower for the 0 K, but there were no significant differences among the trees as long as they were supplied with more than 12-g K. In the trees with 0 K, leaf necrosis in the margin was apparent in June and the symptom progressed toward the midrib. Some leaves scorch-rolled from the margin in August. The greatest effect of K rates was on fruit size; it significantly increased to 181 g for the 12 g, 203 g for the 37 g, and 206 g for the 66 g compared with 150 g for the 0 K trees. However, K rates did not affect firmness and soluble solids of the fruits. The fruits of the 0 K trees were characterized by better coloration. CONCLUSION(S): The K-rate effect on inorganic elements depended on tree organs and fruit size was the major parameter to be affected by the K rates.

  • It was the investigated the response to metalaxyl of Phytophthora capsici isolates collected in 2005 and 2006. With effective concentrations ($EC_{50}$) of metalaxyl causing 50% growth inhibition, resistance baseline was determined as more than $1.0\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. Based on the resistance baseline, isolation frequency (%) of P. capsici resistant to metalaxyl was 29.0% and 218% in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Among the isolates of P. capsici obtained in 2006, the isolation was variable; 33.3% in Chungnam, 26.3% in Chungbuk and 11.1% in Gyeongbuk. Two isolates of metalaxyl-sensitive (MS) and too isolates of metalaxyl-resistant (MR) P. capsici were selected and then used to investigate the activity of metalaxyl to their development stages. Even though there was a difference in mycelial growth inhibition by metalaxyl between MS and MR isolates, the fungicide was not active or nearly to sporangium germination, zoospore release, and zoospore germination of both MS and MR isolates. However, the fungicide showed weak activity against sporangium germination and zoospore release of P. capsici, not related with its resistance. Also, it was not inhibitory to zoospore germination of both resistant and sensitive isolates. In a greenhouse test, it showed 100% of control value against P. capsici 06-86 sensitive to metalaxyl, when it was applied by soil-drenching at $25\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. However, 06-130 and 16-155 resistant to metalaxyl showed less than 20% of control value.

  • In recent years, Allium victorialis has been extensively used as a pharmacological agent for various diseases in the form of anti-arteriosclerotic, anti-diabetic and anti-cancer. Allium victorialis is severely affected by various fungal diseases since it naturally grow in the shady and humid environments in Korea. In this case, different types of fungicides are applied to control the fungal diseases in Allium victorialis. The present study was aimed to determine the residual characteristics of two fungicides namely tebuconazole and fludioxonil on Allium victorialis. For this study, the fungicides were drenched soil on Allium victorialis in the cultivation area Pyeongchang by the standard (two thousand fold) and double (thousand fold) dilutions. At the end of $15^{th}$, $30^{th}$ and $40^{th}$ days samples were collected for residue analysis. Residues of tebuconazole and fludioxonil were analyzed using GC/NPD (Gas Chromatography/Nitrogen Phosphorus Detector) and their recovery were found to be 108.8~119.5% and 91.3~104.8%, respectively. The method of limits of quantification for both fungicides was $0.01mg\;kg^{-1}$. Further, the results of this study shows that the residue levels of both fungicides on Allium victorialis were <$0.01{\sim}0.12mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $0.01{\sim}0.09mg\;kg^{-1}$ and their % ADI (% Acceptable Daily Intake) were 17.44% and 25.75%, respectively. Based on the results obtained in this study, we suggest that the residue levels of both of the fungicides on Allium victorialis are safe and these fungicides can also be used to control fungal diseases in Allium victorialis.

  • TThis study investigated the influence of AGH-Ringer (chelated organic minerals liquid fertilizer) on the growth, yield, and fruit quality of 'Jukhyang' strawberry in a hydroponic system. The results revealed that AGH-Ringer group led to significantly higher plant length than that of the control group, and that leaf length and leaf width increased with increasing leaf area. In addition, the fresh and dry weights of leaves and SPAD unit, which measures leaf color also showed a significant increase with AGH-Ringer. However, the length and dry weight of roots did not show significant differences when compared to the control group. In the fruit quality analysis, AGH-Ringer group did not show any difference in fruit length compared to the control group, but it increased both the fruit weight, which, along with the simultaneous increase in fruit width, increased the yield per strawberry. Furthermore, AGH-Ringer group strengthened the red skin color of the fruit, and resulted in significantly greater hardness than that of the control group, but did not have any effect on the soluble solid content and acidity. As shown in the results, the AGH-Ringer group resulted in lesser mineral content and lower to medium EC (electrical conductivity) in comparison to the inorganic mineral hydroponic fertilizer, which was used as a control. However, it increased the leaf growth, fruit weight, and yield, and improved the fruit quality by increasing the soluble solid content in the hydroponic system of 'Jukhyang' strawberry. Therefore, based on this study, AGH-Ringer is thought to be a more effective hydroponic fertilizer than the inorganic mineral hydroponic fertilizer. Moreover, the field experiment demonstrated that AGH-Ringer is a useful hydroponic fertilizer convenient for application in farms. This study also proved that AGH-Ringer is a fertilizer that can promote plant nutrition by controlling the salinity of the soil and facilitating the absorption of necessary minerals in future soil cultivation, thereby providing basic data for organic farming.
