  • Morison formula has been used in the determination of wave forces acting on vertical cylindrical piles of ocean structures. The formula, however, can be applied to mildly varying varying incident waves with symmetrical shapes. The breaking waves impinge on structures with very high impact forces, which completely differ from the inertia and drag forces of the Morison formula in both magnitudes and characteristics. In the present study, a boundary element method is applied to determine the water particle velocity and acceleration under the breaking waves. A numerical model is then developed to determine breaking wave forces utilizing those water particle kinematics. The results of the model is then developed to determine breaking wave forces utilizing those water particle kinematics. The results of the model agree well with existing experimental data, giving maximal wave forces 3 times and maximal moments 5 times larger than the Morison formula does.

  • Mononobe-Okabe method is generally used to evaluate dynamic earth pressure for the seismic design of retaining walls. However, Mononobe-Okabe method does not consider the effects of dynamic interactions between backfill soil and walls. In this research, shaking table tests on retaining walls were performed to analyze the phase and magnitude of dynamic earth pressure. The unit weight of walls, the amplitude of input acceleration and the base friction coefficient of walls were varied to analyze the influence of these factors on the dynamic earth pressure. Test results showed that the dynamic earth pressure was 180 degrees out of phase with the wall inertia force for the low sliding velocity of the wall, whereas small peaks of the dynamic earth pressure, which are in phase with the wall inertia force, were developed for the high sliding velocity of the wall. The amplitude of dynamic earth pressure was proportional to that of wall acceleration and the unit weight of the wall. In addition, the dynamic earth forces calculated by the Mononobe-Okabe method were the upper limit of the dynamic earth pressures.

  • Paraffin wax is attracting many attentions for promising solid fuel of hybrid rocket because of its higher regression than other fuels. However, even with paraffin fuel combustion, unsteady low-frequency oscillation of combustion pressure is still observed. And, this is related to the formation of liquid layer and the entrainment of fuel droplets entering the axial combustion gas flow. This study investigates the effect of additional combustion of fuel droplets on the occurrence of low-frequency combustion instability. On the other hand, the formation of fuel droplets depends on Weber Number (the ratio of the inertial force to the surface tension of the liquid) and Reynolds Number of the oxidizer flow. Therefore, a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket was used to monitor the occurrence of combustion instability while changing We number. A series of combustion tests were conducted to control We number by changing the oxidizer flow rate or adding LDPE (low density polyethylene) to base fuel. In the results, it was confirmed that there is a critical We number above which the low-frequency combustion instability occurs.

  • The main purpose of the present paper is to present both the fundamental frequency and some higher free vibration frequencies for circular arches with variable section, in which rotatory inertia is included. The differential equations are derived for the in-plan free vibration of elastic circular arches with variable section. These equations were solved numerically for the linear variable circular cross-section with clamped-clamped end constraint. As the numerical results, the four lowest nondimensional natural frequencies presented as functions of the nondimensional system parameters : the end moment of inertia to crown moment of inertia ratio, the slenderness ratio, and the opening angle. The effect of rotatory inertia on the nondimensional natural frequency is also reported.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present both fundamental and some higher natural frequencies of catenary arcs. The differential equations governing planar free vibrations for these arcs are derived, in which the rotatory inertia is included, as non-dimensional forms and solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. The hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The lowest four natural frequencies are reported as the functions of non -dimensional system parameters; the slenderness ratio and the rise to span length ratio. The effects of rotatory inertia on natural frequencies are reported and some typical mode shapes are also presented.

  • Although the Inertial Measurement Unit is applied to a variety of applications such as ships, submarines, and aircrafts, it is mainly used in the attitude measurement area. But since such equipment is expensive, it has been used only in special fields. In this study, the ship's seaworthiness is verified by measuring the speed, direction, gravity, and acceleration of the ship in real time using a low-cost Inertial Measurement Unit. A research method for estimating fIuid force coefficients was devised. Therefore, this study measured ship motion factors at sea, processed and analyzed the measured data, and evaluated the overall safety of the ship and estimated the resistance and steering performance of the ship.

  • In an effort to develop and implement an inertial balance with high performance, the response characteristics of a load cell, which are some of the critical parameters for optimal system design, were evaluated using a sample object of approximately 100 g under microgravity conditions. To this end, a 15-m drop-tower was used to produce microgravity conditions, and the response characteristics of the load cell were investigated in terms of the variations in the magnitude of the deceleration of the sample object, noting that the mass of a living animal should be determined in microgravity. An analysis of the ratio of the inertial forces clearly demonstrated that the average velocity of a load cell plate should be higher than 0.5 m/s to meet the design requirements.

  • This study presents the nonlinear dynamic analysis method of the bridge with the seismic isolation bearing. Also the numerical analyses are performed for investigating the response characteristics of the bridge isolated with the lead-rubber bearing under the ground motions compatible to Korea bridge design response spectra. It is found that the pier design force can be considerably smaller than the one for the bridge with the fixed bearing. It is observed that the lead-rubber bearing has the great effectiveness for reducing the longitudinal seismic force in case of the bridges with low and medium periods. Therefore the seismic isolation bearing can be used instead of the fixed bearing for the economic and safe design of the bridge.
